Judge feedback

Judge feedback is anonymous.

  • The game is good and I enjoyed it. It fits the theme well with you being the Virus. The audio fits with the artstyle and the theme of what you want the game to be. The different "enemies" are cool and the game could definitely be something more, I would love to see the progress you make!

Yes

Summarise your game!
In CTRL ALT Defeat, You are a payload living in the clouds of Googleplex. All of a sudden a digital apocalypse unfolds! Pickle-Rick-Rollers have flooded the clouds. Microshock Defenders have been deployed to Ctrl+Alt+Delete any virus, that includes you! You must survive by hacking these Microshock Defenders, wielding their antivirus bit bullets, byte bombs, and self-destructing bodies to destroy the infamous Pickle-Rick-Rolls before they take you down.

Please explain how your game fits the theme:
As a payload in the digital apocalypse, you cannot fight directly with the Pickle-Rick-Rolls. The Microshock Defenders are kinda bad at their Job. Become the weapon and help them eliminate their primary objective. Maybe they will leave you in peace once all the Pickle-Rick-Rolls are defeated.

Is there anything you'd like the judges to pay particular attention to?
Any feedback on the wave system and the balancing would be nice

Congrats on completing the jam! This is a fun little game!

The art was clear on the enemies, bullets and different machines you could use. I think that the pixel art could be improved by avoiding pillow shading on most of the assets. The music was good and I liked the different BGM per run. Themeing we nice ;) I liked the could, bit and byte jokes.

Unfortunately I don't quite get the pickle rick joke. I am old.

Other areas that could be improved:

  • The alt key being used for the tank is awkward with the wasd controls. One hand is on the mouse and the other is on WASD. Alt cannot be pressed without moving the hand strangely and giving up the S key. Would recommend moving to the CTRL key instead.
  • It was hard to find the Pickles and my time as a robot came to an end before I could find them. Would be nice to have an indicator off screen for pickles when in robot mode and robots when not in robot mode.
  • It would be nice if being in the tank healed you. Right now when you lose health you can't regain it.
  • Robots fire the bullets but as you approach them you tend to get shot so it's quite dangerous to do so. Would be nice if if you were in range they would stop shooting.
  • Pickles themselves as enemies don't actually do anything - could just wait them out. Maybe they should do pulsating ring blasts every once and a while so you don't want them to have a bunch spawned?
  • I think the spawn speed for the pickles could be increased

Otherwise great job!

Nice work. Cool music and I enjoyed the take-over mechanic. I was not able to defeat all 100...haha. It would be nice if you could manually detonate the bombs by a mouse-click or something instead of having to wait for the timeout.

Developer

Definitely did not do a good job at showing it but you actually can with ALT since the game is ctrl ALT delete haha. I think we put it in the game doc and how to play it was added last minute because I thought the same exact thing. (Fun fact) if you mash ALT there is a bug where you can explode as many times as you want when in the tank robot. Thanks for playing!

Great sound effects. The sound effect played when taking over a new host was great. Tons of viruses, I don't think I would have a hope of clearing out 100 viruses.

Developer

You will be pickle rick rolled for eternity untill you clear all 100 pickles! Haha thanks for playing

Interesting mechanic of taking over someone and good theme idea. Good job.

Developer

Thank you!

Cool game! I wish the weapons lasted a bit longer however because I would spend a bit of time trying to find where that cheeky pickle may be hiding haha
Music is fantastic!

Developer(+1)

Just wanna say love your game! Yes definitely agree balancing was the last thing we worked on as we panicked a lot on mechanics and bug fixes/touch ups. Hopefully we can balance this out sometime so killing pickles is more addictive!

Aw shucks, Thanks Landon! Haha

Yeah pacing mechanics and gameplay can be quite the tough juggle, Especially when it comes down to balance!

I'll add to my collection of post jam views - keen to see you take it further!

Developer

Thanks for playing!

This was a fun game. Enjoyed the visuals and music thought he music would glitch out weirdly every so often. I am not very good at these types of games so I only ever got down to 80 virus remaining. Fun theme, fun game, good job.

I hope you had a lot of fun with this jam and learned a whole lot!

Developer

Definitely I had to learn the engine day 4 into the Jam, we originally had unity as our main option but found Godot to be easier for our main guy. As for the music I think that's a WebGL issue. Thanks a ton for checking it out and have a good one!

A good shooter game that has a good main mechanic. The hijack creates a good balance of risk and reward but without any way to heal any mistake is detrimental. I only was able to get to 3 viruses left.

Developer

Thanks for playing! A way to heal will definitely be implemented in the future. Possibly a medbot or something 🤔.

The dodging of enemies while trying to hijack them is definitely fun, good job!

Developer

Thank you!

Fun game and cool idea for the theme! I think some more strategic choices would be nice, e.g. if there would be some enemies who can only be hurt be a certain type of weapon or a robot who is much faster and allows you to move quicker when looking for a robot/enemy. But good job!

Developer

Thanks for playing! Legit both those ideas where on our ideas list. Life just got a bit busy to implement them in time.

I really like this interpretation of the theme! Very fun to hack into different robots. Someone mentioned it below but I also had a bug where I couldn't possess some robots. Would also be great if the Ricks spawned in higher numbers so there was more constant action and the self destruct would be more satisfying. But overall, great job!

Developer

Thanks for the feedback, could the unpossessable robots possibly be the ones hacked by the pickles? (They grow a little hair when they are hacked by pickles and it can happen offscreen). We definitely need another indicator or mention it in the how to play. Definitely agree more Ricks would be awesome but balancing was saved for the last day and we panicked lol! We also found too many pickles at once could lead to all the robots being possessed by pickles at once and therefore REALLY hard to progress. Thanks again!

Cool game! I like the idea of needing to get close and take over the robots while dodging their attacks. Also enjoyed the music

Developer

thx for playing

Developer

Thanks for checking it out!

very interesting idea! I like that different enemy has different way to attack. One thing I noticed is sometimes I move to an enemy but nothing happens, is there a cooldown for possessing or what?

would like to see more kinds of enemies to possess!

Developer

Thanks for checking it out! Although a cooldown for possessing/hacking was a idea we had for some time, we didn't incorporate it. It's most likely a bug 🐛. Was running into robots just not working some times? I'd love to try and recreate it and patch that. Thanks again!
