Thanks a lot. It is very nice to see somebody else play, their reactions to the game, and how the game actually is on other people computers.

Regarding your stategy: I think it is safe if you just want to reach the bosses. However, without power-ups these bosses can be quite difficult (and long) to beat.

Regarding moonshot vs. normal shot: the moonshot is better for bosses as it can multiple hit them, while the normal shot is better for normal enemies (in particular if you improve it with better shot bonuses, as it will then shoot in multiple directions, and thus almost cover the full height of the screen).

Regarding fullscreen: would have been nice, but I think it is not provided out of the box in the library I use, and I did not want to try it for the first time in such a short amount of time. I will consider it for other games in the futur though.

Just one question: I heard that you were a bit anxious to get a .exe file for Windows. Not being a Windows user myself I do not know what are the other options to provide a downloadable program. What would you have expected? (I would be happy to make the game accessible in a better way if it is feasible.)

Anyway, thanks again for playing and for your live feedback.

At the beginning I was like "this is easy", but 5 minutes after I was avoiding bullets coming from all directions! :-D

Nice shoot'em up game :-)

Add a few more particle effects for explosions, a bit of spaceship steering animation and it's going to be a lot of fun!

Developer(+1)

Thanks for your comments!

You are indeed completely right about the particle effect, it would have been nice to have it. But, the library I use is too low level for including that, and I did not have enough time to implement it from scratch (was definitely on my todo list though).

Good shot'em up, nice mechanic to accumulate bonus for a better reward. I find collisions too unforgiving, and that's a bit bad for a bullet hell, but everything looks polished. Congrats for a great game.

Developer(+1)

Thanks for your comments!

The decisions on collisions were difficult to make. I decided to go with the "old school" version where (almost) the full ship can collide with bullets, but indeed it could have been made more permissive. I may have changed that with more time for testing.

reminded me of an old game

Developer

This is very possible as the mechanics are very close to those of Gradius (and, thus, Parodius).

This is a good game, had fun playing it :)
The difficulty curve is really nice! The visuals are impressive.
Well done :D

Really Nice, Backgrounds and Enemies are good. A little bit of variation in attacks and Explosions could have made the trick. Nice try.

Excellent game! The graphics are just soooo good, especially the parallax background and different bosses, they really helped bring this game to life. Gameplay was solid and consistent and the power up system was a nice addition.

Thanks a lot! We appreciate your comments.

Wow, great game guys!

Your graphics are some of my favorite in the jam so far :)

Game also played very smoothly and I didn't come across any bugs.

Nice Job!

Thanks a lot for your comments. We appreciate!

Wow! I’ve just noticed that I spent quite some time to beat your game!

I truly enjoyed it, the power up system allows you to plan the gun strategy: normal VS moon shot and the new option helpers that are super handy specially for the final boss.

I have just a couple of comments/questions:

  • the first one is about the items spawning, I got very few items during some plays that made me die quickly when I reached the end of the stage. How does the randomness of the items of your game work?

  • I got confused about the background and the bullets in the second level (the red sky and yellow stars), sometimes it was difficult to spot properly them.

Definitely a great shoot’em up, beautiful art, epic music with some Evangelion kind of vibe.

Really well done!

PS: I’ve attached the proof that I made it through and my score. I invite you to beat my game too, way easier than yours but also can be a bit challenging.

Developer(+1)

Thanks a lot for your comments, and congratulations for making it to the end of the game! Just for curiosity, do you have an idea of how long you tried? (I finished it myself but I had many training when I designed the bosses and the levels, plus I know what exactly are the patterns of the bosses… so it is difficult to evaluate the time needed to beat it for a normal player)

For the power-ups spawning, each enemy has a probability to spawn a power-up (this probability depends of the enemy type). I tried to define these probabilities so that one always gets enough power-ups but not too much. However, in the end, I think that it would have been better to just hardcode which enemy spawns a power-up and which does not.

I agree with you for the background of the second level.

Submitted(+1)

I don’t know exactly, probably around 2 hours in total. Yesterday I played roughly 45 minutes and today the rest. I reached the second level quite easily but some way or another always got hit, lose the power-ups and get too weak for the bosses. Today I gave it another try and planned better the power-ups, reaching the final boss of the second level full equipped with the normal shot (I made a screenshot) and was easy enough, but the journey to get there with that was quite challenging.

Thank you for the explanation about the spawning, I really appreciated :)

Really nice background graphics, and its fun to play! Reminds me of the cuphead plane battles. Awesome job!

pretty cool game, simple mechanic yet fully completed and fun! I'm curious what is the moonshot for? is that better than better shot? It seems replacing the better shot so not sure which one should I upgrade.

Love the art and the red moon btw, amazing scene.

Developer(+1)

Thanks for your comment.

The moonshot is a different shot: it will not be removed from screen when killing an enemy, meaning that with one shot you can kill several enemies. As a consequence it is much better against bosses as one shot can hurt them multiple times (but, I think, it is less efficient against normal enemies, so you have to do a choice between efficiency against bosses and efficiency against normal enemies).

Submitted(+1)

Nice visuals! The gameplay mechanic was simple and kept me coming back after I died to try again :)

The audio didn't play for me for some reason and the powerups didn't work either (I'm using Chrome on a Macbook Air)

Would be nice if after you destroy the boss all his bullets also disappear, I took a hit from one of the boss bullets after I had killed him. The enemies are also a little bit hard to see sometimes especially the smaller ones when the screen is full of bullets. Maybe they can be more high contrast, or have some sort of visual indicator to help them stand out (outline maybe).

Fun game overall, I enjoyed it!

Developer

Thanks for your kind comments.

As indicated on the page of the game, I shut down the audio for the web version. If you want the audio you need to download a desktop version (or look at the full playthrough on youtube).

Regarding the bonuses, did you get that you need to catch a power up and then use ctrl on your keyboard to validate this bonus? If so, please let me know as I would be interested to know if there is something not correct on some browsers.

Regarding the bosses, their bullets disappear when you beat them. I am assuming that you beat the first mid-boss (and indeed, mid-bosses bullets do not disappear).

Submitted(+1)

Cool game! It would have been nice to see some UI icons for the “Speed Up” “moonshot” etc… and tbh I might have skipped the instructions accidentally so didn’t know how to use it haha.

I died shortly after the first boss, I felt as thought it might have been a little more interesting if the boss had different phases of shooting at different health values? I just used the same strat through the boss fight.

Developer(+1)

Thanks for your comment!

I don't get your comment on the UI icons. You have UI on the bottom for that. And when a bonus that you want is selected on the UI you should press ctrl to actually get this bonus (this is a Gradius-like game).

Regarding the bosses, they actually have phases (end of level 1 has 2 phases and end of level 2 has 3 phases), what you met is a mid-boss (which should be fast to beat if you use the bonus).

Submitted(+1)

RE the ui – yeah! I meant some UI icons instead of plain text

Developer

Oh, I get it. It would have been really nice, I totally agree with you. But we feared that it would be difficult to get something clear enough for the player (in particular without the ability to have other testers than us).

Submitted(+1)

I really like the back ground!

it was fun!

Maybe I wish the boss had several phases

Developer

Thanks a lot!

Regarding the boss: the first one has no phases, but the second one has 2 and the last one 3. (You can see it in the full playthrough video available on the game page if you wish.)
