How does your game fit the theme?
Your battles are not fought with swords, but with words. Also, the monsters in this game are especially friendly. Well, most of them.

Did you use any assets?
The only assets I have used are ones I made before the gamejam started, on a game that I haven't ever published. (On the discord I think it was said it was fine so) The music was made by a friend who offered to make me some music to fit the game. EDIT: I also used the Platformer Plus Plugin.

I like the feel of this! Fun "combat".

Developer

I can only hope that I can make something fun, though I suppose there are a few things I could still improve. Glad you enjoyed it though!

Jam Judge

Fun RPG-like game with innovative Undertale-inspired combat mechanics for the Game Boy. The rhythm-gamer in me wanted it to be a music/rhythm-RPG at first glance. Maybe an idea for another game?

Thatd be interesting. Perhaps? But glad you liked it!

loved it, looking for more :)

Developer(+1)

Ill probably make a rerelease with some fixed bugs and updated stuff and whatnot, so I hopefully will! Maybe... not much besides a few more features though.

Submitted

Very good job! I like how you made the combat

Developer

thanks!

Really creative battle system. However the dodging controls feel a bit unresponsive to me. I think you can only evade to one of the four directions, when you are in the center. So if you want to go from left to right, you cannot just keep the right button pressed but you have to wait for the character to return to the center and then press right. I don't know if this is intended to make the fights more challenging, but I personally did not really like it this way as it left me often with "But I pressed that button!" moments. However I think this battle system has incredibly much potential and would love to see it perfected in the future 😊

Developer(+1)

I do agree that this does make the battles feel a little unresponsive, but the biggest reason this is an issue is because of the way I coded how the movement works. Perhaps Ill get to reworking it but that might take some time. Appreciate that you liked it though! Maybe in a newer version I could get this to work better.

Really enjoyed the mix between the action on dodging attacks and the peaceful "attacks". Plus it fits well the theme! I could not find out how to avoid the white thing that the second enemy I found throws at me and got stuck, but I will give it another try!

Developer(+1)

Yeah, had some people having that same issue! Apparently on web its visible but not as visible for the actual gameboy. Ill have that fixed soon, hopefully!

Tough i didn't come very far, this game is pretty much on theme and i like the graphics :)

Developer(+1)

it is a little tough, but I'm glad you enjoyed it! Hope it was fun.

Well I made it to the 3rd boss XD

Really cool fight/avoid mechanics! I also picked up on the undertale vibes! Fun characters and charming writing! I'll have to give this another go!

Developer(+1)

Aw man, thanks! I'm really happy that so many people enjoyed it as they did, and I think i might just make an updated version with some new stuff after the jams over. I wish you luck on the rest of the bosses though.

Sadly I keep dying at the first boss, so I'm taking a break for now. ;-) I like the game art style and unique atmosphere. Also, like others mentioned: interesting battle system! Music was good too.

Developer

Thats ok, it does that a little bit of practice but I'm sure you can beat it. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on it though!

I really like your sprites, and the horrific theme of your game, but it's really too talkative for me (and being French, I don't understand English very well...). There are also some small bugs in the text display when playing on the original Game Boy DMG (may be corrected in your update, as you mention on your page). But a good project overall, bravo :)

Developer(+1)

aw man, thanks! I think the text doesn't work properly since apparently its 4 lines and that apparently doesnt work on dmg? Still, I hope you liked the game. It is a little dialogue heavy, but i think the dialogue is hopefully pretty solid. Maybe I need a french version someday!

This was fun and the combat system was very unique.

Developer

thanks!

Really liked the fighting. At first i thought it could be a little bit boring, but with the different attacks it was a challenge :D

Developer

it definitely becomes a challange quick, some people said I need to nerf some stuff which is pretty fair. Hope you enjoyed it all though!

reminds me a little bit of Undertale, I really love the artstyle and feels like you really put some passion behind it

Developer(+1)

I tried to put as much as I could behind making this, and I really appreciate you noticing ^_^ it is definitely very inspired by those games.

This game was really fun, gameplay remember timing hero and mega man battle network, simple graphics but with captivating design, and nice music.

I had problems related to crash during retry in battles, the screen was white and sound continued, but overall it's a good game.

Developer(+1)

I'm glad you liked it! Im not sure exactly how to fix the issues related to the crashing in retry and whatnot, I suppose that's going to need a little more work in the bug fixing area, but I'm really glad people enjoyed it a lot.

Im glad you enjoyed it! Mainly the idea was something I had in my backlog of ideas for a while now. Also, how I made the consistent holding thing is I made it first set a value to true, then made a while loop, where inside the while loop If Gamepad direction held, idle, else set a value to false, thus breaking the loop. Hope this helps! I wasn't able to attach an image since this comment doesn't seem to let me. If you have any other questions let me know.

I thought this was a novel and cute entry! I don't know if I just suck at this game, but the difficulty curve from the first boss to the second kind of threw me, but I appreciated the retry option. Some of the collisions with the trees and objects were a bit wonky, and speaking to NPCs was a bit difficult at times like you mentioned, but the charm more than made up for it as I played. I really enjoyed the sense of character and personality you gave the characters in the game, and managed to make something novel with it. Really good job for a first time attempt at a full game. I suspect you'll go places if you keep up the good work. Congrats!

Developer(+1)

Thanks! I did try and nerf the curve towards the second boss a little, but it is very evident there is a big jump. Super glad you tried my game out!
