How does your game fit the theme?
Scale Event Starting! is a game that is constantly in action, as you can tell from the name of the game. The main reason for this action is the event system and boss battles that take place every 10 seconds. Designing the events and organizing the boss battles fits in with the GMTK Game Jam 2024 “Built to Scale” theme as Scale means that the character is in scale (power-up), the dimensions are in scale, the time is in scale, the music is in scale and of course the battles are in scale.

This game is very enjoyable! The gun play and movement is slick, the enemies are great and the use of the theme is unique. I found the scalars applied all introduced a new twist to the gameplay, however, I could not find any indication of what, or when, one of these was going to activate. Great job on creating a very polished game!

We put a text for this in the description of the game, it actually works like this, every 10 seconds the user encounters an event and as long as this text is up, the event continues. In other words, one of the events that comes every 10 seconds may last 2 seconds and one may last 5 seconds, but a new event continues to come every 10 seconds, regardless of how long the previous event lasted. Definitely needs a few balancing tweaks, but the gameplay and effects are great. Lots of scales changing on you. Good work!

Really fun ! although the miniboss have too much health imo. But the game feels and played great ! And I really like the twist were different parameter randomly scales up and down, could put more emphasis on that.

The game felt really nice to play overall, I kept replaying it in order to get better at it. However, I stopped after dying multiple times to the mushroom miniboss because of "unfair" reasons. There are multiple things that made me feel powerless and frustrated while playing the game such as :

  • The mushroom boss sometimes spawning right on my face and making me lose a precious heart (because I often stay around the center of the map).
  • When the second phase of the mushroom boss occurs, I almost always have enemies spawning right on my face which I don't know how to avoid.
  • The progress bar and "scale up" messages often hide enemies coming from the top of the screen
  • The "splitting after some time" bullets are difficult to distinguish from normal bullets.
  • The bullet time mechanic felt hard to use as there is a delay between me pressing space and it activating.

Other issues I had:

  • It looks like it is intended, but the mini-gun almost _never_ shoots straight, in that I am more accurate by aiming next to the enemies.
  • The gun weapon (the one we pick up, with 20 ammo) feels like exactly the same (in terms of damage and rate) as the default gun.


But on the plus side:

  • The game feels really nice to play
  • The visuals were very interesting, I liked how it went full psychedelic in the main menu
  • I was really compelled to replay the game multiple times and did not feel bored, thanks to the weapon and "scale" variety.

So overall, even though I have some gripes with the game and did not play until the end, I had a really good time! So thank you :D

You are right in what you say, the game has some problems because it was made in a limited time. Thanks for your feedback, we want to keep improving the game with comments like yours. 

A logical option would be to show where the Mushroom Boss will spawn with a token before it spawns, giving the user time to escape. Likewise, for the enemies it spawns, we should have set it to spawn away from the character instead of spawning inside of us, for which we apologize. If you dash at the right time to avoid them, you don't take damage during the dash, maybe that would help.

About the messages blocking the enemy, I can say that the game is actually healthier to play in desktop mode than in the browser for this kind of situation. Because our first goal was to design the game as desktop. 

In the case you mentioned for the Space key, as you said a little bit, we had to put a delay, there is a delay of about 0.2 seconds, the reason for this was that the effects were distorted when users press and pull the key, unfortunately we could not find an alternative solution to this in a limited time, we will try to fix this again with updates.

In the case of the mini-gun, you're right, we tried to design it to shoot fast bullets randomly within a certain cone, but again, as I said, we couldn't fix this due to time constraints. We realize that we need to fix this bug, thank you again for your feedback.

The weapon you get with 20 bullets is actually called the Bounce Gun. This is because the bullets of this weapon ricochet between enemies, allowing you to kill multiple enemies. It is highly likely that in your case, you did not have the opportunity to try this weapon because multiple enemies did not come side by side. When it comes to adjusting the game difficulty, we wanted to design the game in a way that everyone could enjoy, so we wanted to reduce the enemy spawn rate a bit, which reduced the usability of the weapon. However, if you try the function again, you may notice that it works.

MINIboss????? More like mega boss on steroids! Holy cow! And just the fact that you got a boss fight into a jam game is incredible! Nice work!

When you get to the final boss you might get a little surprise, try it for a bit, remember that you are invulnerable in dash and you can slow down time! Thanks for your feedback!

Can't beat a classic bullet hell. Well executed! Just kinda wish the scaling events were more extreme.
