How is your game related to the Theme and Special Object?
In most games winning means crossing the finish line or scoring the highest points. But in this game, you’re a tomato with the sole purpose to fail. Your goal is to splat the tomato in order to progress to the next level. Try to collect as few points as possible. A little tip, reaching the finish line doesn't win you the game, it just reloads the level!
Good Luck and I hope you have fun!

Not bad indeed, 200 is a very respectable score!
And thank you so much! As  I mentioned to someone else below, I'm very fortunate to be in a position where I can spend every day learning game development, I have no work or school commitments. So for the last 7 weeks all I've been doing is grinding a bunch of game dev courses

Heyy, not bad! You're doing great for 7 weeks! Obviously pretty decent if I replayed for a high score :P nice job

Great game I had a lot of fun and love how you implemented the theme definitely one of my favourites! I scored 1400 gotta try get less next time lol

Developer(+1)

Wow thank you so much! Being considered as one of your favorites is a big honor.
I 200% believe you can get better than 1400!!

Awesome implementation of the Failure theme.  I love the creative gameplay loop which is really trippy in a way since it's so unique.  I just naturally kept wanting to collect the cherries, but the audio 'you suck' was the perfect punishment for doing so haha.  Very well-polished game as well, nice work!

Developer

Wow thank you so much for the kind feedback! I'm glad you liked the game, I really didn't plan on doing a Jam this weekend but when I saw the theme, I had this crazy idea and I just couldn't stop myself. I'm glad it worked.
There were 2 variations of "You suck" I wish I could have added more insults as SFX so it wasn't too repeaded but I really couldn't find any lmao, maybe I didn't look hard enough.

I really love the chore mechanic of the game. I think its really creative and I never even thoughts of that.
There might be some unintentional way to win a level, like some level I kinda just cheese it with fall damage before I even get to the bug.

The level design was pretty good with cherry to make it optional for people choose their own difficulty. But I think going for 0 cherry collected is frustrating since if you collect a single cherry you have to restart the entire game.

I was a bit disappointed when I tried to go for the other ending since I thought there would a special art or story for that ending, but it was just a sound.

I think there should be a mute button for the cherry sound effects, personally I can't really stand hearing things like that over and over again. Also the music fits with the game but I feels like I heard this song everywhere.

The animation and art is really cute, I love it (my favorite is the splattered tomato). But I would suggest adding more animation like idle, walking, jumping, falling, etc.

Lastly I was a bit laggy when playing on browser without full screen which is normally not laggy for me.

Overall solid game with really unique ideas for the theme of 'failure'. you really play into that word with flags to kill you and spike to continues and I love it.

Bonus : I'm not sure did you add coyote jump and jump buffering or not(because of the lag) but if you haven't I recommend looking into them since it will enhance the experience.

Thank you for the thorough feedback!

My girlfriend did find one way to cheese one of the levels by fall damage in play testing but I decided not to change the level design and thought of it more as an feature. The whole game idea is to find a way to die, that doesn't always have to mean you have to die the way the level is suggesting, you can find your alternative way. I was only able to work on it friday and saturday so I wasn't able to add more levels but if I had, it would have had alternative ways to die. So you can choose which path to take.

Regarding the 0 cherry achievement, I think that's the whole challenge right? If you look at other game achievements, the ones that are the most difficult ones to achieve, they are frustrating and hard to obtain but that's what makes it more rewarding.

Yeah I totally agree with you with the endings. I honestly just didn't have the time. I didn't plan on doing this Jam but when I saw the theme I had to. I had plans Sunday so I had to cut my Dev time short and I just displayed a simple score screen but 200% agree, getting 0 cherries wouldn't have been that rewarding because of the lack of end screen.

I'm still new to Game Dev but I would love to add an Audio menu where you can adjust the SFX and Music volume, this will be something that I'll be looking into in the future! and I can totally understand the cherry SFX getting very repetitive (although you should be avoiding them lmao). I very much doubt you've heard the song before, I created it using Suno, so it should be unique?

Not sure what could be causing the lag, first complaint I've seen about it. Could just be the browser? But if you think its something else, do run your theory by me because I would love to learn how to fix any lag issues for future games.
I did add coyote time (it was 0.5f seconds) but I'm unsure what you mean by jump buffering, could you explain it to me?

Again thank you for the very thorough feedback and I'm glad that you loved my game idea! I'm going to take everything into account and hopefully my next game will be even better! This is the reason why I do game jams.

Sorry for the song I thought it was the song that people used a lot, I heard song similar to this very often so.
For the lag, it might just be my browser. So I would recommend adding a downloaded version of your game for people who have laggy browser like me. And jump buffering is basically a timer after you press space bar. For example 0.1 second. If you press space bar 0.1 second before hitting the ground you will immediately jump when landing , even though you didn't press it on the ground.

Thanks for responding this long lmao.

Developer

Yeah I've seen you mention lag in other game comments. I honestly think its just your browser so I hope I am not marked down because of that. In the future I will have windows and Browser version available.
Hmm okay, I'll take a look into the jump buffering. Thank you!

This was a lot of fun! I scored 700, I don't know if that's good or bad.

I feel like this idea would work really well with some puzzles where you have to work out how to kill yourself.

Developer

Wow thank you so much!

I totally agree! My first idea was a puzzle game but I've never made one. Not even seen a single tutorial so I thought in the time frame I had it was best to do something I knew (platformer). I think someone could make a really cool puzzle game with this concept.

Ewww, this game sucks!! Jokes aside, I absolutely love the concept, it's so simple yet so creative and fun. I can't believe you're a game dev for only 7 weeks, amazing job! :D

Developer

Wow thank you for the awesome feedback and I'm glad you enjoyed the game!
I'm very lucky to be in a position where I can spend every day learning game development, I have no work or school commitments. So for the last 7 weeks all I've been doing is grinding a bunch of game dev courses, mostly from Udemy. Doing games jams is my way of testing what I've learnt, put it into practice and to avoid getting stuck in "tutorial hell" but there is still a lot more for me to learn and I still need to google things or refer back to an old course when I get stuck on something.

Nice surprice, I had a lot of fun playing this short game, I love the way you twisted the "level completed" mechanics to fit the theme. Nice submission, I only wish there'd be more of it !

Developer(+1)

Wow thank you for the kind feedback!
I know! As I play tested it, I too thought it needed more levels but unfortunately I just didn't have the time. Unfortunately most Game Jam are done over the weekend which is usually when I have other plans, I didn't plan on doing this Jam because of my plans on Sunday but when I saw the theme and the special object I couldn't stop myself. I sacrificed my sleep on Saturday for it but it was well worth it!

Cool concept. nice gameplay, there  isn't anything to complain about though I dont think the tomato fits the rest of the art

Developer

Wow thank you for the kind feedback.
And yeah... that was the risk I took by using other assets this game jam instead of trying to make my own. Sorry if that took away from the experience.

Very nice! I scored 1000. That probably means i lose lol

This was confusing for my brain. When i accidently died and went to the next level i did not understand why. I thought i failed. I guess i really did and in return i succeed?  ...

Developer(+1)

"I thought i failed. I guess i really did and in return i succeed?"
Exactly! This was my weird little brain working when I came up with the idea of the game.
Basically, Dying progresses you further, Crossing the finish line reloads the level and you want to refrain from collecting those delicious looking cherries.
I'm glad you liked it! I hope you can revisit the game when the Ratings open up to give me a rating.
I'm looking forward to playing your game when the scoring opens up and I really appreciate your feedback/ comments :)
