Playing through thoughts as I progress

Holy crap that ghost attacking me on the 1st level jumpscare really got me, was not expecting that lol, already the sound design here is pretty great.

When I craft with 9 raw gems unlike most other recipes I can put other things in and still see the finished product, when I craft with that stuff in I end up losing all of those materials. This seems to be the case for recipes like the shortsword as well, it should probably just remove stuff not actually used in the crafting.

I managed to craft both the longsword and the pick scythe which is necessary to beat the game, I tried mining some of the 3rd level stuff but a guard came out and killed me because I was too slow.

I did this a couple more times re-grinding through the same stuff which made me hate the menu system and the amount of spam clicking I had to do (though as a coder myself I can definitely appreciate the work that probably went into it) before I realized I was moving slow because I was trying to use the longsword.

This is basically when I realized the longsword is absolutely worthless, +1 damage for basically being required to swap weapons to use it so you can move faster is not a trade off that was worth it for me, so I pretty much stuck to the shortsword since you move incredibly fast.

At this point I just wanted to see the final boss at least one time so I knew what I was going into at least, so I went in with a shortsword and pick scythe in a run just to see what was up with it, with the power of my insane speed with the shortsword I was able to kite around all the enemies and kill the boss without taking a single hit actually. I wasn't aware I was being timed but my time was 282.94 seconds.

Conclusion

Overall a pretty short and interesting game, judging by the comments I may have been the only one here to actually beat it?

Exploring the crafting reminded me a bit of when I was first starting out in minecraft as a kid and was too ignorant to use a wiki or something so I pretty much relied on guesswork and what my brother could figure out as well. I would have had a lot more fun exploring it if I didn't have to destroy my index finger clicking so much to do it though.

It was fun figuring stuff out blind though and it definitely has a unique style for what it is, I may come back at some point to explore some of the other recipes and see what I missed, there's gotta be a healing item I didn't discover with those flowers...

Edit: For the hell of it I ran a speedrun with my method since it seemed pretty fast and managed to beat the game in 124.02 seconds, while doing this I noticed a bug where if you have your inventory open while going through a door it moves the inventory to the point where you can't use it but not actually off your screen.

This is quite a fun experience. I enjoy mining games in general and find them very satisfying. I loved the pixel artstyle of each of the items and found all the sound effects amusing. Also trying to figure out what items are needed for upgrades was fun. I didn't have problems with the combat, but I did find that ifyou hit the ghosts just when they appear they die in one hit, regardless of what weapon I used.

I did find a bug though where everytime I crafted the advanced gem, it would spawn in my inventory with 0 quantity, so I couldn't actually use it :(. It would disappear the moment I would click on it, so I could not really craft anything golden and I couldn't fight the final boss. I tried twice to craft the advanced gem (using 9 blue gems) and it bugged out both times.

Also, being able to drag items around in the inventory and organize them would be a really big improvement.

Overall, quite fun concept! Keep up the good work

Thank you for the in depth review! Many of the bugs you mentioned have been fixed in the newer version that I haven't uploaded yet, but that enhanced gem one is new, thanks for finding it.

Fun and challenging game. This style of game is always brutal, so I kind of expected that, but I still wish the fighting difficulty started a bit lower so that I could get used to the fighting experience before dying over and over. I would have played for longer if it had been a bit easier to start. Even with that though, I thought the game was fun. I like the concept and the simple art style. Sound effects were nice. It would be awesome to get some basic background music in there too.

Really fun like a Minecraft demake or something. I love the concept and there is some cool ideas here. The pixel art is simple and lovely which I appreciate and the mining and experimenting are fun. I agree with everyone else that being able to hold to mind would be a huge QoL up grade. Also I got to the tent section and got instagibbed by a soldier. It might be cool to have a potion or some armor or something otherwise it's a really brutal game especially since you have to go back to the beginning if you die (resetting like 5-10 minutes of progress), I like the little swing animation and the cost benefit around mining the high risk ores is cool. I think this is a really well developed game with a good concept and I'd totally have played it through to the end if the QoL and risk-reward were a little more balanced. Very enjoyable and I'm bummed I didn't get to face down the eldritch horror.

I agree with everything Roaming Maelstrom said. Another thing that may be a bug, when I mined one of the blocks that spawned enemies, I immediately died before I could move. Great job overall, I'm excited to play again with these improvements!

That does sound like a bug, I'll see what might be causing that. Sounds like a very frustrating way to go out

Lots of potential in your submission. I liked looking around the world and seeing what recipes their were to craft.

Pixel art quality is top notch. It was very clear to see what each item in the game was based on its sprite. Final boss is very distinct (I remember you posting it in the discord and thought it looked interesting then).

I think you did well with the sound design. The mining/impact sounds are very satisfying and add to the Oomph feeling of mining things.

For improvements, the gameplay needs work. I feel like with mining/crafting type games it's quite hard to get right. The top three things I would suggest are:

  • Adding some drag-drop functionality to the menu. This would include switching hotbar items and dragging into the crafting menu.
  • Let the player hold down the LMB to mine, rather than having to mash click so much.
  • Add some more feedback effects for when you hit an enemy/are hit. It felt like I died very suddenly to a Ghost, and I had trouble working out if I was hitting it or not.

Overall, solid idea and aesthetic, just needs the gameplay refining. Good job!

Thank you for the in depth review and suggestions! I will look into implementing these suggestions once the voting period is up as I do not think I am allowed to before then.

Fun game, the mining sounds sound good.

I liked the simplicity of the game, but I find it unforgiving that you can’t respawn when you die. I had mined quite a lot and was frustrated when I lost everything. the ghosts are quite aggressive :-) well done!

If you want further develop the game, you should probably focus on respawns and maybe some recipe book.

Developer

Thanks for the review! The next step in the games development will be a recipe book and a proper guide/tutorial.

How come there are no comments? I think this game may be a hidden gem. Pun intended. I like it. A couple suggestions: allow dragging stuff in the inventory and maybe put a note about the shift click there because I didn’t read the instructions. And maybe recipes could be shown in game as you discover them (again, I didn’t read the instructions). In the second level there was a tile that reappeared a couple times, not sure if it was intentional. Also, the ghosts appeared and I died, I don’t even know if I was able to fight them but they were too fast.

Developer

Thanks for the huge review! I'll try to implement some of your suggestions to improve the playability of the game. You can kill the ghosts, they can be a bit tricky to deal with sometimes.
