A deck-building poker game? Absolutely great idea for this game jam and a fantastic use of the theme, brilliant game!

Great twist to an already established game. I had an enjoyable time playing it.

The ample sound effect really made every move responsive and satisfying. Having the music change when entering the VIP room is also a great touch and sets the tone of the incoming boss fight. Being able to see what cards are in the deck at any time is a very useful feature. The wacky cards made it more interesting and made replaying the game feel less repetitive. Might be just a coincidence, but if you made the winning particle effect reflect on the suits of my hand, that's really cool.

Other than that the art, I can't think of anything else that I can criticize on. Good job on the game!

You noticed the winning suits! Thanks so much for playing!

Fantastic game.

My first run through I didn't read the instructions, so I had a hard time.

After reading the instructions it went much better.

I love your idea for this deck-building poker game.

Great execution too!

It is great i learnt how to play it in 30 seconds

Some crazy cards in that pack.

Took some getting used to but after that this was really fun to play with !
I guess the deck is random so it depends a lot on what your deck is and what you need to play (ie cards you have multiples of, duh ;P)
Only thing I didn't like/understood was not being able to draw more cards when the opponent is all-in, I was forced to use my initial draw.

Besides that I also had the bug where the tables were empty but VIP was not enabled. I had 222 chips if that helps.

Well done on the jam !

Developer

I've done a bugfix on the issue you found! Thanks for your help.

I love me some poker, and so I sat down thinking "this is going to be a piece of cake." Then I saw the 20 of clubs and it changed to "oh shit, I've got some learning to do." But after a slight learning curve, played it and loved it. Also loved the jazzy background and the really funny names! Haha.

I do think I ran into a bug  - and as I read the comments I think someone else did as well - of having empty tables and not being able to get to the VIP room. I did take a screenshot too.

Either way, I loved it. Keep up the good work!

Developer

Thanks, yep that's definitely not meant to happen! I'll get right on fixing that. Glad you enjoyed it regardless of the progress halting bug.

Developer

Thanks for taking the screenshot! With your help I tracked down the bug, and it should be fixed now. If you still want to see what's behind the VIP door give it another go!

You know, I work in a casino right now and I actually like this game. The deck building lets you set up really silly odds like 1/3 of the deck being a flush with itself and having multiple chances at quads, but just being able to set up pairs efficiently is good enough to win. I got through on my 3rd try.

Developer

Thanks, for playing, glad you enjoyed it. hope it didn't feel too much like work!

A very cool game! I played probably... 5 rounds and managed to beat it finally. Can't say I've ever played a deck-building poker game before. I didn't expect to like it much going into it, but it definitely hooked me once I got a feel for how it works.

One thing I'd like to see is some sort of animation (or something) to know when you're playing through your deck again, and when you're playing through the last few cards of your deck. I wasn't able to find much use for the suit-only cards, as pairs seemed much MUCH more reliable than trying to go for flushes. Solid game here that I could definitely see becoming a full game of some sort. Well done.

Developer

Thank you so much for playing! I'm glad you enjoyed it, and congratulations on beating the boss!

A very engaging concept, and really well executed with very slick animations. I initially thought the blank cards was the game not properly loading, but once I read in the comments that that was intentional I went back to the game and did a lot better.

Developer

Thanks for playing, I'm glad you enjoyed it! I think when it's over I will put something like a tooltip with the name of the card so that it's a little more obvious that they are intentionally blank. I hadn't really thought about it before, but I guess especially in game jams people are primed to expect a bug or two so it has to be really obvious what is intentional.

Really well done and polished game. Great work!

This was actually super chill and relaxing to play. I really like the fresh twist on the formula with the extra cards and the deckbuilding aspect. I was able to win a bunch of times after building a deck with five 5's and four 9's. But then someone with a deck of mostly diamonds wrecked me.
Really well made game. My one nitpick is that it would be fun to also have a special situation in which you could also get rid of cards. Aside from that though, no complaints, great entry!

Developer

Card removal was unfortunately left on the todo list for time reasons. I'll definitely add it when the judgement period is over. Thanks for your kind comments, I'm glad you enjoyed the game!

Super fun twist on a deckbuilder. I think I got three of the same cards (a 2), and it didn’t count as such, because I got a high card instead. But otherwise fun!

You should check our deckbuilding game too :)

The deck building makes it more interesting than I thought at first, haha. I have devastated every table with my "four 10" deck and now nobody wants to play against me, the tables are all empty... Anyway, I enjoyed a lot the experience, good sound, functional graphics, and a nice twist to poker. Good job!

Developer (1 edit)

that sounds like it could be a bug, but also could be the boss - the VIP door is meant to open after you've done a few tables! did you happen to take a screenshot? 😅

Submitted(+1)

The tables were empty so I expected the VIP door to open. Even clicked on it, but nothing happened. Have I scared the boss? 😅 Will play again later and see if I can reproduce the bug.

Developer

Thanks! I have an idea of what might be causing it, any fix would have to wait though

Nice one! Fun to see traditional cards used in an untraditional way :)

Really liked the smooth animations!

Nice job turning poker into TCG.
On my second try got lucky with starting with 4 kings and 3  Aces let me win somewhat easy. And got even more kings and Aces after wining :D

Great animations and the music fits perfectly. The mechanics are interesting, I loved the mix of poker + deckbuilding, but maybe you went slightly overboard with the quantity of cards available, as the AI most often ended up with just a highest card (or maybe I'm completely wrong :D).

Solid game, great job!

The audio and the visuals are great and create a really nice vibe. The gameplay was familiar but with an interesting twist that I enjoyed. However when I played there were a few cards in my deck that were either completely blank, or mostly blank. So I was unable to tell what they were.

Developer(+1)

the blank cards are just that - blank! No suit for flushes and no numeral for pairs or straights. If I develop this game further I'll do a better job of explaining the non standard cards.

Submitted

Ah I see ok creative idea! I feel like they might benefit from an extra symbol or something to show their specialty.

OMG, I think you did a great job on the Audio part and the Graphics part

Congrats on finishing your game!

I think the biggest thing this game has going for it is the extreme ease of playability. The card playing is snappy and intuitive. Rounds are short and to the point. Card deals and animations are quick without being unreadable. All this helps the player stay engaged and has a nice push and will with little gameplay loops. Super well designed!

The un-suited and un-numbered cards took me a little bit of getting used to, especially number cards over 10 still being less valuable than face cards.

As engaging as the gameplay is, I think it still has room for iteration. There are a few 'feels-bad' moments when the opponent rushes you or you just can't draw anything. That's the nature of poker & traditional card games, but we're in video game land. You're already deviating from a standard 52 card deck, so it would be fun to lean into that a bit more. Can you design something like... pay the blind again to draw a new hand once per table? Some other QoL features would be nice, too. Like an undo feature to pull a card back, or a "play all" button to just put your hand on the table.

Overall, very well made. I hope you're happy with your game. Keep making games!

Developer(+1)

Wow, thanks for the detailed feedback! Those QoL improvements will definitely be on my list once the jam is over. My intention with this game was to deviate further from the standard deck with things like "on play" effects and additional suits, but when the time came I decided to focus on the animation and feel over additional features. I'm pleased you noticed!
