Description
Wrote this track for the Impressions Composing Jam, not ambient in the music sense in that the notes change more than once a month but I feel it fits into the umbrella of video game ambience in that it could exist as the background atmosphere to a setting.
First time getting involve in one of these things and only just found about about this one with a day to go so this was written across a frantic afternoon/evening.
I'd love to hear any thoughts and criticism but just generally keen to be involved in the general. If you want to get in touch (would love to just chat and make new friends) drop me a message on my Instagram linked at the bottom or email me on archiegaultmusic@gmail.com.

Description of Setup (Optional but recommended)
All made using Eastwest libraries (Mainly Hollywood Orchestra and Hollywood Fantasy) except the mandolin which I recorded (badly) live.

Pretty cool atmosphere, a bit dark souls like but toned down, I think its nice the first minute then we're stalling a bit. You can also add some EQ at some point to the percussions and transient to make it pop a little more if you want to create more tension later on instead of keeping it the same, you did it at some point with the doublebass but I think it can be more in your face. But if we want to keep it ambiant it will need to be subtle. I think the overall mix can also probably get a little boost in dB. But thats pretty good overall , good job :)
Mandolin!!! I want more mandolin! Fantastic piece, perfectly fitting for an RPG, giving a sense of foreboding anticipation and ominous dark ambience. The thing which struck me as having more room for improvement were the repeated drums, needing maybe some work to make them sound more organic, and maybe centering more their panning (but that's maybe my headphones' problem), which were a tad heavy on the left ear because of the repetition. And the mandolin. Not because it was badly recorded, but because I want to hear MORE of it! Good job and welcome to the jam world!
Well done on a tight timeline! I will second what was said below: I would love to hear that Mandolin mixed up more in the forefront. It sounded great and I'd love to hear it more! I like the elements/instruments you worked with and it all seemed to fit well!
The Mandolin gets a little quiet in the mix. Don't let your lack of confidence deter you - you're playing it well, and the fact that it's human actually adds a lot MORE to the mix. Your playing is good. Play the crap out of that mandolin and do it every day, improvise.
I think the composition is also maybe a little static, but the idea is good. Improvising on simpler instruments is really a great way to develop a more dynamic sense, even if you're staying within a mode or a scale - it teaches you how to loosen up musically and it makes adding in complex things into improv a lot easier later.
Heh the male choir reminds me of my own voice in its timbre.
Great work!
Thanks for this really detailed feedback, this is exactly the kind of stuff I need to progress.
Mandolin was a bit of a carrying over from a very early draft when when it had a bit more of a slavic feel, I was then stuck in the situation where if it was removed that staticness you mentioned really set in. I'd probably have removed it if I had more time, but that's the beauty of doing stuff on tight deadlines sometimes. This is my first of these composition jams but it will definitely be appearing more in future.
Everything you've said resonates though and I'll absolutely be trying to take it on board going forward.
Thanks for your feedback though and taking the time to listen, very excited to go through and listen to everyone elses.
For something that is done in less than a day, I say this is pretty stunning. I enjoyed that very much!
Thanks! Definitely hoping to give myself more time going forward with future ones though.
We entered Moria, nice
Thanks! I won't lie, that scene with the goblins emerging from the seemingly abandoning Moria was definitely on my mind at certain points when working on this.
