Description
Ambient piece with a piano and some synths. Runtime of 2:23. Made in Logic Pro.

This is my submission piece! The shape in the back of the illustration looks vaguely humanoid, which led me to imagine it as a being from another world. I interpret the theme of 'The Far Reaches' as a cliff overlooking an expanse where our world 'ends' and another 'begins'. You can look across the rift and see them. They will look across the rift to see you, too.

The music is written to represent this 'Far Reach'. A more in-depth explanation on the writing can be found on the itch project page. I hope you enjoy the track!

Really cool stuff! Very nice to listen to. Subtle and sparse but with enough texture and movement to hold interest, and the mood shift when the rumble hits is strong yet smooth and organic.

Really good submission, great use of dynamics, and such a unique vibe. I would love to hear more of this inside a video game.

Absolutely love the light piano work. The rumbling made me feel I was experiencing a massive creature trudge around in the other world (I thought this even before I read your brief about seeing a being so you definitely portrayed this well). Massive and terrifying, but careful and calm. With the piano as contrast to show its true nature.

The mix is great, and the piece really made me conjure the story in my head which is awesome.

Great work!

I'm not too familiar with the hyper light drifter soundtrack, but I'm a big fan of the impressionist/minimalist style you used in this!

The little electronic stuff in the background was cool too, the blend of that with the piano reminded me a bit of Sakamoto Ryuichi's ambient works.

Stellar work!

I like the softness, dynamics, and mix right off the bat with this one. Really pleasant. It also brings in some really interesting textures, I like the slightly dirty synth and the pitch bending.

Heh! That bass made me think there was a big explosion outside! Definitely an unusual, interesting element.

Really nicely done!

I like the subtle-ness and chill vibes of the track. It's almost like it's leading up to something big!

You could really feel the vast depth of the expanse where that other world begins in that deep rumbling sound you added. Super cool!

thank you! the sub-bass boom in the latter half is actually a recorded upright piano (specifically a chord, not me smashing the piano). although not my original intention when recording, i thought the sound had a really interesting texture and decided to run it through a sub-bass plugin for a unique 'boom' :D

this kind of sound is used all over the soundtrack of Hyper Light Drifter (composed for by Disasterpeace, of whose work i have drawn great inspiration from) and i think it's really effective at creating the perception of a massive space!

Great submission, a slow start and from 1 min onward I felt it coming together beautifully and the mix is one of the best I've heard in this jam!
Take care!

thank you so much! a recurring philosophy i noticed in the music of Disasterpeace is how he never plays all his cards at once - instead only foreshadowing or building one musical idea at a time before eventually pulling the cloth and aweing you with a complete assembly. i loved the sense of scale that could create, and i wanted to try something similar by only 'completing' the progression in the latter half of the piece. i'm glad it's working!

This is so beautiful.  I've listened to it several times over the past 2 or so weeks and I love it more every time.  There's not a traditional melody, but there is definite thematic structure beneath the composition that gives it a huge unique character.  A structure I can't really articulate but I can feel it.

Before I read your description, it was already giving me HLD vibes.  And that is a huge compliment.  Maybe it could be a bit louder?  But maybe not, since the dynamic range is really nice.  Anyways, this composition gives me the chills.  Really love this.

thank you so much for the kind words (and for listening to it so much)! it makes me really happy someone appreciates the loose structuring - i personally love HLD's musical style but i understand this kind of abstract presentation might not be for everyone.

this prompt has been a fantastic opportunity for me to study Disasterpeace's compositional philosophy (and attempt to apply it myself). i'm honored you think the vibes are there -w-

Really solid work, especially in the really strong low sections. So smooth and subtle, mixed perfectly.

Developer

thank you! i'm glad my work on the synths and mix paid off. one of my primary objectives was to make the piece as pleasant to listen to as possible (because ambient music would easily fall short without a decent mix that sets up a good space) and i hope i've successfully achieved that -w-
