Description
The soundtrack was inspired mainly by a mixture between Tunic's OST by Lifeformed and Janice Kwan, and The Pokemon Mystery Dungeon OST (A bit from all games, though the sound mainly resembles the DS era games) by Arata Iiyoshi, Atsuhiro Ishizuna, Hideki Sakamoto, Keisuke Ito, Ryoma Nakamura, Kenichi Saito, Yasuhiro Kawagoe, and Noriko Murakami. It features atmospheric synths blended with SNES-DS era sampled instruments. It was created in LMMS, and I mainly composed by messing around and finding out!
Message from the artist
I will be frank, I am very much an ameture music artist. This is mainly supposed to be practice for my music creation. I do not know any music theory, and I cannot play any instruments. However I am quite proud of what I've done here! I didn't get to make all the songs I wanted due to being mostly uninspired this week (musically speaking). However I'm proud of what I did anyways! And I hope you enjoy and understand! I am excited to get some constructive criticism from people more experienced than me, and I wanted to thank you immensely for checking this out!
Theme
How does it fit the theme?
Most of the inspiration from the theme came out in the story and in the sound of the soundtrack. The story involves Jorwyn trying to make the world his own so that he can fix it. There was also an influence from the image used in the jam , it felt very dreamy to me, thus inspiring the whole dream part of the game.

Temple and The Nightmare are my favorites. IT'S CREEPY
In general, your soundtrack conveys the emotions that old games give us very well! Very exciting and fun! (But the two tracks still scared me a little, huh)
Some cool ideas in here! I dig the variety of instrument choices and the different tones that come with. Pan Flute and Dragon has such a different, more melodic and soft mood to it than the gritty and mildly oppressive The Nightmare.
I love the play on words with The Sleepy Sleepless Village, and you've chosen fantastic instruments to set the stage here. The melodies are pleasant a little lethargic sounding which conveys that sleepy vibe perfectly.
And to All, a Good Night is a nice one to close out on; it has that end-of-journey feel to it and I dig the synth patches, nice and pleasant to listen to. Not quite the fanfare that accompanies victory but more of a quieter, down-tempo kind of personal win, which is cool.
All in all, great work, especially considering the lack of theory - I imagine at points this could serve as a boon and help bolster creativity without limits. I hope you had a blast with it all! Best of luck. :)
You said you wanted constructive criticism so I shall give it.
In some tracks, most notably the last track, you have 3 different instruments all playing the melody while there is also bass and a choir for backup.
While doubling up on a melody works fine, it is leagues more interesting to add a harmony line. Something playing alongside the melody but with different notes.
Those combined notes in my opinion are what causes music to feel enthralling.
Well, it seems you don't need to learn music theory to do great work... Super solid submission all around!
Thank you!
For someone who doesn't know theory and doesn't play an instrument, this is super solid. Your sound selection and mixing are quite good and I enjoyed the scary sounds at the beginning of "Temple" as well. Definitely keep going! I highly recommend learning basic theory since that'll help you understand what makes a song good and reproduce those concepts more easily.
I also just noticed te Vital VST galore in the screenshots lmao. I love that synth as well.
Thank you for your feedback! I definitely want to learn more about theory, but I figured I would figure out where to start from the feedback from this jam! Also yeah I am a huge fan of vital!
Really nice story that felt complete! I love the recall of instrument to invite more emotion later on in the OST and all the writing was well thought out. Great job!
Thanks for the feedback
"Pan Flute Dragon" very cool groove. Caught myself dancing along to it. Best song of the bunch.
The rhythm in "Take a Rest" didn't really do it for me tbh and it sounds a bit harsh at the top end of the pitch.
Love the bass tone in "The Nightmare" but wasn't a fan of the chopper tone. Tbh I felt you could've done more with this one, maybe add some drums or something?
"The Sleepy Sleepless Village" works well melodically and harmonically. I like the tape delay echo (that part reminded me of "Lavander Town" from pokemon).
"The Temple" is mysterious and ominous. The deep pad emphasizes the piece's tone. Really like the transition at 1:30.
"Ascension" works well if used in the context of a cutscene. I like the morphing tone on the synth.
"And to All a Good Night" had a nice callback to the motiff from "The Sleepy Sleepless Village" towards the end.
Thank you for your feedback
This is mainly a relaxing submission, except for some of the tracks like "The Nightmare" and "Temple" which makes the imaginary game more intriguing.
The first track is nice, some melodies don't get along well with other melodies though, but doesn't ruin the song.
Take A Rest is short but good.
The Nightmare is unnerving and spooky, nice.
Temple is also creepy but I find this to be better than "The Nightmare" because it's more fleshed out and that pad mmmm, I think this is my fav track.
Ascension has the same saw arpeggio from the first track which makes the song more
I love that NES Triangle wave on the 7th track, this is a good closer.
The tracks are well mixed, nothing is too distracting.
Some of the instruments could be changed (the saw wave on "Temple" could switched with a wind instrument since the theme is "Temple") and the melodies could be improved, but in general this is good.
Nice work!
Thanks for your feedback
Pan Flute and Dragon: I was immediately struck by the very modal, off-puttingly dissonant melody that opens this piece... most 'amateur' musicians, as you put it, shy far away from dissonance, aiming to make everything sound clean, if a little bland. This track is impressively gritty, with creative uses of register (low, buzzy synths) and very interesting harmonies.
Take a Rest: this track was short and insignificant-- which is exactly what rest tracks should be. I can tell you have an ear for how music should sound based on its function. The piece is built around a pentatonic scale, which lacks dissonance-- yet we shift and down a half-step, and there are some moments of tension. It's a well-balanced piece.
The nightmare: I love the way these opening synths physically tickle my brain-- it aurally confronts us with what, I'm assuming, is the boss of this game.
The sleepy sleepless village: This opening synth line is like a happy lavender town! I will say, the entrance of the rest of the ensemble was rather abrasive-- perhaps you could have staggered the entrances of the instruments? Also, that 7 chord on the third measure of the loop has a lowered 7th, or 'te', that clashes with the normal, raised 7th, or 'ti', in the synth ostinato (forgive my classical jargon). Always make sure that all of your harmonies are aligned, and that clashes like these really are intentional!
Temple: another piece that makes good use of dissonance! I love the low, rumbling chords and high choir that counteract the ostinato. I've heard it said that using high and low registers is a great way to create fear in music!
Ascension and And to All, a Good Night are both fairly simple tracks, and I have little to say about them, other than, great way to wrap up the soundtrack.
My only wish is to know the story behind these tracks! I wish I knew a little more about Jorwyn, his mission, and the people in the sleepy sleepless village-- among other things. However, it's clear you have lots of promise as a composer. If you can iron out the harmonic errors here and there, you've clearly got a strong understanding of how to translate vibes to music-- fear, rest, magic, etc... bravo, and keep writing!!!
Thank you very much for your feedback!
The truth is that most things that I end up doing are completely by accident! I generally just play by ear and see what happens. The only music theory I know is keys (like C-B) and time signatures, outside of that I have no idea what I'm doing.
And I realyl appricate the musical jargon, it helps to research and learn from it!
Thanks once again!
I like the main character's design quite a bit. I also like the blend of chip-tune and real instruments.
Pan Flute And Dragon goes hard, as others have pointed out. I just love the premise of a dragon main character who's only armed with a pan flute. The Nightmare sounds unnatural and otherworldly in a fitting way. Actually, I just like the instrumentation all around, I feel that they tend to compliment each-other nicely. The Nightmare sinking into Temple, becoming a bit more triumphant, and having the echoes of distant music boxes was atmospheric and nice.

Thanks!
Pan Flute And Dragon - Love that intro. Really feels like something big. Composition of the rest is quite interesting as well. The harmony is a little odd in a few points - but it works out well.
Take a Rest - It fits the name well! Chill.
The Nightmare - Again, fitting of its name. Super dark and nightmarish.
The Sleepy Sleepless Village: A pretty chill track. A few jazz moments in there, was quite interesting haha! Definitely feels like a night time track to me.
Temple - What an ominous sound. Very atmospheric.
Ascention - Definitely an ascending feeling going on here!
Ant To All, A Good Night - Got a jazzier feeling than the other one. Then, the other orchestration kicks in. It works very nicely!
Thanks for your feedback! If you wouldn't mind elaborating a bit on the weird harmony in Pan Flute and Dragon, that would be great!
I did not expect that intro in "Pan Flute and Dragon"! Great track.
Haha thanks!
