Description
This soundtrack was made for a fictive visual novel called « Lily And The Djinny ». Based on that amazing visual by @Avyary, I had to go on with music and poetry… So that would stick to other mesmerizing arts in the same atmosphere and spirit.
Imagine this game as a short visual novel where you’ll have to guide Lily through her questionning and enchantements.
Title Screen – Wish Upon A Star
Lily has always belived there was some magic hiding in the world. Maybe she has some powers herself. She listens to the landscapes to let her soul touch a bit of magic. Whishing to fill the void...
Chapter 1 - Contemplate
Lily looks at the immense sky and wonders, her thoughts go from contemplation to nostalgia, asking herself what she would do if her wish came true…
Chapter 2 - Soaring In Purple Skies
Lost in her mind, Lily elevates herself above the clouds and then realises she left the ground. Flying feels good, good bye home, wherever it is...
Chapter 3 - The Magic Music Box
Above the sky in a violet sea, close to the moonlight, she finds a music box. Cranking it makes a genius appear, Djinny. They dance together and as the music unfold she understand deep inside that the genius has read in her soul and has promised her bliss.
Final Chapter - Dor
Lily must come down to earth, leaving Djinny makes her torn apart. She has to say goodbye to these wonderful moments while she eproves varied mixed emotions, but in the end she’s descending with bliss, she found peace. The landing, back home, feels like her soul is fulfilled and resolved.
Thanks to the genius, Lily has seen her wish granted. Maybe she never really left the ground. But who cares ? She now knows that there is no void to fill. :)

To make this, I used Cubase Elements, a lot of Spitfire's BBC Orchestra free plugin and some sounds from my Roland synth and a few others plugins.
Message from the artist:
A short poetic visual novel !
Theme:
How does it fit the theme?
Well I think the piano and the etheral wurlie reverb gives a fitting atmosphere with the picture.
All along I was composing with a kind of "story" in mind. At least I had several emotions inspired by the sentence "Wish upon a star" and this magnificent art !
The soundtrack translate the internal trip/feelings of someone set in this calming visual. It gives both nostalgia, melancholia, joy and so on... Then the theme suggest hopes and fears, imagination too.
So... that was the mix ! :)

Yours is my favourite submission. I don't know, it sounds retro but modern. It's tasteful. Favourite track: Contemplate.
Ooooo, this is stellar, and absolutely beautiful, wow
They're all so wonderfully composed
I don't have much to say but this submission is one of my favorites so far
thanks for sharing~
My favourite submission so far. Absolutely gorgeous music here!
This was super cool! I loved the small little details everywhere, really brings the pieces together. Super cool entry!!!
This was so poetic and beautiful. The story is simple but very evocative and let's the mind wander. The simplicity of the melodies represent this perfectly and are beautifully accompanied by intertwining harmonisations which elevate the whole OST. The chord progressions are beautifully crafted and perfectly embody the feeling of each track (I'm thinking of the ascending chords in "Soaring in Purple Skies" for example).
The mix is also very intriguing, I might be wrong but I thing there is some pretty heavy saturation on the keys at some points which gives it a slightly vintage feel that I loved. Also the bass synth in"The Magic Music Box" is beautifully full and rounded but still leaves places to the high pitched plucks which I felt represented pretty well the powerful Djinny welcoming Lily in his sky domain. All in all this was a fantastic entry!
Thank you for the feedback! Actually I need to practice mixing a lot as it's something new for me but the saturation on the keys on the final was not intended to be that much.. I had no time left and thought that it would be okay but I didn't like it ^^. However I did my best on the Magic music box to manage the bass sounds and the kalimba but I had to tweak around sometimes by using a filter on the drums or stuff like that to avoid mixing skills I don't have yet haha.
Glad you liked it overall!
very well done. great use of the piano. the whole project felt calm and collective. the drums on the fourth track was a surprise at first but the groove caught on and felt fitting to me. the use of strings throughout the project were great in my opinion too. great work on this.
Thank you very much!
Nice use of piano and reverb! I think they convey the mood exactly as you intended. The whole soundtrack sounds like you are in a magical journey under the moon - a journey of self-discovery.
I was surprised when the drum beats came up in Chapter 3. Is that intended to portray the Djinny? It sounds catchy and seems to imply Djinny's personality as happy-go-lucky.
Exactly! The Djinny is supposed to be carefree, happy-go-lucky works well. The drum beat was here to enhance the dancing aspect of this encounter while the kalimba and bass represents his also playful personality. The whole thing is about her finding peace and bliss in a magical/metaphoric way so yes :)
Glad you appreciated!
Yo... no kidding "the magic music box" is my favorite track so far from this entire jam. I'm not proficient with music theory or anything but it feels kinda jazzy-funky to me. I think it sounds kinda romantic or so, it does make me feel very relaxed as well, listening to it made me happy. That song really stood out for me but the rest are also good, have nice progressions, sound beautiful, and fit well together. The piano parts are all sooo good as well. Really hope this makes it in the top 5 cause it deserves it imo
Thank you very much for the words :)
Great job! Every track is so neat and polish and a perfect environment for a mystical world.
Thank you! :)
These songs are all so good! Right from the opening phrase followed by the nostalgic zelda-adjacent piano melody I was captured in this story. The music is so soothing and pensive that I ended up just leading against my hand and closing my eyes until The Magic Music Box lifted me out of it. And the opening of that song has to be my favorite moment! Lastly, great job ending with a return of the main nostalgic melody with the uplifting orchestration. It was incredibly satisfying! Loved it :)
Haha so good! Thank you very much for these words. I'm glad you could just relax and enter the audio story that much ^^
Wish Upon a Star: The sea ambience noises add a lot to the track with the sound of waves and the bubbling water noises. This melody is also very well-crafted and suits a main theme extremely well. This piece sounds like a lullaby almost and is very calm, fitting a title screen for a game very well.
Contemplate: I love the sparseness of the instrumentation. This makes me imagine big open space like the sky or the ocean. The continuation of the ambience is a great stylistic choice to help the OST flow. The chords you chose add a feeling of curiosity to the track that mirror’s the main character’s wonder perfectly! I think that the building of the instruments (especially the bass) is a cool choice that doesn’t necessarily indicate rising danger, but hints that feelings or questions are getting stronger/bigger.
Soared in Purple Skies: The piano rolls and the space between them is very relaxing. The sweeping synth that enters at about a minute into the song fits the soaring vibe very well and I think this is the point that I start to sense a transition from more water-like ambience to air-like ambience. The piano, strings, and glockenspiel all work really well together to continue the momentum forward at the end even though the resolution keeps getting danced around until the very end.
The Magic Music Box: The arpeggios at the beginning are so magical. The bass and drums with mallets paint a really cool picture of the Djinny and adds a feeling of levity and relaxed energy that hasn’t been felt in your OST yet. Your overall song structure is fantastic with an intro and related outro and the deaccelerando leading into the outro.
Dor: This track conveys wistfulness very well. You do a great job of capturing the spacey-ness of her descent from the heavens as well. I LOVE the return of the main motif in the simple piano melody. Then the build with the strings is heart-wrenching! The build-up to the brassy end is also very magical and ends with such a satisfying conclusion. Excellent work and thank you for sharing!
As always thanks a lot for the deep feedback :) I like how these kind of comments allow you to read through your own composition with a new point of view! And I'm happy to see that the vibes of each song were well transmitted/received!
The beginning of the first track is very nice, the gentleness of it and the higher melody really do give the impression of what the title suggests, wishing upon a star. I like how it starts out really piano driven but then at the end it’s these bells, the transition happens so smoothly.
My favorite song has to be the fourth one though, I love the part when the beats join in and the playful feel the song gives, it matches perfectly with the story you described :)
The last track is a nice touch too! It feels so bittersweet.
Good to know it made you feel those emotions! Thank you very much :)
What a lovely intro in Wish Upon A Star ! it really sets the vibe to the game in a gentle way.
The "thème d'accord"' in Contemplate personally gave me a hint of Debussy, an ooh moment XD
Lovely progression by 3rd in Soaring In Purple Skies, which illustrates perfectly the flying(nice touch with the gliss at the end!)
And then a pleasant surprise of the drum track in The Magic Music Box, it brings some diversity to the soundtrack while staying completely coherent.
Nice transition for Dor, which sounds like a nice recapitulation of the game with a very satisfactory ending.
I can really see the attention you brought in the orchestration and the construction of the soundtrack, great job!!
Definitely a little nod to Debussy used as a transition in Contemplate! ^^ thank you for the attention!
I think my favorite is The Magic Music Box, but this whole OST is beautiful and atmospheric, which is perfect for a visual novel. Really good work, and I love the story line you have as well!
I didn't expect The Magic Music Box to be such a favorite! Thank you very much :)
This is great! I feel like your sense of pacing in these tracks is your biggest strength - from the chord progressions, to the melodies, to the overall weight of the instrumentation at any given moment, it feels like you're being brought on a journey through the tracks instead of just casually listening. I feel like you really nailed the theme with the combination of the pianos, bells (+ music box?), long string notes, and then those very lightly distorted sounding plucks. After the first few calm songs, magic music box is really really fun, with it's super satisfying groove going along with instruments reminiscent to the rest of the soundtrack. All in all, great stuff! good work on this.
Thank you this comment is very encouraging! I really appreciate :)
This is just so pretty. Your music fits the theme 100% and makes me think of a classical movie soundtrack for a Hollywood musical, with the gentle piano, the sweeping strings and the dream-like arpeggios. I also really liked the addition of the synthy bass and electronic percussion in The Magic Music Box, if fits very well. Everything just flows. Such lovely work! Great entry. <3
Thank you very much for these words, I like the classical Hollywood comparison haha ^^
Wish Upon a Star had a really fascinating start, and I can tell already that this will be a really cool track just by the subtle, interesting audio effects. This is a beautiful, lilting, simple melody-- enjoyed the harp countermelody. Great start, definitely establishes a serene mood for the rest of the soundtrack.
Contemplate starts sparsely-- good move here, as every track doesn't need to be overloaded with instruments.
Soared in Purple skies felt improvisatory and free-- I quite liked it. This was the most varied of the tracks so far. Beautiful modulations and chords, and cool synths! You can feel the moment where she begins to fly away-- magical!
Lovely change of pace at The Music Box! I enjoy how, despite the upbeat tempo, the track remains relaxed and chill.
Dor has such lovely, interesting chords in the beginning: I've noticed all throughout that you use directionality in your music to indicate rising, falling, etc. This track had some iffy harmonies at one point early on, but this was brief. The return of the opening theme was a tender moment-- things like these help music sound more heartfelt.
Overall, this was a lovely soundtrack that perfectly channeled the chill, starry vibes of the jam :) nice job!
Thank you for these words. Somebody told me something similar about the directionality you mentioned, not sure what that means. I guess I like to feel music going somewhere and it's a way to achieve this..? Movement.
I really appreciate the detailed feedback and it is very encouraging! I want to keep exploring/learning on harmonies and develop the incredible language that music is :) thank you for the motivation!
Loved it! Composition and comtabality between the pieces are amazing. Great job.
Yeah the idea was that it could be only one music piece so I'm happy you mentioned it! Thank you :)
Wish upon a star - Simple, pretty, and catchy theme, developed in separate instruments. Very nicely done!
Contemplate - this is very soothing and dreamy, made me somewhat sleepy.
Soared in Purple Skies - I love the harmonies in this one, and the arpeggios are glorious!
Magic Music Box - ha, did not expect that beat. Very different from the rest but fits in so well! really neat harmonies here, too. This is my favorite.
Dor - Very glad to hear the title theme again here, and the fanfares at the end, the best conclusion I could have hoped for!
What a magical soundtrack, excellent job!
This is a very heartwarming feedback! Thank you for detailing the impact each track had on you.
And I'm really glad you liked that fanfare ending as I had it stuck in my mind while composing the other tracks ^^ it was such a relief to get to it, felt like a double conclusion in a way haha! Thank you very much!
This is really good! The composition is amazing, The Magic Music Box is such a groove. There are times where the mix suffers a bit and feels too bass heavy/muddy, but your skill at composing more than makes up for it in my opinion. Good job!
Thank you for these words! I definitely need to improve mixing/Mastering as I barely have notions in that section so your comment is very encouraging me in this way.
I really appreciate your feedback :)
