Excellent work. The controls and animations are great (I sat around teabagging and dashdancing for a long time actually) and the game is playable if you're missing a hand. For those annoyed by the wind-up on your running animation, it's both normal for the genre and necessary for the gameplay.

This has a very heavy and admirable Metroid influence in the design while not being entirely similar. I approve of the classic approach of introducing things that damage you before putting the player in actual danger.

Clever graphics! I don't believe they are rulebreaking but I am a musician, not an artist. There are times where you can't see enemies about to hit you (a very common issue in this jam) and the audio cues help a lot, but I would hate to be deaf and try to nail the timing in this game.

Intelligent adaptive soundtrack proving that this kind of thing doesn't need a lot of notes (minimalism is actually super tough to do right). SFX are suitably high in the mix and fit the animations.

This is probably my favorite game so far this jam! I think literally my only complaint is that there's no reason we need to go through doors as slowly as Samus does :) ... Also iffy on your ending but I bet that is a Me thing and other people will love it. Anyway here are some hints if anyone in the comments is stuck in the two places I think people will get stuck.

Hint 1 - This confused me for a moment so: getting a new color does NOT make you fall through platforms unless you're in the appropriate animation and turn into that color.

Hint 2 - In the red area, there is a series of laser traps that have a set rhythm of firing after 8 beeps. If you move or jump on the 4th beep each time, you can move fluidly though this area. Or I could anyway. Most of my deaths were in adjacent rooms.

You found an awesome way of making a metroidvania with no combat. Loved playing through it. Controls were pretty smooth. Took a bit of getting used to the acceleration and deceleration but quickly discovered why it needed to work like that when I got the yellow powerup. Had a lot of fun with this one. Good job!

Hey! I made a top ten video of the games from this jam. (Spoiler alert, this game is in it)

If you like the video, please feel free to share it :)

Check it out!

Very interesting game and nice mechanic.

The colors and the challenges are amazing. Great game!

I really like the use of colours!

Only got the Yellow power as of writing this, and I've seen great level design paired with smartly designed controls and an interesting gimmick. Definitely something worth a sequel or larger remake.

This game is awesomely dessigned, with incredibly responsive controls and beautiful art, one of my top 3 for sure.

Nice little metroidvania, well done! :)

I failed a lot, not going to lie. But, I failed upwards. The game makes failing a learning experience and doesn't punish you too hard for doing so. It strangely feels a lot like Metroid with it's laid back atmosphere and special abilities that allow you to access other areas of the map. The art is really nice (especially the death animation). The little color/ability cutscenes are super smooth. Great job!

Some really great ideas in the puzzle rooms and movement. I liked the constant checkpoints, they make resetting fluid and fun.

Very enjoyable. Well executed across the board.

I like the blurry player character and use of transparency in general.

Thanks!

I like the idea of unlocking colors to reach certain areas. The lasers have a very fun sound.

I think the movement of the character could be a bit smoother.

The animations are great!

Nice little metroidvania! I like the take on colors, the simple but effective visuals as well as the music that gets more and more complete after we get new abilities. My main suggestion for improvement, which is pretty subjective, would be to try to make the character movement more responsive/juicy, because sometimes I got the feeling it was slightly too cumbersome to control. Great entry anyway!

Developer(+1)

Thanks for playing! Do you have any specific critique of the movement (if there was anything that stood out)? I’d love to get some opinions as I think I want to polish this game up a bit to release a post-jam version.

I’d say a good general rule would be to favor fast and responsive pace of movement/actions. If that makes the game easier, fine, just add more ennemies and challenges, which will make the game feel even more satisfying :)

That is of course a rather subjective opinion and feel free to dismiss it if you want to, that’s perfectly fine 😄

Funny, I liked the character design.

Interesting gameplay, and the character’s animations were nice!

Great sound design.

Crazy animation work on the character. Very smooth, it's amazing for that scale

Developer(+1)

Thank you for the compliments! Do you mind me asking what you mean by “real 64 pixels”? Are you referring to the antialiasing / transparency that we used?

Submitted(+1)

Actually yes, I think I misjudged the visual smoothness which seems indeed to be caused by the antialiasing and not upscaled camera

This game is smooooth. Very nice work. Sort of like a metroid-vania but reminded me a lot of older cinematic platformers like Prince of Persia. Great work! Oh also the thumbnail is great! It was definitely eye-catching

Developer(+2)

Thank you for the kind words! We took some inspiration for the animation from Prince of Persia and Flashback. Our stuff isn’t rotoscoped, but it does wear its inspiration on its sleeve.

Fantastic mini-metroidvania, with simple, intuitive mechanics. Each room felt almost puzzle-like, with a particular highlight being the up-then-down-again alternating blue and yellow block room (I hope that makes sense?) - chaining my jump and crouches to get over in one fluid motion felt fantastic.

I loved the way new mechanics were introduced, with the simple animations perfectly explaining what was required without a single word onscreen. The player's animations are also fantastic, with a remarkably smooth and natural feeling to them for so few pixels!

The various particle systems for lazers and deaths are so juicy :)

The adaptive music was a very nice touch, with the new instrument introduced with each power really helping to push me forwards
