Cool idea and take on tetris. I really struggled with understanding what I was supposed to do even after reading through the page a couple of times and seeing the in-game tutorial. Eventually I lost for not collecting a bonus block but I really couldn't have told you when/if I missed one. I also found that the blocks fell way too fast for a typical tetris-style game, but once I realized I didn't need to line up blocks perfectly, that was less of a problem. All around I feel like you've got a good idea here, it just needs a little more polish on the instructions and some of the mechanics. But overall it was a neat game to play and a great take on the theme too.

Thanks for the feedback! We had a lot of back and forth on the bonus blocks so it works differently in the 2 modes. Initially we were planning to make it line up more like Tetris, so that may have also added to the confusion. It seems like the block placement should somehow affect gameplay... but not quite sure how to bring it in other than using it to sort by size maybe...

We definitely wanted to do a tutorial mode to introduce the mechanics better and a leaderboard and all that but you know how it goes!

Really neat concept for scaling the blocks and I also enjoyed the music selection and graphics. The blocks dropped a little fast for my liking but I am also bad at Tetris so that tracks. Sometimes blocks would clear when it didn't look like they where lined up but other that that great work!

Cool idea adapting tetris to the theme! Congrats

Developer

Thanks! It was to work out, but we manage to get it done by the deadline somehow!

Awesome take on tetris. The 3D view did make it a tad difficult as every box on the sides would have a weird perspective.

Texture on the background could use a little improvement, they were a bit blurry and had some weird opacity masks but they looked fine on the cubes.

Music and sound effects were pretty good too

Developer(+1)

Thanks! Yes... we made a last minute decision to re-tile the "quest mode" and some of them were ok at 512x512 but on screen they definitely can be difficult to separate out.

It was surprising how much time it took for sound effects. Glad you liked them :-D

Nice game and nice idea!
I feel some of the sound effects played louder than needed when I match boxes. Could be because same sound was triggered twice maybe. This goes against otherwise relaxing vibe of the game.

Moving boxes with mouse seems fine for  the most part but on a long distance dragging it seems to go off the cursor.

Developer

The sound levels were definitely a challenge and part of the tuning that could definitely used more cycles. Thanks for the feedback (get it? sound effects, feedback πŸ˜…)

The mechanic for the box moving seems to have been the most confusing aspect. You can really click and drag anywhere, the effect is based on the direction from wherever you click. In retrospect a visual clue would have been helpful.

Really cool game, well done! I hope you continue working on this even after the jam closes, it’s not perfect but I think it has a ton of potential with more polish and detail work.

Developer

Thanks! Probably like most, it was a struggle to stop adding features and focus on play testing. Definitely planning to keep working on it. There are already a couple of bug fixes in github for "oh, dang that wasn't working?" type issues πŸ˜…

This prototype could potentially become the next popular puzzle game if you invest more time into it, the concept is simple yet original, good idea πŸ˜€

The game lacks a little bit of polish in my opinion. It feels a little slow and clumsy to play, and sometimes the controls were playing against me. I think that you should limit the variety of boxes to just 4 or 5, I spent a long time waiting for a matching box to fall while playing. I also think that matching boxes should automatically merge if they are touching each other and they are in the same size, it would make the game feel more dynamic.

Keep working on it guys, this game has potential, now you have to exploit it even more! 😊

Developer

Thanks ! Glad you liked it πŸ˜€

The game modes and levels are configurable πŸ› οΈ and we may have run afoul of making it too difficult to move things from having played it so much and not want it to be too easy. We talked about having it be smarter about block selection but just didn't get around to it before the deadline.

Hit a bit of project fatigue πŸ˜΅β€πŸ’«, but definitely planning on continuing it πŸ’ͺ

Fun game and well executed! It was relaxing to play and the music and graphics were perfectly matched in my opinion. It took me a second to get used to the controls but I got the hang of it after one level I think. Nice work!

Developer

Glad you got the hang of the controls. It definitely seems to have been a bit more confusing than expected. Some visual cues would have helped.

Thanks!

Simple yet fun! However, as other users mentioned, it took me a while to get used to the controls (I mostly used the mouse). After a few tries, it was clear.

But I don't know if it was a bug or not. I couldn't drag the "special" boxes to the side area... they would always fall faster than my dragging, making it quite hard to place them there.

Good job!

Developer

It's definitely proving a challenging mechanic! It's not so much clicking and dragging the boxes as tossing them around by frantically clicking anywhere on the screen then dragging and quickly releasing the mouse to fling them around.

Lol, it sounds a little crazyπŸ€ͺ but with some practice you can actually throw them up pretty high.

Thanks for taking the time to check it out and the great feedback πŸ™Œ

Quite an original game and it's cool that I could play it on the Mac. It did take some time to get to learn the gameplay though. From afar it may look like playing Mahjong due to the detailed blocks. XD Loved the music, not sure if it was composed for the game or not, but it really adds something to the game.

In overall, very well done!

Developer

Thanks! Really glad you liked it! There's definitely a learning curve! Its funny the logo looks like Mahjong  πŸ˜… May need a redesign

The music is all from pixabay which has a lot of really amazing content. Really need to clean it up, but here is a list of assets for sound and music: https://github.com/loose-bit-labs/scaletris/blob/main/CREDITS.md

Fun game. Nice simple concept. Well executed. I wasn't sure what to do with a few blocks that wouldn't match (beakers in the lab, and a bag on the quest level?)  I guess they were intended as blockers to make the game harder? Or maybe I'm missing something.

Developer

Oh, right, yeah! Those are the bonus blocks! You have to deposit them in the little area on the side of the screen to unlock a bonus level
