Description
OST Game Jam 7

sc: https://soundcloud.com/don-gi-651191075/mothers-guidance-ost7

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Genre: Fantasy, Orchestral, Hard Loopable

DAW: FL STUDIO 21

Runtime: 3:46

Theme: Ephermal moments make permanent memories

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

The game narrative was simplified to fit the scene at hand:

" Within her lies an intimate memory that she holds dear. A mothers tune, sung to her daughter while dancing among the bubbles. The ineffable joy stored within these memories drive her to explore an unforgivingly bitter world. A journey of self-discovery, tolerance, and understanding."

3D Platformer, abilities based on discovering new melodies hidden within her own memories. Power of the voice, song, a lot of melodic/angelic sound design envisioned.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Used various kontakt libraries:

Stradivari Violin - Solo Violin
Jade Orchestra - Percussion, Women Choir,
Stock Kontakt - String Ens, Choir Ens, Glockenspeil, Grand Piano
(Other misc stuff I forgot)

I used granular synthesis and vocodex mod to create some of the blips and bubbles.

Inspired by Square Enix games and prods.

Theme

Picture theme

How does it fit the theme?
I tried to add a narrative to the scene provided at that specific moment. We see a familial figure and a little girl holding hands, basked in ocean refractions and surrounded by child-like crayon drawings. This was a memory, a very cherished memory, in the world of the little girl's mind. In this unforgettable moment I envisioned them dancing and singing in folkish waltz style. As they sung and danced, bubbles fluttered by, the ocean sang in harmony, all creating an iffeable experience to imagine.

I took a very literal approach to incorporating these elements with forceful bubbly sound design, ethnic east asian instruments, and the idea of ocean "waves" into the volume/reverb automation. I wanted my track to breathe, move, and expand upon the idea of falling deeper into the scene. Momentum progressively builds through each section, signaling growth and excitement towards the exploration at hand. Instruments clash and exchange as moving parts flow and flutter around the listener to provide nice ear candy.

Certain sections were relatively calm, while others bursted in various dynamic instrumentation. I wanted to replicate the feeling of nostalgia within the melody, so having it repeat multiple times allowed it to grow as more instruments were added into arrangement. The instrument selection also morphed through the sections to replicate familarity. The closer she got to the real memory, the closer the instrumentation got to more worldly/east asian influences based on her garment/envisioned background.

Really pretty piece, I love it ! The sound design on the "blip and bubles" and panning is amazing, the orchestral is STUNNING, I just really love this track !  It's dense, and it has heart !

Developer

Thank you! I'm really happy how people are noticing all the blips, beeps, and bubbles. They were one of the smaller components I wanted to shine!

Very well written amazing, mix is great too, awesome build up with the vocal near the end. It just finish with a super brutal cut, other than that its fantastic. well done !

Developer

Thank you! The cut happens since it was hard-looped via FL Studio's Wrap Export, so it's meant to go straight back into the beginning! Sounds horrible on SC though ;-;

Ha yeah makes sense, I was trying to read in the description if it was mentionned but didn't find anything.

Such a unique and refreshing sound! Your arrangement and composition here was top notch and the movement during the 2:24 mark gave me chills! Also, those vocals added so much depth to an already well put together piece. Superb job!

Developer

Thank you!! 2:24 seems to be a good commonpoint in this comp, will definitely use that feeling in future comps as well now!

I always love hybrid orchestral things, and the piano writing in the back of this I am sure is subtly noticed but without it the track would be so different. This is lovely!!! Congrats on a great submission :)

Developer(+1)

Thank you! The initial idea was sketched out on piano so it sounds a lot fuller in context!

Such a cool perspective to be able to hear  it started as that!!

This is awesome! It's so beautiful and epic at the same time, I had a blast listening to it. And now I get why you were asking about vocal VSTs, this is going to sound absolutely epic with something like Atlantis III. Can't wait to hear more of your stuff!

Developer

Thank you! Looking forward to seeing more stuff from you too, JRPG stuff is right up our alleys

Very touching melody with a mesmerizing accompaniment. The choice of some more traditional/folki-ish instruments and vocals besides the normal Orchestra gave it a very enchanting sound. Also the Bubble sounds and other FX were very tastefull. Wonderfull work.

Well done! I love the little glitchy textures layered in the background. Your use of instrumentation on this track shows confidence and expertise in the genre. The bubbly pops and vocals fit very well with the themes presented for this jam. An exceptional piece that is beautifully composed through and through.

No words, just pure bliss! Easily in the top of what i heard until now. It sounds so full and thick, but everything is crystal clear, everything is beautifully intertwined, just...wow! Easy 5 stars for me!

Hi there! I love the direction and the progression that this project invokes. I like the name Mothers Guidance in drawing upon the figure that the girl looks at in the original picture prompt!

Nice dynamics programming on the various orchestral libraries! Which string library are you using for the lead violin? It sounds pretty good. All the percs and ear candy really help carry the track's momentum too. Solid transitions in and out of sections, and really nice instrument choices.

Developer

Thank you!  I’m using Stradivari Solo Violin by NI!  It has a lot of good articulations, esp the short samples.  Legato function is pretty good but has some phasing issues + sounds tin, but overall a decent library

This is PHENOMENAL!! It gives me incredible Final Fantasy 13 and 14 vibes, and say what you will about 13 (I love it), it had a very unique soundtrack.

This is one of my favorites so far. Endlessly interesting and surprising. Well done!

Thank you! I've taken a lot of inspiration from Square Enix compositions, so you've hit the nail head on :)

Everything sounds very smooth and flows very well. The use of vocals completely surprised me, but sounded great. Very cool!

I love in this this track:

1) Percussion

2) Small electronic effects in the ears (Seriously, they fit very well)

3) How instruments delight the ears ...

4) Singing destroyed me completely.

There is a lot of individuality) Great work!

Developer

tysm! I love using electronic samples as some sort of ear candy, theyre definitely my favorite sound design choice
