Comments on the jam
this was fun! I am new-ish gamedev, so I spent most of my time figuring out simple things and fixing easily avoidable bugs, but other than that, I had a lot of fun!

Really nice entry

I particularly like the sound design, while the main level music is a bit minimal the boss theme and game over jingle are cool.

Spritework is also good and i like the variety of enemies environements and spells, and i'm not sure cause it went a little fast but i suppose you added a sort of megaman element to the spells (by that i mean i think the mushroom boss took more damage from the fire spell) which i like.

If i had to nitpick i'd say main issues i had were that i couldn't figure out how to interact with the shopkeeper, and that in the starting segment, walkable ground doesn't pop enough from the background.

Other than that it's fun to play, the boss was a cool bit and i like how defeating him is what unlocked a new ability through the environement rather than the character.

Good job especially for a solo effort with no external assets at all :o

Thanks!  Yeah, different ability's do different damage (the second boss actually HEALs if you hit him with the wrong abbility), but i didn't have time to show it in the sprites

This game was really really fun to play!

Aesthetically the game is super impressive! The fact that this was a solo dev project is insane! I really enjoyed the fact that I could change out the potion I was using and liked the different animations for each. The scene transitions were also really well done.

If I could make one change to this game I would have loved for the attacks to have been a bit farther away. Because the spells took a quick little second to actually happen, it was quite difficult to get a handle on how to accurately hit the enemies. However, this is a personal statement so I can also see how making the attacks a bit more complicated could be a plus to the gameplay as well.

Great submission!

Hey, this was really cool! The witch has some great personality, and the elemental effects look great. Not sure how to kill the frogs yet.

so much fun to be had on this one, art is lovely and the music is minimal but great I wish there were check points or something as I have just been killed by that lizard and and thrown back to the start! But it's a testament to how good it is that I am going to go back and play again!

Great job

Fast fluid motion. The graphics are adorable and animation is silky smooth. I appreciate how fast it feels. At first I was fumbling with the controls but after a while I got used to it. 8-bit for life!

Cool game! I didn't like how when the bats got really close I couldn't hit them, though. Great game, good job!

Had a fun time, the art was very cute, and the boss fights were simple but enjoyable. One thing is that for the combat, I wasn't too sure how the attacks were different. Some of them seemed to work more on different enemies, but I wasn't sure if that was by design, or if it had been an issue with the hitbox.

Nice submission!

It was by design.  Lightning did more damage to the bats and frogs, and fire did more damage to the monkeys.  For the lizard boss, you do more damage with lighting when it's health was yellow, but more with fire when it was red.  The Octopus boss had a mechanic that I didn't have time to show in game, but you have to damage it with a ice to freeze the 'skin', then hit it with the fire and it resets every time it moves.  I didn't have time to show that in the sprites, but the mechanic was there.  Thanks for the compliment on the art!

Very pretty! You should add some parallax too.

I would sugest to give a little bit of attention to the combat, it's difficult to hit the enemies.

Very sweet little game, congrats for the submission!

Well done on finishing and submitting, only small negative was the attacks were hard to hit, don't know if user error or a problem with a hurt/hit box somewhere. I had a fun time with this :)

Developer

This might be because of the way I did the attacks.  attacking spawns the corresponding sprite in front of you, and that is the attack hitbox.  but, if you spam it before it finishes playing, it does not count as two attacks, but one.  so you kinda have to space out your attacks

Played it already for before you Polished it and im Impressed!

Really good work, at some points it was hard, it fits the Metroid Vania and i really enjoy how it turned out.

Good work man!

Thanks! I tried my best to take all of your comments to heart and improve on those issues.  It is good to get out of my own space and take feedback, and it helped me a lot.  So, thank -YOU- for the critique and the complements!

I really liked the art in this game. I'm a terrible artist, so I'm pretty easy to impress. However, there was one bit that made it hard for me to complete the game - the dithering in the basement dungeon. Imo, it was way too much and unfortunately gave me a headache while trying to fight the mushroom. I think that's my biggest criticism with this game. Other than that, I really enjoyed it. Congratulations on finishing in time and good luck!
