I liked this game. It was fun to play, the idea is good. Only, as others mentioned too, the controls were a little bit confusing at the beginning. I wish they were more intuitive . I would love to see a little bit more variationss between customers, because you went for a comedic style, they should talk more and maybe throw a joke here and there for the fun sake.
Overall i like the idea itself, the stick man style and the usage of audio.
A very fun game, amazing idea.
The controls were a bit weird at the beginning, I wasn't sure what was triggering the action I thought that when holding it it just changed the item. That it said B did not help, but I figured it out in the end and had fun playing.
The stickmen were well drawn, the voice acting funny and the little girl super creepy :)
Good game. Very fun. Buttons were confusing at first. It said to use B when it meant to say use space. Also small glitch (game permanently froze) at ponytail level, happened twice. Other than that very fun.
I liked the music and voices you used and you did well to keep it a one button game.
Controls were confusing at first, but after I got the hang of it the game was pretty fun. Love the music and sound effects. Love the simplistic art style.
Interesting concept.
The controls are a little tricky to understand at first and kind of slow, but after learning them it gives you more control over which action you get, with intervals between the different sections being used to cancel an action if you don't want it, which I thought was quite nice.
I think that the sequences required to shape the hair as needed could have been explained better, but overall it's intuitive if you understand what the different hair styles look like.
One piece of criticism I have which could have made the game better would be improving the randomiser for deciding which hair cuts so that the same haircut doesn't appear twice. On one stage there were three or four customers in a row that asked for an afro when I played. This isn't too much of a problem but I think it would make the game seem like a slightly more polished experience.
Overall, solid game and well done for adding music and sound!
Well this sure was an interesting experience!
Initially on getting the game loaded up i wasn't really sure what i had gotten myself into, the loading screen took a little while but i took the time to read all the information while i waited.
Thank god there was a practice level because i had no idea what was happening. Eventually though once i got my head around the controls it was a lot of fun figuring out how many cuts were needed and how much spray was required to get the right hair styles.
However once into the main game i did find the game lagged behind my inputs a little. Sometimes i lost precious seconds waiting on the animation to do its thing and except my exceptional hairdressing skills. However even with the game stealing my seconds i still managed to produce some fresh trims.
The art style felt fitting and the background music and hand made sound effects were pretty great!
You did a fantastic job of using a single button input to achieve multiple tasks, however i feel like if you were to expand the game by adding additional tools etc for other hairstyles this could become a bit awkward.
Overall was a really enjoyable game i had a good laugh at the correct way to do a ponytail!
The controls where a bit awkward at first, but definitely enjoyable to play. The art style is a good choice, and it's all round a bit of fun.
Very good use of the spacebar to control, and i love the simple aesthetics. Especially the poses the customers make when you do their cut right. Good stuff Gabe!
Took a bit of time to get used to the controls, but an excellent example of one button with multiple uses. I also really liked the puzzle element, some haircuts required you to cut all of the hair before growing it again, great idea.
Not sure why it took so long to load. Is that an artificial loading screen?
Fantastic game.
Amazing game, however I was very confused on the controls at first, it took me a while to get the hang of it but once I managed to figure it out it was very fun, I like how you really made use of the one button control restriction :)
Amazing game, I was really surprised at how well you used the one button concept. While I was a bit confused on how to play at the start, once I figured it out it was great fun.
The sounds in the game were also great, even took me off guard a little when i first messed up a hair cut.
Only issue really was the loading screen.
This game is great fun to play! You really made use of the one-button mechanic which we had to use, out of curiosity, what game engine did you use to develop this if you used any?
It did take a rather long time to load this game and there are a few things which are odd to me.
The quality of the loading screen didn't match the style of the game, why is the loading screen a science bubbly thing in blue and green and the rest of the game black and white with stickmen? I feel like some chopping scissors in black with a white background would've been a better loading screen for this game.
Great job on the cover image, I like your use of inverted colour and gradient and glow!
I really like the soundFX used for this too, it adds some comedy into the game, and it reminds me of those little hairdresser minigames I used to play on GirlsGoGames.com
Your use of the one button was great, holding it down to switch between the two, although I feel it would be more accessible of a game if you were to change this from b to the space bar or mouse button, since a child could play this who doesn't know how to read for example, and these are the most common buttons which are used in small minigames.
Perhaps you can try and implement an arrow which points to the object which is being used, since making them glow 2 different colours is a bit confusing.
Another thing, making some of the hairstyles didn't make sense! But that's okay, just a nitpick, for example, cutting the hair super short and then growing it to make a ponytail? xD
Much appreciated!
I was initially using Unity for this project, but I kept running into issues so I ported my assets/existing code to an old version of nCine.
You raise a good point with the loading screen; initially I was going to stick with an animated barber pole but I made a last minute call to use a stock loading screen instead. It doesn't really mesh with the rest of the game, so I think I'll add that pole back in. In future revisions, I'll work on the accessibility/UI elements a bit too.
(and honestly I wanted to add more tools like hair ties and sponges, but the timeframe limited me there 😔)
Thanks for the advice! :^)
You still have plenty of time!
