Really neat game, reminds me a bit of Binding of Isaac. Neatly animated, sounds and fun to play too!

Good job!

Had a lot of fun playing your game on my stream!

Developer

Thank you! It's always useful to have someone's first impression recorded! I will try to make the stairs more obvious!

This game is really good.  I played through a few times but the wizard always got me in the end.  My favourite build was a quick long range jab on the right hand and a massive slow powerful hook on the left.

The way you can choose which hand gets which powerups makes the game surprisingly complex and it could get even crazier with a few more powerup types.  Its great how they all work together, reminds me a lot of the Binding of Isaac (just a lot less gross).  One idea I had while playing is that maybe an upgrade could reduce the damage of the punch but makes it apply a debuff to the enemy to incentivise giving them the ol' one-two.

The theming is great as well.  Making the link between the classic rectangular dungeon and turning it into a boxing ring is brilliant.

Thanks a lot! Yeah, I got heavy inspiration from Isaac! Tha maze generation algorithm was even implemented by googling "binding of isaac maze algorithm"!

Thanks for the advice! I did have in mind power ups with more "magic" effects, but I ran out of time! As it stands, I acknowledge it's pretty easy to end up neglecting one hand and overpowering the other, depending on the buffs encountered.

Thank you for playing!

Really cool and tightly designed system!  At first I thought it was kinda redundant how there were 2 buttons that both punched but then I got a powerup and it all made sense.  Lovely retro artstyle that leaves me thinking of Punchout because of the boxing theme and art.  Well done!

Developer

Thank you! Yes, I was very close to making it a single handed style game because I felt the punches were getting redundant (I was after all inspired by Spear and Katana, an old flash game where you only have one weapon)

The thing is, the battle system I had originally planned was more complex, involving combos, that is, your punches would get faster/stronger if they were executed in a certain order, be it 1-1-2, 1-2-1, etc, and trade offs like "give up one arm for an ability to slow down enemies" but those didn't make the cut because I was running out of time and had to reduce scope!

Thankfully the power up system sort of made them less redundant!

Thank you for playing! Yes, I also thought of Punchout while developing it! :)

The controls were well thought, you made a great job at making the whole system feel good to use and fun, very nice entry, congrats!

Thank you!

Yo streq - This is by far the longest I played any game in GWJ54 submissions. This is a simple game. But man this is SO FUN. I loved that i could do left punch, right punch and I felt like I was moving back and forth like a boxer. Also, really enjoyed the powerups and different enemies. Really awesome job.

Developer(+1)

Hey thank you! I feel so flattered! I spent the longest time trying to get a nice punching mechanic and motion, it means a lot that it was appreciated!

I felt the impact! Nice work

This game was a blast in a glass. I loved punching the enemies and the graphics were charming. Very fun!

Developer(+1)

Thank you so much! :)

Hey Streq, I didnt take part in this jam, but stopped in to check out your latest entry. Really great work. The punching feels so good, you really accomplished a lot with what you put together here. The powerups felt perfect, not too overwhelming but gave interesting modifiers on your punches that changed it up just enough. I would've loved if the game continued a bit longer, but I was pretty OP by time I beat the wizard lol.

The dash was a bit underwhelming, its a short cooldown, but it doesn't move you much, so I didn't really feel the need to use it often.  And obviously its a game jam, so I know theres time constraints, but a couple props or backgrounds would've been great to give me a better idea of where I was on the map. Since all the rooms are identical it was sometimes hard sussing out where I was and where I hadn't been.

Still another very impressive entry. I hope you place high!

Developer

Hey! I was wondering when I saw the notification if you had submitted something! Thank you so much for stopping by!

I agree with all your feedback, I wanted to add some sort of audience outside the "rings" and a minimap that updated with the known rooms, binding of isaac style, but didn't have enough time! The dash was implemented before the full gameplay, and I agree it feels a bit "overkill" in the final product.

Thanks again for playing, for the feedback, and for the kind words!! :)

Wow, this game. Punching feels great, the powerups aren't overwhelming and really help with the progression! The theme is also hilarious as hell :P Amazing entry!

Developer(+1)

Hey thanks a lot! Glad the theme was appreciated :).

I've certainly never seen a boxing-related roguelike and that is apparently to my detriment! I really liked this, had fun with it for sure. Felt like the angle determination was a bit weird, but overall great work!

Developer(+1)

Thank you for playing! Yes, it's a bit unintuitive, the angle is determined when you start punching, so if you move, it will feel like you missed your target by the moved distance, it was supposed to mimic how hard it is in real life to change the trajectory of a punch mid swing. There's a powerup that fixes this, I added it specifically because I wasn't completely happy with it but wasn't sure how to make it less jarring.

Submitted

Ohhh, that actually sort of makes it much cooler! Very interesting!

Really nice concept - my favourite mechanics so far from this jam! Really intuitive movement and combat, and the whole game was very quick to grasp. Great!

Developer

Thank you!! That means a lot! :)

*Staggers up from the mat* "Hey curses..... I didn't hear no bell...."

This game was super fun! This like super natural boxing dungeon crawling thing you have going on is awesome. Great prologue, it really set the stakes for the game. The bosses were fun to fight. Simple but nicely stylized, fun sound design, and the game was easy to get into. Great job on the submission!

Developer

Hahaha thanks a lot! :)  I really appreciate that you found it fun and easy to get into! Thank you for playing!

Fun. I tried mashing left and right click at the same time. I guess that is very un-boxerly as it didn't work! Nice job.

Developer

I was on the fence on whether to allow double punches or not, I still am to be honest! I feel like it requires a bit more strategy this way, but maybe if I allow it as a rare power-up, like the "bigger punch" one, I can have the best of both worlds! Thank you for playing!

Submitted(+1)

I developed one mean left hook!  Never have I changed my mind so completely about a game mechanic before.  At the start, I was not fond of the combat.  However, as I practiced and the upgrades came, I freaking loved it!  In a short space of time it actually felt like a really good boxing game.  This game has much more to it than it might appear.  Some love has gone into this and I really enjoyed it.

Developer

Thank you!! Yeah, I was a bit worried about becoming blind to the combat's difficulty curve due to me being the only person who played the game before release! I'm really glad you powered through the initial friction and ended up liking it! Thank you for playing :)

Really fun game! Had me keen to beat the wizard but on three playthroughs that damn multishot kept getting me!!! The story set-up was a great way to give me some motivation to seeing it through! Thanks for creating an enjoyable experience, maybe next year Bobby will claim the title!!

Developer (1 edit) (+1)

I'm glad you enjoyed the setup!

It was my fear that the final boss was too hard, I didn't have time to run the game through any friends, so I was the only play tester, and that can only mean one thing  for difficulty.

If you wanna know how it ends, beating the wizard just shows a text on screen (like the one in the starting room) saying that the wizard died and bobby is the new champion!

Thank you so much for playing!!
