This is amazing! If I keep playing much longer I'll give myself carpal tunnel lol

Developer

Perhaps Sisyphus is not the only one condemned to damnation in this game ...

PS:

He should have used an escalator maybe.

Developer (1 edit)

thanks for playing! yeah maybe Sisyphus would have developed easier ways for him to lift the boulder to a certain height as the science and technology march in modern days. fun to think about.

"One must imagine Sisyphus happy"

the gameplay  is humdrum and repetitive but fits your idea really well, so that's a good point! i love the simple yet working art, the sound is cool too. a proof that simple can be good!

Developer (1 edit)

Thanks for playing! Yeah I've always been a big fan of minimalism. So glad to hear that you think certain elements work just fine. Maybe gameplay can be improved to be of more fun tho..I remember you from the mosquito game of LD52. Loved it a lot :)

Very simple game, which is cool. Context is interesting as well. Gameplay could be more interesting though.

Developer

Thanks for playing! I kinda wanna keep the feeling of dullness and futility from the original Sisyphus' story. Maybe there's a smarter way in game design to convey this idea and make the game fun to play at the same time..It's interesting to think about it already. Updates might be coming post jam!

I love it so much! The waiting Sisyphus push for the boulder to reach the top is hilarious, as if saying, "Phew, I'm awesome!" Even funnier is pressing X to make the boulder roll again, and Sisyphus initially maintains the previous action, then runs down in panic while raising his hands! Hahaha!

Also, the score and difficulty are directly proportional. The boulder is easy to roll down at the bottom, but at the top, you need to hit the keyboard vigorously, and the score is higher as well! I really love this game!

Glad you like it! When designing those tiny details I was picturing classic comedy cartoons like Tom&Jerry in my mind. It feels good the idea of it can be conveyed successfully even though the pixel art is kinda abstract. And I was a little worried about the difficulty rise is too obscure to be noticed. Good to know they work fine. Thanks for playing.

I found it quite hard, but I love how creative the idea is, I never would've thought to make the player a boulder!

thanks!

Really cool idea but my hand started to hurt! I guess we still are playing a version of Sisyphus after all

Developer(+1)

Thanks for playing and sorry about ur hand. Yeah Sisyphus and the boulder are kinda like 2 sides of 1 coin.

Really simple twist on a classic itch.io game! Nice job!

Developer

Thanks man! May I ask which game are you referring to? Is it pippin barr's Let’s Play: Ancient Greek Punishment?

Submitted(+1)

Oh nah it's Sisyphus by George Prosser: https://gprosser.itch.io/sisyphus

Very neat! This got at my soft spot for Pico-8 games, but it felt like a simple idea executed really well. The aural & visual feedback from rapid tapping was satisfying & also ensured the player was looking in the right spot to see the effect of their actions on Sisyphus. The expanding glow on the boulder with faster tapping feels almost like a diegetic interface element; like this mystical glow engulfing the boulder from the inside to shove it down the hill. Great work!

Thank you for your insightful review! It's both inspiring and encouaging.

I really enjoyed the execution of this game, and never thought i would play as a boulder. I love rapid tapping games. Also, the graphic style was very clean and minimalistic.

Developer

thanks for playing! we have similar tastes!

This game should seriously have its place in the Pompidou museum

Developer

The idea is very funny, you feel the power of make someone suffer XD the aesthetic reminds me Atari 2600 games, moreover the concept is very simple and easy to understand, after just one game I already everything I had to do.
Great job :)

thanks for playing! put only a few hours into this game. it would be fun if i could spent more time to explore more mechanics and increase the replayability a little bit..

Submitted(+1)

I really feel the power of god and the redicule they casted on the little man. Great work

Developer

thank you for playing!

A cool little game! I love games made with PICO-8; they have an undeniable retro and minimalist charm. Well done!

Developer

thanks! gotta work more on the pixel art tho!

Submitted(+1)

Really simple, but solid and satisfactory to play, could easily be expanded with upgrades and things like that. Keep developing and Nice work!

(also, because you made sisyphus yellow i couldn`t stop thinking about this other sisyphus lol)

Developer(+1)

Thanks! A kinda cool coincidence. Heard of how good ULTRAKILL is but haven't played it. Definitely gonna try it later.

First Pico-8 game I played in this jam, so that was very fun to see. The presentation is minimalistic, but all the more satisfying. My hands are tight now.

Developer(+1)

thank you and long live pico-8
