The last continue-it jam I tried doing some hybrid 2d/3d stuff and it didn't work out. So this jam I have decided to start on an even smaller scope. I will do another 2d/3d game, but only the first area. In fact not even that. I am thinking of having a character that can move about and interact with objects that can impact the game, as in change brightness or resolution. In other words it's going to be a glorified options menu!

Additional goal:  Since I am doing 3d stuff, I want to create models that I can use to save time for future jams. My own asset pack so to speak. Normally I would create everything during the jam but my past experiences tell me that that is not feasible for me.

Fallback plan: I still have the shambles of my MGGJ10 game that could be recyled. Or maybe just another card game. Hopefully it won't just turn into snake again.

I have not. I checked the first level as far as I could. On the second level I jumped over the houses and tried the sand hill but have yet to find her.

Alright. I finished the story, got all characters, equipment and achievements.

I don't actually know what to write about so have a tier list of my thoughts on the characters and equipment in reverse order:

F tier: Nothing. Anything is better than nothing.

E tier: 1 star equipment. Only useful until you can get the higher tier spirit and artifacts.

D tier:

  •  Most 2 star equipment.
  • Oldhar. The first character. If your team is dying you are doing something wrong. And deliberatly killing allies for an extra 12 damage does not seem worth it. The might buff is nice but overall too random to make use of it.

C tier:

  •  Most 3 star equipment and Might and Luck 2 star artifacts. I value dps stats higher than survivability items because there is no need to tank if there is no attacker.
  •  Yume. Early game she is fine but vs bosses she tends to be sub par as after the first sleep they usually get a 10 round sleep immunity.
  • Amai. Interesting concept of creating items and using them but it costs 2 rounds to heal someone. Is a decent pairing with some 5 star artifacts.
  • Mayu. Your first tank. Poison seems very weak around 5 damage? She is your first AoE character so you will be using her for a while.

B tier:

  • 4 star spirits and 5 star artifacts. Well that looks strange doesn't it? But I find that many of the 5 star artifacts are worse than the 4 star artifacts. Some work well on especially healer characters while others are questionable like fiery gloves.
  • Ayumu. Your first dps character. I mistakenly built her with a lot of agility but perhaps it is better to go full luck instead? Late game she falls off damage wise and becomes a tanky AGI buffer.
  • Homura. Speaking of fiery gloves Homura is probably the only hero on which that item can work. But compared to just stacking might it will still fall behind. Burn seems to be like poison, very low damage. Maybe I just don't understand how she works, especially the matchstick mechanic. She is very tanky though and the 1.3 multiplier is quite good.
  • Hime. She is very tanky but is a dps character? High crit chance and crit damage but on a 1.0 mutliplier but only one attack at 1.0 multiplier. Maybe I don't understand how she interacts with buffs but it seems like it doesn't increase much of her damage.
  • Cathy.  The only character in the game that can buff LUCK which is very strong with certain builds. However everytime I use her coin toss ability I get angry when it deals 0 damag. So no A tier for you.
  • Harold. Very flexible character. Has AoE. Other than that has quite a bit of randomness to the damage/heal numbers but not by much. Low AGI though.
  • Ennea. Tanky. Like Hime she ignores defense. I just can't think of a character with more than 5 defense.
  • Aoi. Actually I haven't him much but from my limited playtesting he seems to be ok.

A tier:

  • Most of the 5 star spirits and 4 star artifacts. Here again why 4 star artifacts are better. Radiant Defense Shard is + 5 Defense. Cement clogs is +7 but also -4 Agility. Can work on healers, but buffers and dps need that agility. The spirits don't have that problem except if you compare spirit of Harold to Immortal Lightning Spirit with 15% and 20% chance to paralyze. Though Spirit of Harold makes up for it with 4 stat points.
  • Santa Claws. Can buff AGI and Might at the same time. Can heal and reduces debuff duration by 1. Naughty list is a straight up 12% damage increase. Very good.
  • Jolanda. Quite strong for a tank character. AoE is very useful.
  • Akane. The captain falcon of the roster. Has the highest damaging move in the roster (3 * 1.0) but it takes time to setup and costs sanity. But alternatively you can use her as a might buffer that lasts 5 rounds!

S tier:

  • Coal and Gold Coin Spirit and Might and Luck 4 star artifacts. The faster you kill the faster you can pull more gacha.
  • Midori. While she doesn't actually help you kill faster she is arguably the most important character in the story. You get her early and she will be your main source of CC and heals until you can one shot stuff. But even in the late game, since her heal is AoE she still has relevance.
  • Seassa. You can build her with Might to get a consistent amount of damage out of her, or you can build her with Luck and one-turn the 6-3 boss every 5 attempts. Her AoE is terrible though. One stack needs to hit 4 enemies to be roughly equivalent in damage to simply using knife barrage twice. And at 0.6 the multiplier is not worth it. You are better off using super speed and usign knife barrage twice on the tankiest target and watch it melt. although the mutliplier is only 0.3 for up 3 to 5 hits, if it crits it can do 40 + damage. More so if you use Cathy's buffs with the buff from Gold coin.
  • Yumi.  Similarily to Hime she gets a buff to increase her crit chance. Unlike Hime she gets three attacking skills. Four if you count the weakend version. A normal attack at 1.0, a stronger attack at 1.4 and a AoE at 1.3 or 1.0. 1.4 is a lot. Yes compared to Akane's 3 it is not that much but Akane's is actually closer to 1.5 due to setup requirements. In fact the other damage mutlipliers that come close when taking setup into account are Seassa if she hits 5(1.5), Homura (1.3 + burn), Jolanda, Santa Claws and Harold if they attack twice(2.0) and Cathy if she hits at all (2.0).

My party for farming 6-3 as I believe it to be the best time/rewards ratio:

Cathy, buffs Seassa

Ayumu, deal ~150 damage to the egg.

Jolanda, I just need an AoE that is not as slow as Harold.

Seassa, instant burst on the big Legion. On average I get 3 crits with super speed and knife barrage but it can get it low enough occasionaly for Yumi.

Yumi, big AoE in Round 1. Often times 60+ damage with arrow to finish off the boss.

2 Rounds needed. Rarely 3 if Seassa doesn't crit.

As it is a meme now on the mggj channel I have reached the famous  error loading scene. Your style and gameplay is always unique among all the other entries every mmgj. If I had to change something maybe I'd take a look at the damage output as the enemies tend to be damage sponges.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

:D. I didn't realize my gamepad was plugged in and it confused me that non of my controls worked. But after unplugging it worked fine, except for the E key. So I restarted the game and skipped the cutscene and accidently pressed esc again which closed the game.

But as always one of the most visually impressive games in the entire jam with great music and ui to boot.

(1 edit)

Yeah, got lazy. There is a quasi grid so that the snake won't eat itself unexpectedly and that might be what causes that laggy feeling.  Either that or the randomizer for the new point tends to take too long for a frame.

Thanks, it wasn't originally planned so I'm glad you like it.

I updated the page to include the links.

😊

I did not make the music as declared. But thanks for liking it.

Thanks.

Hey thanks, for playing. I did attempt to do it like Touhou 3, but still not good at it.

It was the browser version and language was German on Firefox.

:D

The game mechanic of turning into a comet is very interesting. I did encounter a couple of problems:

I died and had to restart the entire level, probably needs a checkpoint at the boss. Restarting caused the music to go silent. Only sound effects were left. Then at some point she didn't turn back out of comet form and I was just stuck.

Good job overall though.

This is a great first part.

Don't know why Ran thought this was hard. Then again I did skip most of Pisces by jumping down the entire level. Getting hit does cause the character to freeze until you let go or change direction which is a bit odd.

Overall a solid entry.

Oh, we went for a similar type of gameplay of VN with a bit of walking around. The lack of any sound needs to be remedied, but I'd say you are on the right track.

Very cute. Honestly my favourite looking game this jam.

Good job.

I'm told to tell you to add prebird.txt

Hey there, there's not much time left to rate games left. Will there be an update? If not, it's fine. I just won't be able to rate it.

Yes, browser version. I walked out of school and went to the right. I saw Policemen and two other people walk along the road so I assume the game didn't crash.

As for the typos I don't remember exactly anymore. Sorry.

It was a fun experience.

However I got stuck after leaving school. It didn't allow me to do anything, neither walking nor opening the menu. But seeing as you have said it should be around 2.5 hours I think it is safe to say that it is a bit too long for a jam in my opinion. A couple of typos here and there but a good entry otherwise.

Shibey at it again. Another great game.

I found the difficulty ok, though having bullets that can pass through walls feel a bit unfair. Didn't go for the evidences though, but they add a good amount of replayability.

As always, suberb.

It's a cute short game. It's fun just mixing and matching clothes accessories, but I think having them snap to the correct position would be better. Perhaps gloves would be a nice addition too as well as having a wider range of colors via a color selector.

Good job.

Interesting concept.

It's a simple short story: open beginning, open end. I like that it doesn't take long to go through all the choices since this is for a jam, though I do find that it ends very abruptly. Also I had trouble following the story, especially the dog who takes a flower and then the old guy comes along and it ends.

The art is very fitting to the setting, though there is not a lot of it.

Overall a good entry.

Intersting entry.

I thought Song of Morus was difficult with dodging bullets, but I couldn't tell if the bullets were targeted on the character or going to go past the hitbox. At least you are basically invulnerable.

Enemies popping out of thin air add difficulty, but feel unfair and sometimes they drop items that are outside the bounds for the player to collect.

Overall I think you did great.

I love the look of the game and the intro was incredibly good.

Of course I decided to walk of the path into the void and that is still possible.

Collecting cats and solving the dreams was fun for a while, but when it came down to the last few it turned into running around looking for that missing puzzle piece. Especially looking for the last house took a few minutes. Perhaps you could make a minimap or have the leftover houses be more obvious.

Great demo, keep it up.

Very cute.

The game is very intuitive and fun. At the moment it's a bit short but of course it's for a jam. The speed is a bit slow and I don't know if the first puzzle you encounter is solvable but it's a great start.

Thanks for your time.

My idea was to tell a story with minimal gameplay, but it backfired with people expecting more gameplay but not getting it. But yeah, I should make the dialog portions more comfortable to navigate.

I ain't animating all that fighting. That's the sad problem with being too lazy with learning 3d. Thanks for playing.

Yeah, it was supposed to only be a kinetic novel, but I see how the free sections give a wrong impression.

Thanks for the review.

Thank you for your patience.

Glad you like how it looks. That's really the only thing I take pride in.

Yeah, I was going for a VN. The moving around came about because I was inspired by Cherry Tree High School Comedy Club, a VN using sidescrolling instead of a map to move around. Thanks for playing.

Thanks for playing.

What do you mean Typical G4 game? My games are the best, the cream of the crop. /s

I don't like reading, so having voice acted portions, even if not fully, made the the game so much more enjoyable to me. It is a bit long for something I'd expect out of a jam, and the backgrounds don't fit well with the characters, but overall a incredible visual novel.

Very cute.

I like the idea of a build your own magical girl, though the game feels tacked on rather than part of it. Also it feels weird pushing towards the stall only to turn around and kill somemore shoppers for more money.

Good job all in all.

I like this, it's a start to a interesting puzzle plattformer.

The smoke mechanics are easy to understand and while not as intuitive ( why can smoke push buttons?) it does work magnificent.

The transform ability needs a bit of fleshing out but I do think this can very fun too.

Hmm, same here, game crashes after Wright makes his escape.

Also the sound effects don't stop after one starts, so there was that hypnosis beep the whole rest of the game.
