Description
This is my submission for the Impressions Composing Jam: Imagination #2 Theme: The Far Reaches.

PROJECT TITLE: In Reverence of Nature: Pilgrimage to Amida Falls

These three short tracks were written to tell the story of a disillusioned villager who joins two passing pilgrims on a consecrated expedition along Kiso Road to their destination at The Amida Falls.

The tracks were composed exclusively using the Final Fantasy VII soundfont along with various effects. Inspiration was taken from Yasunori Mitsuda (Chrono Trigger, Chrono Cross), Christopher Larkin (Hollow Knight) as well as modern electronic composers like Autechre and Boards of Canada.

TRACK DETAILS:

Track 1 (2:45) "Memories Of Home Replaced By Dreams" (Village Area Theme)
Track 2 (2:40) "10,000 Hinoki Trees" (Forest Area Theme)
Track 3 (2:20) "Purification Ritual" (Waterfall Area Theme)

Even through a set of self-imposed constraints the music still turned out fantastic! It really does capture that feel of Chrono Trigger and Boards of Canada for me, wonderful job!

I did not realize you solely used the sound font for Final Fantasy VII, this is an excellent demonstration of making something good out of constraints. It's a great mix of traditional instruments and modern sounds.

Memories Of Home Replaced By Dreams: I feel a nice calmness here but also a preparation to explore, I like the different swelling instruments throughout the track. The ambient elements are especially nice.

10,000 Hinoki Trees: I like the entrance of the choir and the bells leading a shift in tone at the climatic part of the track. It feels very mysterious to me, and the way the track constructs itself and deconstructs itself with many layers is pretty cool!

Purification Ritual: I think it is really cool what you did with composition here, and the bassline is a nice edition. I really feel the chrono trigger inspiration from this one, I am reminded a bit of the lake theme from pokemon diamond and pearl as well!

Overall, I think this soundtrack really cool. I get an ethereal dream-like feel from all of these tracks, and the criticisms I may have had were already mentioned by others(so not much to critique here). Nicely done!

The Purification Ritual was my favorite. Great job ! Excited to listen more of your work !

I think you did a great job with making game soundtracks here, great job!

Same to you, I really enjoy what you produced for this jam!

I'm getting some PROPER Okami soundtrack vibes on this especially the first track! Very well executed and I love the balance and overall mix on all 3 tracks. I love the ambience of the first track and the second track is beautiful. Really great job :)

Developer

I really appreciate you listening to all 3.  And I'm ashamed to say I haven't played Okami yet.  Your comment may be the push I need to go and buy it though...!  Thank you again!

I hear the Christopher Larkin influence a lot in this, I love his music.

I think the three tracks flowed naturally between each other, I can see this being part of the same world. The introduction to track 3 was also really well done, it immediately gave me waterfall vibes!

I think 10,000 Hinoki Trees was weighted a bit too much on the low end, it gave the track a heavy and tight feeling that goes against what I imagine a forest would be like. This could just be an aesthetic choice though, the track was still really nice to listen to and connected tracks 1 and 3 well in the story you wrote in the description. The vocals in the middle of that track brought a nice lightness to the track and also kept it interesting!

Overall very nicely done, I enjoyed listening to the soundtrack.

Developer

Great feedback, glad you got the waterfall idea in the 3rd song.  I feel like I've heard that descending piano motif in water areas in SNES-era JRPGs but failed to find a good reference so I just recreated what I heard in my head.  Also, I agree that 10,000 Hinoki Trees could use some brightness, even if I was going for a darker theme.  The higher elements are mixed really quietly.  Thanks again for listening!

I’m far from an expert for this, but in the music that I really enjoy I find that bright elements in a dark theme can really emphasise the dark/gloomy feelings from the rest of the instrumentation.

The Dirtmouth theme in Hollow Knight is an excellent example of this, the atmosphere set up by the low sounds get amplified a lot when the high registers come in (just like with the vocals in your track)!

Nice use of the fonts doesn't not sound "cheap" with all the reverbs but I might say there might be a tiny bit too much reverbs in general, it gives a nice atmospheric textures but maybe tone it down a bit or cut some reverbs frequencies like in the low-end mid. Fits the theme perfectly I enjoyed listening, nice arrangement. Good job.

Developer

Hey thank you for checking out my work.   Agreed, I overdid it with the reverb and I'm surprised you're the first to mention it.  I will pay closer attention to cramming too much reverb into the low-end mids in the future.  Great advice, and I look forward to hearing your future works, hoping you explore more generative stuff again.

This is one of my favorite works in the jam!
I think it fits the theme very well, mix is great and you got creative! (also, I gave you an extra point in the creativity for those song names, I mean, top shelf stuff!)

Take care :)

Developer

Thank you so much for taking the time to check it out!!  I tried hard to create track names that matched the areas/story and I'm stoked you picked up on that.  Cheers!

I loved it, all three tracks are really beautiful. I couldn't say which one was better because they are all gorgeous, but "10,000 Hinoki Trees" was my personal favorite: the melody is a journey and when it turns dark and gloomy it was very inspiring. The sound choice is aesthetically beautiful. I enjoyed it so much.

Developer(+1)

Thank you for the feedback.  It really means a lot.  Yeah, 10,000 Hinoki trees starts out a little optimistic and falls towards gloom without a big harmonic shift.   I think I was playing with the Dorian Mode (the major 6th and minor 3rd interval contrast) for that one.  Anyways, thank you again.  And please keep bringing that mind-meltingly delicious sound design to the table.  So good!!

Thank you so much! You are so kind, I'm so glad you joined this jam.

I like that all three tracks are combined into one. makes it feel like a progressive story

Developer

Really happy to hear you stuck around long enough to listen to all 3!  They were written as area themes for a simple little story.  Now that you mention it, I could have woven them together somehow to push the progressive element further.   Thank you so much for your thoughts!

I think using an existing soundfont was an interesting choice, at least you were upfront and honest about it.

Mitsuda and Larkins influence I totally hear, but Boards of Canada not so much at all. I think the composition is great but the mixing (especially the panning) could be a little less tight. The second and third track feel straight down the middle outside of a few panning trails in the delays used.

Overall super nice submission.

Developer

I really appreciate your constructive feedback.  In the future, I'll work on my stereo imaging and try to make my inspiration a little more audibly clear.  Thank you again for the great insight!
