This is a really cool game, it reminds me a bit of a tile-laying board game. Also it had me laughing immediately with the tower and dog pieces haha. Good tutorial as well.

Developer

thanks, It's my first "real" Tutorial, and I learned a lot making it.
I was planning to add more fun facts, littles funny texts every 5-6 turns, but I spent all my time on better UI, better Tutorial, better feedback.

It was really funny how you completely changed the rules of chess, and the names of some of the pieces (like Dog lol). Really impressive how you managed to get so many rules in the game. They really make you have to think about how to get the most points. The pieces were a bit hard to read at a small size though (and maximizing the window doesn't scale the game).

Some music and sound effects would have been nice too.

Developer

Thanks, for scaling the only way is the settings resolution, I should have disabled window resizing to make that more obvious.
I had blurry text and sprites with the godot auto scaling, so i ended up with only integers scaling.

I decided to spend most of my time on UI, feedback and tutorial, as most playtest feedback i had were concerning the difficulty of keeping track of all the rules. Sound and graphics are the aspects of gamedev I'm the least comfortable with, Clearly a thing for me to work on for nexts jams.

So far the most original game I've tried in this game jam! It must have been hard to recreate the rules of chess. I enjoyed a lot the tutorial and the jokes about the story behind every pawn. Unfortunately I suck both at the "old" version of chess and this new one, haha. I managed to finish my first game but I'm not entirely sure how XD

Sound and music would have been nice but I understand that you didn't have time to do everything. I had screen size issues that I didn't manage to correct (resizing option wasn't working).

Thanks! When i had the idea of a game with forgotten rules, i took a chess game and tried making up rules until i was having fun. I ended up with this kind of placing game with adjacency bonus and effects. I spent a lot of time on the tutorial, I'm glad it was enjoyed.

From the feedback i got, the rules/strategy may have been a bit to complex to really enjoy for a game jam, something I'll have to work on for next time.

Interesting take on chess and a great use of the theme. It is incredibly complex and difficult to understand all the rules in the short time I have to play test for rating. Building an indepth tutorial was a great idea. I think there is a lot of potential here and could see a niche community building around this game and seeing how strategies evolve. For the game jam aspect all it needs it a little audio and sound effects and it would have been complete.

Thanks for playing.
I sent a message to a friend who makes music but with no answers from him, I focused on the tutorial and UI/feedback.

The last day I decided to improve what was already in the game and add some stuff to the tutorial rather than adding audio,.

I’ve played the Windows version and I must say, what an interesting reimagining of chess!

The is a lot of information to take in in order to play, and it could be quite overwhelming, if not for the window in the upper right, in which you can click on any piece to be reminded of its rules, it was very helpful. I think the accessibility as a whole was great, not only in the approach to the rules, but the available game options too. I liked how the theme of the jam played out in the tutorial.

Thanks, I tried to stick with the game mechanics i had at the beginning, and spent most of my time working on UI, feedback, tutorial and general polish. I'm glad it payed off.

Keeping track of the rules was a bit hard, it's incredible to think that our 21st century ancestors were capable of doing so with only the meager technology of "phone". Great job!

Developer

Thanks! I spent a lot of time trying to clarify the rules, adding feedback and informations. The tutorial is a bit dense right now, I guess a more "fluid" tutorial, bringing rules slower as you play a normal game would be far better.

Wow, what a wild difference from the ancient game of 21st-century chess! I really like the idea of taking a two-player game board and reinventing it to a single player solitaire-type game like this, and the rules you devised definitely seem interesting enough to lend themselves to replayabiity.

Unfortunately I had trouble keeping track of all the rules and the ways points could be scored, so perhaps this game is a bit over my head :). Even still, I found the game playable since you provided hints by highlighting squares and gave the different overlay options to show how the pieces work. The UI feels nicely polished, and the high score list is a nice touch too!

This is a fun interpretation of the theme and I think you did a great job! I don’t think I have any hope of getting a high score but maybe I will try again later :)

Developer

Thanks for playing! When i had the idea of forgotten rules, i took a chess game and just played the pieces and rules until i was having some fun.

I spent a lot of the time on UI, feedback, tutorial and general polish, trying to keep game mechanics to the basic idea i started with, glad it payed off :))

Okay interesting game. It took me a while to understand how it works. The only problem I had on a 4k screen is without proper scaling it was very hard to see what is what. The UI, the mechanic and also this tutorial were really great! In the following my best score I hit after 10 sessions.

Developer

Thanks for playing it, I didn't plan scaling very well from the start, and the stretch from godot was making thing blurry. The 2 biggest resolution were added just before submitting, to counteract a bit this problem.

Man, there was a bit of a learning curve with this, but it really paid off. Definitely one of the most unique concepts I've seen in a game jam, and funny too. Had a blast with it! I found myself very lost during the tutorial, but once I started actually playing I think I got the hang of it. Never really got what the leftmost overlay was supposed to mean but oh well haha. I got an 87 B^)

Developer

thanks, the tutorial is very dense but there was a lot of things to explain, and it's the first time I'm making one so i kept is simple.
the leftmost overlay shows witch piece are in a group, as well as how many point the group is scoring.

Submitted

I totally missed the group mechanic lol my bad. It does feel like a game you could really sink some hours into improving your strategies.

Developer(+1)

yeah, i didn't do the math on the real max score possible, but if you could place anything anywhere, the max is 265. The max score me and a friend achieved are the ones in highscore, so there is probably better strategies to find.

This was an interesting reinvention of chess(?). I ended up confusing the colours of my pieces a bunch of times like I had to move a Dog piece and I wasn't sure if it was black or white. Other than confusing the colours, I also ended up confusing pawns with bishops and kings with queens.

Developer

Re-doing piece graphics was on my to-do list, but i ended up working on other things until time ran out.

Hey GuiWong,

I just finished a round after completing the tutorial.

This is an amazing idea. It seems hard to grasp at first since there's a lot of information but when I started playing it actually clicked really fast. The Info window on the right side of the screen is super helpful!

Quick question: you hinted some information about old rules of chess during the tutorial. Is this how chess was played a long time ago?

Anyways, it is an amazing and original idea on this theme, congrats on the entry! :)

P. S. with some chill music I think this has the potential to become a fully released, coffee-break puzzle game! :)

Developer

Thanks for playing, the "old rules" are the real world rules from today. My idea was that in the future, most of chess rules were forgotten, resulting in a totally new game without anyone knowing it.

Submitted

Okay, I get it now. Genius idea, congrats again and thanks for clarifying!
