  • got a very interesting game in the making here. I love how you played with the shadows and light. I just wish you leaned into the other theme more since you where supposed to use both, but I still hope you continue to develop this concept further.

Did you include your Game Design Document as a Google Drive link?
Yes

Seriously... did you include your Game Design Document?
Yes

Is your game set to Public so we can see it?
Yes

Tell us about your game!
Overshadowed is a puzzle platformer where you work through a changing landscape of platforms, lights and shadows, detaching your own shadow from yourself with your magic flashlight, to reach the end of each level. Use your shadow to cross shadow bridges and manipulate platforms to get safely to the exit.

This version of the game is basically a concept demo and includes 6 levels of increasing difficulty. The levels can be collectively completed within a couple minutes if you know the solutions, but hopefully they will provide at least a bit of challenge to new players.

Extra Notes
I just started learning game development a couple months ago (partly thanks to Thor's Make Video Games video) after literal decades of wishing I could make games, and this jam has given me the motivation I needed to complete an original project. Thank you!

Clever idea! Super fun puzzles, very chill music, cute art! Even though I haven't played it in some 20 years, it reminded me of The Lost Vikings. I loved that game. I especially loved what happened when I instinctively tried to jump hahah! 🌞

Developer

Haha thanks! I appreciate the feedback. I never played The Lost Vikings, I'll have to check it out.

Cool mechanic ! It's awesome seeing other shadow platformers and the different angles each one takes. The puzzles are really clever too, although so far I'm still stuck on the last level. The difficulty spiked quite a lot in that one (no problem though, it's quite common in jam games).

One thing that I would've liked as a little QoL change is showing the max range your shadow can travel from you.  I had some difficulty determining how far my shadow could go before being teleported back.

Overall, awesome game !

Also, aye green frog gang

Thank you! That's a great suggestion about communicating the max shadow range.

The puzzles are really clever, and the clean level design suits the mechanics very well. I like the sass from the characters when you try to jump, lol. Really cute game!

Developer(+1)

Thank you so much! I'm really glad you found the "no jumping" messages :)

I love the minimalist vibe! The music is great and the puzzles are nice I had a hard time on the last one though (maybe I'm just dumb).

Awesome game!

Developer

Thank you! The last level is my fault for not easing you into it. I had planned on adding more levels before that, I just ran out of time.

Really superb game! I enjoyed this quite a bit. When the music kicked things up a notch on the last level I was like "here we go!" Loved the music and the level design. Well done!

Very cool concept! And congrats on taking the leap into making your first game jam—huge accomplishment! I really liked the idea of using moving light sources and having shadow platforms only affect your shadow character. It's quite unique and well executed.

However, I did have some trouble understanding the solutions at times. My expectation was that my shadow would appear in the same spot it disappeared, so there were moments when I felt a bit confused about how to approach solving a level. On the last level, I think I just got lucky!

I also appreciated the little detail of having a jump button but no jumps ;D

Great work!

Developer

Thank you so much! I really appreciate you recording yourself too. It was really helpful to watch you play. Also, I love the way you cheesed the final level haha. I didn't realize that was possible, but shadows do weird things!

This idea is fantastic; I feel like I need a second brain to handle it, haha! Some buttons need to be held down, while others only need to be pressed once. Maybe distinguishing between them would be better. In any case, this is really cool!!!!

Developer(+1)

Thank you! I was going for relaxing, so I'm glad that hit. And I'm glad you liked the music!
