Description
Like previous jams, kept a daily journal thing with all the sketches and other things made throughout the jam in more detail:
https://eetusuikkanen.wordpress.com/2024/11/18/impressions-composing-jam-imagination-2/

My initial plan for the jam was to make/start a new track each day, but I ended up with just 5 tracks that are most just over a minute long, pretty differing in styles and not that polished.

I lost motivation for music stuff halfway during the jam and couldn't really get myself to work on the tracks anymore, so I thought about not submitting anything. But since I'd got at least something done (albeit short and unpolished), decided to just submit what i had got done.

glad you submitted what you got done, 'cause it's really nice. I can definitely relate to losing motivation partway through a project, though. who knows, maybe someday the urge will strike to come back to these and flesh them out to a point you're satisfied with. what's here is already strong, and the weaker bits just need a little more refining.

I appreciate how much work you put into this! I particularly liked the piano piece. Some great motives across the different tracks. Good job!

awesome work, a good variety of styles! i'm afraid i won't have time to read through your journal but it's wonderful you've kept one to record your process (i should start doing that :D).

the beginning of "The Far Reaches" reminded me of Kyle Hnedak's "Forest Meadow", and i couldn't get the comparison out of my head for the rest of your submission - the styles you chose even resembled some of my favorites from Kyle's work on Death's Gambit.

i think the orchestration in 'Ethereal' is excellent.

the strings in 'Festival Of Souls' struggle with the vivid writing, and i actually think the violins are doing too much right off the bat. structurally, i'd appreciate an intro section that introduces some percussion and the lower staccato before gradually introducing the high string section (maybe the melody is played by a single voice once, before having the full section support it the next time around). fully engaging the strings right away feels sudden and kicks the dynamic energy up to a 100 right away, and since that doesn't change throughout the minute or so the track plays, it gets a bit tiring. thankfully, the track doesn't overstay its welcome - but i think i could enjoy it for a lot longer with some changes to arrangement.

aside from my comments there, i think it's a well-rounded submission stylistically and compositionally. i'm glad i still had the chance to hear an 'unpolished' version of your work. i apologize in advance if i'm being disrespectful!

Feedback is always great, so nothing disrespectful about it ๐Ÿ˜‰.

I hear what you mean with the Death's Gambit track. I didn't want to go with just using a lot of Japanese/Asian instruments to fit the painting, so i used a lot of stereotypical progression/melody stylings from stuff like anime shows for the first track, which the Death's Gambit track seems to Be influenced by too ๐Ÿ˜„.

Festival of souls and most of the other tracks could've used a lot more work since a lot of then are pretty much just the first sketches of the tracks ๐Ÿ˜…, thats why it its just the one main section without a proper start and end. I just lost all motivation to work on then anymore later on the jam... ๐Ÿ˜”.

Agreed with everything you mentioned, maybe a someday i'll actually FIX/finish theae properly ๐Ÿ˜‚.

You should totally give keeping a journal a try! Just writing ideas/thoughts down on paper while working on tracks really helps the brain to get working (at least for me).

Glad you liked then!

good luck with the polish if you ever get down to it. see you next jam! -w-

First track -

Cool to hear you getting more into improvisation on the piano.

Second track -

I liked this one when you posted in the discord.

Third track - The Road not Taken.

This reminds me a bit of Nothing Else Matters by Metallica heh. But its vibe is different and it works. I like the variations later though too, they give it that more Renaissance/Baroque vibe.

Fourth track - Ethereal

This one is my favorite - it's musically interesting with interesting textures, and I think the elements of it are more cohesive, and this one gets the most away from sounding overly MIDI.

Fifth Track - Approaching Evil

Compositionally this definitely interesting. I think there are a couple choices compositionally that don't quite fit, I think 8:35 kind of goes off a little bit - but the other stuff  before it, while unusual, actually definitely works, so definitely good job on that.

Great work, that's a lot of music you made for "not finishing!" :)

Developer

A lot of music yes, but most of them still pretty much "Works in progress" ๐Ÿ˜….

Composing progress for me usually goes: get an idea -> imrovise a sketch from it -> arrange that.

Glad you liked them!

I loved Ethereal a lot <3

Amazing tracks, mostly the Far Reaches, really loved it!
Composition is great and the mixing too, but sometimes you can feel the VSTish a bit, not in all tracks though, for example in the road not taken, really love the melody but I think the sound of it did take a bit from the experience :| Still great tho xD

Take care!

Developer

Glad you liked them!

Agree with you on the fakeness, especially with The Road Not Taken.

I initially played that on a piano sound and just put the midi to a nylon guitar sound without any editing so its not really idiomatic/realistic for the instrument.

I was intending to add some lyrics to the melody and re record the guitar to just comp that, but kinda lost motivation to do anything more later in the jam ๐Ÿ˜….

The quality is impeccable, it all sounds so cinematic and immersive. Amazing! My favorite track I kept replaying was Ethereal

Very glad you liked it!

Lots of content, impressive, very nice. As a pianist myself I always appreciate a nice piano piece for critical feedback I think the motif rythmic tend to be too much the same for too long, you obviously switch eventually but I think you can play a bit more with some variations and the playing too I can see the ups and down in velocity but I think you can control even more what you're doing. LA noire is a good plugin but I think it sounds for my taste a bit too bright, I suggest you use 2 pianos stacked together and see the mix in timbre you like to go for.  Good job :)

Developer

Yea, agree with you all the points. The left hand gets especially boring, since I haven't practiced enough to really be able to separate what I'm playing in each hand ๐Ÿ˜….

Haven't heard/tried of layering 2 piano sounds before, but will have to give that a try.

Piano solo was absolutely gorgeous!

Thank you! ๐Ÿ™

ahhh i'm such a sucker for long piano solo pieces like that! the far reaches kept a really interesting variation of harmonies and octave ranges while never really losing its central theme. great submission!

Developer

Thanks, glad you liked it!

Beautiful melody and harmony, simple yet elegant. I'm learning a lot from listening them. Great stuff!

"The Far Reaches" is a breathtaking example of establishing and developing a theme.  It keeps evolving and changing without losing the melody.  The masterful chord choices take us on a tonal journey.  Amazing work.  This suite is a masterclass in harmony.

Developer

Thank you for the kind words!

one of the best entries I've listened to. I think it's super cool that you also included a link to your journal entries fro each day, as well as little snippets into what your thought process was at the time. Felt much more impactful listening to each respective track while reading the journal log for the day it was made. My overall favorite would be the far reaches and its piano piece. great work!

Glad you liked it!

Been doing the jam journal for a while now and I really feel it makes me more productive.

I write these blog/journal notes usually after i end working on the jam for the day, but on the last impressions jam I also kept a physical notebook where i wrote down ideas as they came and I'm not sure if its just a placebo thing, but I felt more motivated/creative because of that compared to this time where i just did the end of day notes.

Highly recommend anyone to try out doing a jam journal even if it's just for yourself and you don't plan to share with anyone. Really helps to get the creative juices flowing (at least for me ๐Ÿ˜‰).
