In what way does your game fit the theme?
Manolo rewinds in time to remember his past life.
Did you write most of the code yourself and made all the assets from scratch?
All code, artwork and music are done by scratch. Only sound effects and a couple images for the background aren't ours.

Interesting take of the theme and good use of game design. I like the concept of going back through somebodies life (obviously since my game was very similar in this regard). I also appreciated that the different characters had different abilities that they could use and that you have to manage what you need when. And as some other people have said the art style for this game is pretty sick.
I will say there were a couple of things that made me a little frustrated. For one the timer is pretty aggressive, especially when you have very limited clocks in the level. There were several times were I had to completely give up on a round because I was a second too slow. Another thing is that there is a very small area in which you can punch an enemy and not die. I spend a good while just trying to figure how close I have to stand to an enemy to kill it without dying. This, combined with an aggressive timer just lead to more frustration. Another small thing is that I sometimes confused the clocks I collected with the ones in the level. If you could better distinguish them more (even making it slightly transparent) that would be helpful.
Good luck!
Thanks for the review! Indeed everything you said are things we know we have to change, especially punching, which can be pretty frustrating. Still hope you enjoyed the game, thanks :)
I think the rewinding mechanic is done very well, each time period has its own obvious and unique mechanic. A way to speed up time if you're waiting to grow up would be very helpful. The art looks nice and fits in well with the backgrounds. The music does get a little repetitive, I think having a different song play for each level would be better, maybe use the other two songs that were intended for the other two time periods as songs for later levels? Overall, I really enjoyed it, great job!
Thanks for the feedback! We'll take your review into account. Probably will make the song have more parts in it, as the other two songs have the exact same melody just with other instruments and an octave lower. Still, something we keep in mind, thanks!
This game fits the theme of the jam like nothing else. It is a great idea and I love that the level is changing around the players age. The Movement however is a bit clunky.
Definitely something we have to improve, thanks for the feedback!
Perfect, I love this game. As a gamejam game, and as a game as well. I will remember it.
The aesthetic part is very polished, the gameplay is fun and innovative, the atmosphere is PERFECT.
Save the game was a good idea as there is two problems for which I saw the solution in the comments (That make me relaunch the game as well to finish it).
Two problems :
1) I didn't see anything about the baby power but in the comments (That saved me ).
2) The whole in the down part of the house was really tricky.
Here two questions :
1) Is there an easter egg in the end scene ?
2) Will you continue it ?
Thanks for this game.
Thank you so much for such good feedback!
About the baby, there's a screen in the tutorial which explains what it can do. Maybe you missed it or it may not be well explained, we'll look at it for an update!
Also one of the house levels is indeed to hard, will definitelly be changed in the near future.
Answering the questions, there's currently no easter egg in the end scene, but I write it down as a good idea to implement at some point. And we are definitely going to keep working on this game after the jam, improving all the details mentioned in comments and probably adding more to the game. Again, thank you so much, it means a lot!
One of the best games I managed to play in this Game Jam.
Nice job !!!
Thank you so much!!!
Check it out my game, your review is important.
For sure!
Best game i played so far. Everything fits together well.
Maybe the music style can swap too ^^
Thanks so much! I'm surprised you are the first one to suggest that idea.
I actually had three different clips which were the same music in three different styles, one for each age. At the end we decided to just leave this one (which would have been for the baby) because changing between them didn't feel clean, even though they were played at the point the previous one had stopped. It just wasn't as good as it sounded...
So yeah that was something we wanted to do but didn't at the end. Thanks again for the nice words :)
Liked the visuals and concept. I died on the dead plant but was ok when I was younger. Audio was fitting as well.
Could you please play and rate my game as well?
https://itch.io/jam/brackeys-4/rate/723414
You probably died at the plant because you didn't use the clocks. Will play your game tomorrow, thanks!
Please do! I hope you like it as much as I did yours!
This game is actually really good. In terms of theme and innovation, it hits the top spot for me. However, there were a few things that made the experience less enjoyable, including the constant music, some difficult pixel perfect jumps, and the fact that you had to wait a long time sometimes to grow to elderly form all the way from a baby. Other than that the game was really well designed and had some pretty unique and interesting mechanics.
Thanks so much for the feedback! The music might be extended at some point, but the other two things will be changed in the new update. Thanks again!
An amazing game that was able to fully use theme for the mechanics and story. The art was extremly well made and had a great sense of style. This is probably my favorite game of the jam so far!
Thank you so much! We really appreciate it :)
Very nice game. I felt like the background art and tiles clashed a bit. Also would have been nice to speed up time to I didn't have to wait to end the level with old manolo. Overall, touching game!
Thanks!! We will have it in mind in order to improve the game in further versions
This game was really something. The theme is implemented in a very original manner and it has some emotional story elements to it, that add context and make you feel for poor Manolo . The fact that the sprites changed for each stage of the life of Manolo was a nice touch. The only thing I'd improve is the jumping, that sometimes doesn't feel right, especially when touching a wall or on a slope. Also, I didn't manage to jump the 4 spikes in a row at the bottom of a level, I don't know if I'm missing something or the jump is just very very precise
Thanks for the feedback! That jump is just too hard, we'll take into account the jumping issues too :)
POOR MANALO!
There have been several other jam games I've tried that had the "different stages of life" as the central mechanic, but I felt this one particularly did a good job of capturing each stage.
The platforming, at times felt a bit imprecise which made the game difficult in spots, but I liked how each characters abilities *felt* unique.
Thanks for the feedback!
I liked knowing more of the story while playing the levels. I felt however that the control of the jump was sometimes quite unforgiving and since you can't really speed up time (or I didn't know you could) I had to wait a lot of times to grow older, which kinda reduced the tempo of the game.
The music was quite nice and made sense compared to the thematic, I'd say that game was quite enjoyable overall! I also have to emphasise how good the backgrounds look, I found a tad unfortunate that the foreground didn't look as good and often had the same tiles, side note though, the game was aweosme nonetheless!
Thanks so much for the feedback! The fast forward button is coming in the next update, so surely something that the game misses now.
Glad you enjoyed the music and the storyline! About the foreground, we only made three tilesets, one for the house, another for the park and a third one more urban-like. So yeah probably will need more of them if we end up doing more levels.
Thanks again for the comment, glad you liked the game :)
Wow, great game!!! Loved the use of the rewind mechanic, and how it affected both the player and the enviroment.
Something I would add is a button to go to the future faster, cause sometimes it felt like an eternity waiting for elder Manolo just to finish the stage lol.
Super fun experience. Congrats!!!
Thank you so much!
This was awesome! The creativity really shines through in this game, not a huge feature of the game, but one of my favorite parts was the pausing sound effect, it was just so satisfying! Now that you know you can finish a game in this time, you just need to polish up the visuals in my opinion. The pixel art is nice, but (no offense intended) the colors don't look good, try going to a website (like coolors) that will generate a color palette, and pick your colors off of a couple palettes. The only other thing was the coin sound effect, which I really didn't like, to me it sounded horrible, so I guess next time pick a better sound? https://www.bfxr.net/ bfxr is good for generating sounds, so I recommend trying that out. Great job with this!
Thank you so much! Will definitely take into account the recomendations, all feedback is very well welcomed! Glad you enjoyed the game (and the pause sound effect which is also my favourite sound) and thanks for the comment :)
:)
Great, I really liked that one. Alzheimer is a nice approach to the theme.
Manolo was a smoker when he was a teen, but we see that he quit when he gets old. He is a wise guy, cool detail :)
An amazing entry to the jam.
P.S: I stuck here, when I jump, I hit my head to the ceiling an I fall onto spikes. I tried over 10 times. If I had one more memento there, I would turn back to baby while I was air and glide, but there are no more mementos. So, is there a detail that I can't get?
Thanks for the feedback! Yeah you can see Manolo follows a healthier lifestyle now ;)
Also that part is just too difficult, there is no other way it can be done rather than timing the jump. Definitely something we'll change once the jam is over. Thanks again for the nice words!
Unfortunately I got stuck at level one because I couldn't glide far enough to get over the spikes.
But anyway Ilike the idea, it's implemented better here than in some other games I've seen. Because I got stuck I couldn't see where you got with it in further parts of the game, but some things you did have great potential, like the changing of the game elements and the specific abilities for every age.
So overall, besides some small bugs, it looks solid and it certainly feels good to play it, and the sprites and animations are very cute. Good job!
Thaanks!!! We really appreciate your comment! To beat that part of the level you just have to keep pressed the spacebar with the baby.
Nice mechanic!
I hope you can make the physics work a bit smoother, that would help the game feel better.
Thanks! Will work on that :)
Good approach to the theme. Got stuck on the level with the spikes at the bottom. Felt like the ceiling was too low to be able to jump. But the idea of rewinding through the ages is great. Well done!
Thanks! That's for sure a part which is currently too difficult. Will change it once the jam is over :)
