Fun game that totally nailed the cliché. The farthest I got was about 23%, but the controls didn't feel very accurate and having that combined with the flashing made me a little dizzy. I think with some adjustments to the controls and the collision detection this game would be perfect. Great work!
This is a really cool concept! A very solid take on the "blind as a bat" cliché that really taps in to my constant desire to play Flappy Bird style games. There is a surprising depth to it - you start to realise details like how the fireflies(?) act as signals to where you should be going/which way the camera would be bending.
My only gripe, like others, is that collisions often felt far too punishing, and it wasn't too clearly communicated why you were colliding with things that, from the player's perspective, seemed like they should have been further away.
Outside of that, a fantastically original take and a solid game overall. I managed to get to 79%!
Thanks! Wow 79%, that's impressive! I'm glad you noticed the fireflies (I actually just meant them to be regular flies but because they were buzzing they'd be giving off noise which would make them light up, but when I designed their movement I found they did remind me of fireflies), their purpose is exactly that - to show the player where the camera was going to be going. And yes, I agree about the collision issue - the player's collision box definitely should have been smaller, and as for the depth perception - that I haven't figured out yet with the echo location shader.
I don't envy being in your shoes - I can't even begin to think about how I would approach this. My experience with shaders is extremely limited - I'll defo be taking a peek at how you've handled the echo locations!
I made a little devlog here that explains how I made it as well:
This is great, thanks for linking this, just watching through it now. I'm kind of glad you decided against a china shop idea - it would have undoubtedly smashed ours out of the water!
Fun game, I really liked the sonar effect! The best I've managed to get so far is around 50%, but I'm pretty determined to give it another go at some point to see if I can make it to the end. The collision boundaries feel a little unforgiving, but no real complaints besides that :)
Thanks for the feedback! I definitely agree the collision boundaries could be improved and 50% is really good :)
As others mentioned, I sometimes had trouble understanding why I lost because of the angle, but I still really enjoyed it!
GG
I found the concept really original ! On my part, I had a hard evaluating when I was about to impact on an obstacle. The gameplay was smooth and hard!
GG and keep going !
Frustrating but fun. I only got to 29% but I love the concept.
Cool visuals, but I couldn't get past 13% haha
Nice idea, not easy first but after a time really cool !
Very cool, it's like a 3D Flappy Bird if the bird was blind. Didn't make it to the end of the cave, but I hope there's something cool there for those who make it!
Great concept and really fun game to play.
Good job
Love it! The effects are brilliant at conveying a "blindness". I had a lot of troubles figuring out the depth, which really added to the experience!
Really great interpretation of the theme into gameplay! Love the visuals of the echolocation and the simplistic sound design of it works well. Agree with the forced camera movement feedback - makes it a bit hard to react to when reaching new areas, giving more of a feeling of relying on memory of what part of the screen you have to move to in each section (although this could have been intentional). Great job and execution regardless!
What makes me enjoy this game is the theme and the concept. A little bit more touch to the sound and graphic, this becomes a bomb.
Thanks!
A fresh spin on an old idea. The 3rd dimension really adds a lot of fun to the flappy bird gameplay core. Didn't get very far because I suck at flappy bird but that didn't stop me from enjoying the game! Nicely done!
Thanks for playing!
Great work on this! Lots of fun and very challenging, I like your way of visualizing a bats echolocation.
Thanks!
Really love the theme on this - the audio and visuals work really well to bring the whole thing together. Awesome stuff! My only gripe is how the changing camera angle makes the already challenging game a bit too hard.
Thanks for the feedback!
really liked the black and white colors(I think it fits well with the bat theme)
I think the gameplay has a lot of potential, but it needs more polish .
also the controls are kinda unforgiving ,but I actually think I like it more that way! ,
Thanks!
Nicely done. Congrats on finishing your game!
Your premise, despite being "3D flappy bird" was really intriguing and a neat take on the theme. The presentation is pretty cool, too. The little chittering echo and minimal graphics are a nice combination. Unfortunately, the gameplay just didn't click for me. I know flappy bird is notorious for it's difficulty, but the 3D element here made this feel almost impossible. In combination with the intentionally obscured walls, I couldn't make it past 14%, and even that was about 1 in 4 runs. I didn't even make it past the first obstacle until my 4th or 5th try because it feels like there's no time to get used to the controls. I think in this case - your use of theme is so strong that you could have dialed back on adhering to it in service of gameplay and you'd still high score for theme. Giving players that chance to feel like they can do it is really important.
Anyway, you should be super proud. This can't have been easy to make solo and it turned out to be a great little project. I just wish I could have seen more of it!
Keep making games!
PS - When I read your game description, I did a wild double-take:
"I originally was going to make a game that contained a bunch of mini games that each had their own cliché [...]"
That's what we ended up with!
Thanks a lot! Yeah I do regret leaving in that first obstacle - having played the game so many times its easy to me now it was something I overlooked.
Really nice concept.
Pros: As mentioned, the concept and theme. The (lighting? Is it lighting if its echo location?) effect used to represent the echo location looked really nice. The sound effect of the bat clicking, and then echoing throughout the cave is really cool.
Cons: The controls and collision boxes on the cave seem very unforgiving. It felt like I was dying without touching the obstacles at some points. This coupled with the controls being quite floaty made it very hard to play.
Overall, I think it needs quite a bit of tweaking of collision boxes, and maybe tighten up the controls. You got the aesthetic and mood bang on though. Good Job!
Thanks!
This concept is so cool!
Thanks!
