- I enjoyed playing through your game! The pixel are was actually superb!!I appreciate everything you laid out within your GDD, and I can clearly see your inspirations coming through. With what little I play, I couldn't quite see "You are the weapon" come through, but I also kept dying early on. The music was really wonderful too! The only concern was that the "eat" section threw me for a loop for a moment. I didn't realize what everything translated to in the field. Overall had a lot of fun, and I hope you will continue production!
- Ok so I put several hours and I couldn't beat it. The attacking is extremely obtruse, the spawn chances of the enemies are ridiculously balanced (read: completely random and requires just RNG to get a run going). I am absolutely going to continue playing until I beat this. But just a little bit of balancing and this could be so much more enjoyable. Different movement patterns from enemies rather than JUST STRAIGHT TOWARDS YOU ENDLESSLY UNTIL YOU GET THEM TO DESPAWN/stop locking onto you as they aren't being loaded. Defense only makes situations worse, instead of making the enemies deaggro. The amount of each tier of enemy should have a limit. THIS BEING SAID. I loved playing so much. Very enjoyable feedback loop. The pixel art is really nice!!! I quite love it. Please make more!

Have you checked that your GDD is publicly accessible ?
Yes
Is your game set to public on itch.io so we can see it?
Yes
Summarise your game!
You're a hedgehog. You are getting ready to get cozy for winter. But oh no! A honey badger took over your home! Feed on worms, snails and later on bigger critters to become the baddest hedgehog around and beat the honey badger. FEED ON HIM. FEED ON ALL OF THEM!
Enemies will come at you when they are in your vicinity and are stronger. You need to evade them or block their attempts at eating you by holding the defend button. Once they are on the menu (their portrait appears at the top of the screen), they can be eaten themselves. Eating provides EXP, allowing you to level up and get stronger.
Controls:
Enter/Space for Feeding
Ctrl/Q for Defending
Shift for Attacking
Equivalents on gamepad are in the GDD
Please explain how your game fits the theme:
You are becoming the weapon by making yourself stronger, you beat the odds and become the apex predator in your forest. While you might not be the weapon from the start, a hedgehog taking out a fox or an owl in one chomp is pretty badass.
Is there anything you'd like the judges to pay particular attention to?
First time pixel art, feedback would be nice! (First time for everything actually, but the pixel art is dear to our hearts!)

Love the idea you came as a theme and the aesthetics are great. I think its very unique and unexpected which is awesome. Loved the "Defense" sound, it was super cute. The art was also nicely done, creating a nice cozy atmosphere. As for gameplay, unfortunately I didn't enjoy it much :( The game felt slow, movement strange and some predators insta killed me without even option to do something. I was questioning defense mechanic at this point. Not sure how well faster pace would be in this type of game but maybe you can think about other ideas how to change something which would be both challenging and clear to the player (Might be just skill issue). I also couldn't figure out what to do with XP and how to upgrade (if even possible).
Regarding the pixel art I wouldn't be able to tell it was your first time making pixel art if you wouldn't mention it. Sure there is place for growth but I mean, it is done so well that its hard to tell you never done it before. I guess its a good sign for future improvements and that it will become even better.
P.S. Maybe its a good idea to allow fullscreen on itch page so we can turn the game full screen?
Fun game, I was greeted with music that reminded me of Terraria. And seeing all the woodland critters and animals in the scene were very nice. I thought the animations for the hedgehog defending itself was also really cute, peeking out a little bit to see if the attackers were gone yet. It felt a bit tedious though, running around and eating everything 🤣🤣 I honestly would've liked to see the other animals interact with each other as well (like you could have escaped a ferret attacking you if a snake came by and ate it first). I thought the endgame badger was the best pick lol, would've liked to be its friend instead. Awesome entry!!
The art and music for this game are perf. Would enjoy a music and sfx volume slider. The gameplay loop is pretty easy to understand and enjoyable. I loved consuming the little worms and other animals. Unfortunately I couldn't see anything in too great of detail because the game was a bit too small on my screen so I had to really zoom in my browser. The controls and movements also felt a bit too slow? Otherwise I love this cute as hell game and can't wait to see the updates because it feels like a lot of fun.
Very cute game! Love the take on the theme. I love you gotta figure out what's food and what's not, similar to how they probably do it in the wild. Good job!
Cute (and scary) hedgehog! Love the game quite a lot! It certainly has a special charm to it. This reminds me of that old game where you are a fish eating larger fish, but just more stylish and diverse. I do think that while both attack and defence animations look really nice, it's a bit on the slow side and it does break the flow quite a bit, especially the attack animation. It doesn't help with the fact that the attack range is quite low, with no way to intuitively get the attack timing and thus perform a no-hit attack, it isn't really worth to try and attack enemies. Which in my mind is a shame. But anyway, the game is quite nice and I'd say you've done a great job!
Thanks so much Kevin! I know the Attacks are a big problem, so when I play the game, I mainly snack myself across the buffet and just defend xD Thanks for the feedback! <3
Its adorable, you did a great job! Its fun to play though sometimes a bit unforgiving but thats part of it. It was a pleasure playing through it!
The art style is really cute! I love all the little animations of the animals too! ♥
ahahah, i love it. I remember seeing all the variants of the background and leaves, and I'm glad this one was picked- the purple with the oranges and browns is a stellar combo. The animations add so much charm.
It took me a bit to understand what the level system entailed. Initially I thought it'd be like a roguelike to pick skills, but then it hit me that the portraits were actually the animals that I could currently consume, and then everything clicked!
The pixel art is really well done and all of the animals have wonderful animations that make them stick out from one another. The ferret animation felt super accurate!
Enemies can sometimes get stuck around you/on you while trying to eat you, which can be a bit of a hassle, as during these situations you kinda have to just sit there and defend to avoid getting damaged. It can take a bit of time for them to be able to leave, especially when there's a lot of animals around.
I didn't really use the actual attack button, so I only ran and defended when needed. The hedgehog's eating range is very generous and lets you c o n s u m e from further away that I expected, which made it quite nice to devour more than one animal in a single bite. This hedgehog is an absolute menace, by the way.
The sound effects are very well picked and the game has a really good sense of atmosphere and ambientation. I felt quite immersed in this forest! The music is also really enjoyable and continues to be enjoyable throughout the experience. It doesn't really feel like it overstays its welcome.
Safe to say, that badger had nothing on us. I enjoyed this a lot. Good game!
Hehe hedgehog goes *Gulp*
Thanks for playing! <3
The art was nice! fun little game! I was bad at it lmao. Felt cozy though, great entry overall!
Thank you for giving it a try! You aren't bad at it, it's pretty hard. Managed to beat it once xD
it was cute! I liked it a lot!
This game was so cute!! I love the art, I love the almost... feeding frenzy/tasty planet/katamari vibes of the mechanic. Its a fun little take on the You are the weapon theme. I think making the interactable objects pop some how, with an outline, or something would be good, I didn't even notice the worms and snails at first but I got the hang of it. I'd also say I wish there was more feedback when you take damage. But overall this game is awesome!!!
Thank you for taking the time playing it <3 we also feel like the damage needs more padazz. Like a flash or something over the sprite but alas, that has to wait for after the gamejam. xD
very fun and omg those snakes xD! i was so focused and they make me run so fast. love the art :D
For a first time pixel art venture, you guys sure know what you're doing O_O! The hedgehog is a terrific character that makes me very sad for letting him die so many times :') , the art itself is very readable, and honestly with pixelart, that is one of the main things you should prioritise so you guys did great! :D
Thanks a bunch for the defend knowledge, because it let me keep Hedgehog boi alive a good bit longer than usual :')!
Awesome work, keep it up! ^w^
The hedgehog is super cute and the art is overall very pleasant. I am keep dying to the snakes though. There's usually few of them and they do not seem to be giving up even after a long chase. During my last run I got stuck on a snail which I didn't expect to have a collision. But I'd love to play more of this. One last thing: I had to switch browsers for this one because my chrome was lagging way too much.
Thank you for your sweet comment! The snakes never stop chasing. The only way to survive is to keep running away to look for rats to eat or stay and defend. Keep it pressed until they attacked, then they lose interest for a short period of time. Careful, though with multiple snakes - they can corner you quickly. The lag might be due to hardware acceleration but we aren't sure about this one. We also have hick-ups on Opera. But thank you very much for testing out our first ever game!
