What Game Engines Do You Plan To Learn?

Curious what game engine everyone might be looking into using!

Personally, I believe I am going to make a decision between Godot or Unreal based on if I want a 2D or a 3D game. I'm interested in both.

What are you looking into? Godot, Unreal, GameMaker, RPGMaker, something else? And why?

I've always been pretty curious about MonoGame. I'm more comfortable with code/frameworks, but I don't have any experience with C#, so I'd be learning a new language and framework at the same time.

I'm between Godot because  it's the closest to Unity and Defold because I like mobile gaming. But I may be choosing for Game Maker...

I saw GameMaker said they're doing free exports for the next three months in response to the news, so it might be the perfect time!

godot, i really have been looking at it for a long time

I personally use Gdevelop(because I don’t have experience coding) and it’s very useful. It is perfect for 2d games and it’s starting supporting 3d. Easy to learn  and very versatile!

I'm likely switching to Unreal Engine. I've been looking at game dev jobs (indie and AA) and unfortunately it's mostly Unity and Unreal job listings near me. I'm definitely not discouraging Godot if you are making your own games, but I'm not expecting much desire for Godot developers in the very short-term.

I’ve been shopping around a fair bit for the right engine. As a former Unity developer the engines that appeal the most to me are Stride, Cocos Creator, and Flax Engine. For the purposes of this jam I will be using Flax for ease of use as its syntax is incredibly similar to Unity’s– I even wrote a little Unity->Flax cheat sheet of functions and approximates which I’ll be updating over the next month.

If I were to work on a mobile game I think Cocos is the best option as a highly optimized mobile/web engine, but learning TypeScript for gamedev is a headache I’m saving for another day.

im definitely bookmarking the flax guide. sadly the support for apple silicon mac is not there but it is actively being worked on so yay

Flax is wonderful so far but it’s undercooked in some important areas. I think if you give it few months, now that all these resources and extra hands are flooding in from Unity, it’ll be something spectacular and generally cleaner around the edges as time goes on.

yeah one of the people is making a few prs on github for arm macs so hopefully all the bugs will be patched. it does actually work (one of the prs) but is very slow. i think its using apple rosetta conversion. in the mean time godot is my friend

I just installed Godot, I’ve been using Unity daily for about 6 months, am I allowed to practice in Godot before the jam starts? The jam rules seem pretty lax, I got a GDTV Godot course and I wouldn’t mind poking around the engine before the Jam but won’t if it’s not in the spirit of the Jam :)

I'm not sure if I will use godot or make it from scratch with c++ and SDL2. I've used unity for 2 years but unless they revert the changes AND make the TOS unchangeable I won't go back.

Though I've already some experience with c++ and SDL2 I've probably should use godot, though still I've never made a game with SDL2.

I'm thinking either Unreal or Godot, depending on the theme. Might go Unreal to get some practice with it

I want to try Cocos Creator, because someone recommends (or challenging) me. I am not sure the benefit, but I think it will be useful in the future.

I'm thinking Godot...Unreal seems too heavyweight for me

Im gonna try godot for this jam to see if i like it and also learn gdscript i would use c# since of course im a unity dev but its a massive pain in the butt to set up

I'm going with rust&bevy. Have been using Godot for ~5 years, but I found that the control bevy gives on organization is very nice.

UNREAL FOR REAL

Moving away from Unity and going with Godot! Just started learning over the past couple of days hoping to make a nice first project with it. :)

okay guys just posting this to broaden the game engine choices. Underrated Game Engines Round-up – GameFromScratch.com   . I am thinking of trying Defold - Official Homepage - Cross platform game engine   as I already use Gdevelope   most of these are open source so they can't pull the something as Unity.

I’ll be using the Flax Engine for this jam. But I also had a mad scientist idea– what if I made the game in two separate game engines, and used a plain-text saving system so that you could play it and have the progress tracked in both games?

It’s a horrible idea but I can’t shake it, and I’ll probably attempt it.

For me, I’m going to use Godot, and probably jump ship to Godot, mainly because I have some experience with it, and it’s similar to other engines I’ve used before.

A few that I'm tracking are:

Flax  https://flaxengine.com/

Stride https://www.stride3d.net/

and primarily learning Unreal so I can convert a few canceled Unity projects going forward...

stride looks pretty good, might try it sometime soon

I have made 6 Unity projects for game jams so far so this time I will be trying to make a game using just HTML, CSS, JS and a few other frameworks.

A friend of mine jumped ship to Godot and wants to learn it, but since I already know it (and they want to team up) we're playing with GB Studio instead for funsies. Love2D because GBS is too damn quirky for either of our tastes.

im trying scratch as a challenge lol
