Hey, congrats on the entry! :)

I managed to get to level 5 on my first try, cool game!

Thanks! :)

I know the balance is off and I couldn't add nearly as much content as I wanted to. But the concept is pretty cool!

Cool idea and great execution, loved it! :)

Thanks for the feedback. I feel like it's a very promising concept, there are so many things to be added, just ran out of time. Exhaustion is a good idea :) Maybe even scaling the engine time up gradually

Thanks, glad you like it! :)

Thanks for the feedback! Admittedly I'm not that good with music and sound so thanks for the tip! I'll keep that in mind :)

Írj Discordon Feri, aztán valamikor mehet egy kis játék! ^^

Thanks for the feedback!

That's super helpful feedback because you're the first one to say that the mechanic was repetitive and boring.

I think 50X casts might be the other side of the spectrum, but for sure it would be a good idea to provide more spellcasts per drawing.

Thanks again for the remarks! :)

Hey Ryan!

Thanks for the feedback, glad you liked the mechanic. The solution is based on this algorithm:

https://depts.washington.edu/acelab/proj/dollar/index.html

I've found a really old, Godot 2 implementation of it here: https://github.com/blurymind/1dollar_gesture_recogniser

This is what I updated and tweaked for a Godot 4 version which is available on my GitHub:

https://github.com/guladam/BigBlackBookOfMagic/tree/main/spellcasting

Hope that makes sense! :))

Thanks for the feedback!

Yeah, that's true. The algorithm only works if you draw it from either end of the symbol. It has to do with the implementation but that's a nice catch :)

Bot-to-top and top-to-bot works but if you start from the middle you're screwed, sorry 😔

Thanks for the detailed feedback! :)

Yeah the fireball hitbox turned out to be a bit weird for some reason. Other people mentioned issues with audio as well but I'm not quite sure about the cause. X would mean enabled by default.

I also agree with the level layout remarks, aim to do better next time in that regard.

Thanks for the feedback, glad you enjoyed it! :)

Absolutely agree with the level layout remarks.

Hi Ryan,

I love the roguelike deckbuilder genre so I was super excited when I saw the kind of game you made. It is a short but fun experience, I managed to beat it on the first try.

It's a good mix of a 3d tile-based exploration and deck-building, congrats on your entry! :)

Hi artemis387,

This was a really fun game!

I was a bit lost at first on what to do but once I figured it out I had a lot of fun! :)

Great job, congrats on your entry! ^_^

Hi hopem,

This is a neat idea, really like the cross between a tower defense game and the Vampire Survivors like hordes of enemies and bullets.

This is feels more like a working prototype of the gameplay loop, as others mentioned, it needs a lot of polish.

But I feel like the gameplay itself is fun and addictive so it might be worth working on it after the jam! ^_^

Great job anyways!

Hi MaxScore,

Congrats on your entry, this was a fun platformer game overall. :)

From the player's perspective I've tried to fight the green enemies at first but ended taking a lot of damage from their leap attacks. After a while, I figured the game is much easier if you don't attack at all. I was able to go through the game quicker this way.

Thanks for the feedback, much appreciated! :)

What do you think a good alternative control scheme might be?

I was thinking of maybe holding down a button and just moving the mouse instead? Or alternatively, pressing a button twice to start and to finish drawing? I don't know but it's a fair point, holding RMB is not the most accessible / comfortable choice here.

Thanks for the feedback, always appreciated!

Maybe I shouldn't have switched to Godot 4 this early :|

Yeah I agree with the other stuff. I definitely should spend more time on clarity, level design and a clear tutorial in my future jams! :)

Thanks for the feedback, much appreciated!

Never thought about making it a co-op experience but that's a great idea! :)

Hi strutcode,

This was a really fun game, congrats on the entry! :)

It had a really nice atmosphere of mystery to it. To puzzle were great, introducing the mechanics one by one as you should.

Liked the green bean projections :D

Honestly, this was a perfect little jam game experience for me. :)

The only constructive feedback I can give is the movement and jumping feels a bit l clanky and slidey like it wasn't truly in sync with the animations.

Hi Team,

This is a really fun idea and great execution. You left a lot of mechanics to discover for the players but I believe that's part of the fun.

Overall really enjoyed it! :)

Hi Team,

This is the most original, unique take on this theme I've seen so far, congrats! :)

The game is super polished, with a really great atmosphere. It's amazing really what a team of talented individuals can do in such a short amount time!

It was a super chill experience.

Hats off to all of you.

Hey, thanks for the feedback. :)

  • glad you liked the name :D
  • yeah I'm glad the didn't miss the sound effects it's an integral part of the game
  • "I feel like I recognized the character sprite from the winner of the last jam, was that also you?" -> no, but I've used a public domain asset, so the previous winners might have used that as well :'D
  • being lost and not knowing what to do is great input actually I'm glad you said that because next time I'll try to improve on clarity. I wanted a much more polished tutorial but ran out of time unfortunately.
  • That's weird about the lightning spell because the drawing recognition is pretty forgiving. If you want to give it another go you can see your unlocked spells if you pause the game (Esc or P). Zap should be something like this:

    |

    | ___ ___

                |

                |

Notice that the vertical lines are straight maybe you tried to draw a zigzag pattern? I'm just curious why it didn't work.

Thanks for the feedback anyways, super helpful, I appreciate it :)

Hi  aTwigAnd2Stones,

That was a really cute platformer game, liked the idea of unlocking your abilities as you go! :)

Managed to beat it with a couple deaths, my only minor complaint is that the character controller is a little bit "icy" so it takes some time to get used to.

Great entry overall, congrats!

Hi TheShaggyDev,

That was a really unique take on the theme, and the execution was flawless as well.

It was super enjoyable with a nice atmosphere and it kept me going until the end.

Congrats on your entry! :)

P. S. I really like your YouTube channel, hope to see more videos soon!

Hi Lost_Pages,

Congrats on your entry, I really liked the idea you went for! The atmosphere was super good from the beginning and it was a nice balance of trying to find torches, fighting enemies and keeping the light strong enough to see stuff!

Really fun overall, enjoyed it! :)

Hi Robot_With_A_Hat_Games,

Congrats on your entry, I enjoyed it. Finishing a game is not an easy task to do so I'm happy for you!

It was challenging which kept me going for a long time, managed to unlock 4 out of 5.

Hope that you can finish many more in the future! :)

Hi LittleBeardMan,

This was honestly my favourite entry in the jam so far. Very much inspired by Binding of Isaac I believe but in a good way. The menu and the whole game is super polished and there's a lot of content you crammed in in such a short amount of time.

Awesome job, thanks for the fun! :)

Thanks for the feedback, absolutely great ideas there, much appreciated.

Yeah in hindsight definitely would make much more sense to go top-down instead of sidescrolling. :)

Thanks for the feedback. I always love a good pun :D

If can just press Esc to pause and it shows all your available spell symbols in the pause menu but I it turned out a bit hard.

Glad you enjoyed the system ^^

I absolutely get that, my jam games always turn out way too difficult :(

I should probably try to lean towards making them easier too! :D

Was cool to read all the plans you had, thanks for coming back to me and congrats again! ^_^

Hi la.panon,

Can you enable the fullscreen option for HTML5 in the itch page?

It's a bit hard to read this way. ^^

Hi deejaiArpyBarner,

This game is a cool combination of puzzle thinking and dexterity. I think the graphics have a charming to them as well.

Really enjoyed it, though it requires some trial and error.

I think faster throwing animation would definitely be great for the players.

Hi Delpirejjwinter,

What an amazing entry, enjoyed playing through all 3 levels. It is a PS1-esque vibe platformer which I really really like.

If you want some constructive feedback:

  • it would have been really nice to have a piece of UI showing the number of coins (ink?) available per level so I  know if I collected every single one of them.
  • the cultist weren't really threatening you can just straight up outrun / jump them

Congrats, it was super fun! :)

Hi kobemano,

Wow that was an experience, I enjoyed every minute of it! :D

The voice acting and the drawings are so goofy it's impossible not to love it.

Great job with your entry!

Hi everyone,

Congrats on your entry! Really loved the atmosphere of the game, the pixel art illustrations and sound effects are amazing, good job! :)

The story is nice as well, it was a short yet great experience.

For me, the controls were a bit confusing though with WASD keys. Somehow it felt inconsistent where the character goes when I press a direction.

Hi Everyone,

This is a super polished game, it's a full experience. The writing, the atmosphere the gameplay mechanics, absolutely loved it!

One of my favourite entries so far, I really enjoyed it!

My only constructive feedback (=nitpicking) would be to choose a different font next time because sometimes it was a bit of a struggle to read (the word 'tile' for example)

Hi Kuma-Gee,

Congrats on your entry! :)

As you said, we had kind of a similar idea but the games turned out be pretty different, didn't they?

I love the idea of using the arrow keys while standing still to cast. It gives a right risk / reward decision for the player to choose between fleeing / casting a powerful spell.

The pixel art and the amount juice and polish make this game a really pleasant experience.

I wish that I had a chance to look at the unlocked spells though because sometimes I forgot the combinations, haha.

Awesome job!

Hi Ribbon,

Congrats on your entry! :)

The game captivated me from the first seconds, it has a really nice atmosphere and aesthetic to it. The story was wholesome and interesting as well, I definitely didn't expect that. The boss fight was challenging yet fun, maybe it was a bit hard to see those small circles around him.

For me personally, the fish-eye effect made me a bit dizzy but not a big deal.

Awesome job, was a pleasure to play it! :)

Hi,

Thanks for the feedback. I agree that the map isn't the best though. Never thought about the touch screen possibilities, but it's a great idea actually, thank you so much! :)
