Really fantastic job. The illustrations and animations are superb. The level of polish and playability for (what I assume to be) your first game of this kind is crazy. I hope you continue as a team because it seems to be working out very well.

I just scrolled down to look at other feedback before going on to mention anything I thought could be improved and it looks like other people have covered it so I'll simply say that I can't wait to see more from both/either of you.

The level of polish is amazing.  Very well done.

The Options menu was empty for me, a full screen/window toggle would be nice.  (Though Alt-F11 worked.)

It took a minute to figure out I needed to go up.  Making the playable elements stand out from the background a little more would have helped me.

Excellent submission!

I absolutely love the art and story here. I have a ton of thoughts, so I'll just write them out point form:

  • Love the transition
  • The cutscene implementation is no small feat. Bravo!
  • Nice camera!
  • The music fits really well, and I like the choice to have it slowly fade in/out
  • The text transition speed has already been mentioned, but I think most of the controls are missing immediate feedback. It makes the game feel a little sluggish
    • In the title screen, I'd cut the time the egg takes to fade to just a few frames.
    • For the textboxes, maybe have an indicator that the text is done (e.g., an arrow), and make the indicator disappear the moment an input is detected.
    • I'd also cut the textbox fade in half at least.
    • The landing particles are awesome, but underutilized. I would have at least some indicator every time the player lands so there's no confusion of where the ground is.
    • There should be some visual feedback that the player is preparing to jump while falling. It'd be nice to have a sprite specifically for that
  • Arrow key controls are essential
  • The text sounds only played in one cutscene for me, but they were great! I'd love to hear them everywhere
  • The character art and controls are great! I never would have thought of "fox on boingy egg" in a million years

Overall, amazing job! It's not often that you see a game jam platformer with so many features and as much charm as this!

thank you for taking the time to play! Really appreciate the feedback!

Wow, this was very adorable and cute.

I had a couple of issues: 1. the dialog skip inputs would sometimes feel a bit slow or not respond. Tapping again usually fixed it and continued playing the scenes. 2. there was no way to exit the game, so I had to ALT+F4 to get out.

The art is rather adorable, the game also works really well. I like the little bouncing when moving, and that it is actual bouncing instead of just an animation (meaning we can bounce and slip off an edge if we are not careful.) The charge up to jump higher also works pretty nice!

I kind of wish we had a gameplay answer for when an owl was attacking us. It seemed some would chase me but aside from running away we don't seem to be able to attack or fight back. Often, I just used the invincibility frames from being whacked to charge up a jump and run off to other parts of the level, that seemed to work but feels cheap.

The poor foxy needs a treat though, lol!

Developer

Thanks for playing and the feedback! Oof, forgot the exit button! Agree about the gameplay answer for the owls. There’s a little bit of momentum to acceleration with them now (so you can trick them into zooming by), but something still needed.

The scene transitions and opening cutscene are neat.  I think the dialogue is fun and well implemented, but could be scaled back just a little bit.  Everything is very polished: fantastic entry!

Developer

Thanks for playing and the feedback! For the dialog, scaled back in that there is too much dialog right now?

Submitted

I want to be clear: I am not any kind of skilled or competent writer, but it seems like you could tighten up (edit) the dialog without losing content.  There's a lot of love in the dialogue system right now, which is awesome - but the 'treacherous journey' feels like it might be in the back seat right now.

Fantastic! Fabulous! And Boingy to boot. Seriously good work here.

My only feedback is the same as @otaconio (who seems to generally have great feedback) … Make it possible to skip ahead in the dialog faster.

Otherwise, just wow!

Developer

Thanks!! There’s a couple of bugs with the dialog skipping. Any key should generally skip/continue, but its a bit sketchy. The scenes as a whole can be skipped with escape (but didn’t get the prompts yet).

The production value of this really stood out to me, especially the graphics!

It would be nice to be able to skip dialogue or make it go faster but it's not a big deal. Also, Highlighting platforms more so they look "climbable" can help the player see where they can go.

Amazing submission!

Developer

Thanks for trying and appreciate the feedback!

Yeah any keypress should generally skip the typing or other animations, but there is a few bugs with it. The entire scene can be skipped with escape, but that doesn’t help with getting things a bit faster :)

+1 to the visual clarity of some of the platforms. There are a few branches that feel like background pieces, but can be jumped on, and few others that don’t that can’t.

Nice was Fun I think it broke the first time through it as I couldn't get back to the marshmallows but did it again and it worked fine. Thanks for the submission.

Forgot to say I had Fun and the art is awesome! Thanks.

Developer

Thanks! Sorry to hear you got stuck! Do you remember any more details about what and where? Some of the mesh does need a bit more work. I’m sure there’s a few conditions where boundaries aren’t removed when they are supposed to be.

it was after the bear cave I went up and talked to lo. And I think I was supposed to be able to go left and back to the others but couldn't get through the tree. I was also able to bounce back to the bear cave after going in it and do the cutscene again so maybe that broke it.

I did the whole game again and it worked fine that time. So not sure was fun though.

That’s an incredibly impressive entry to the jam - The art and the music are super and the polish is off the charts!

Developer

Thanks for trying it out and for the feedback!

A foxtastic and eggcellent experience! Loved every aspect of it, and it's SUPER boingy! The humour and character interactions, the animations, the music, I was immersed. Excellent job!
