Judge feedback

Judge feedback is anonymous.

  • This is a super great idea! I feel like this fits the theme really well, and is a funny twist that isn't something I would expect from the theme name. The sound design was really nice, it really helped sell the movement of the knife as it was clanging around on the floor. The knife physics felt quite good! I think at some points I would jump higher than others (when I was stuck into a piece of wood I believe) which felt a bit strange/arbitrary. It felt a touch frustrating that I couldn't aim my mouse to look up very far, it felt like I should be able to look all around and maybe lob into the air a bit. Though that is more of a minor thing. I think one thing that could really help is to put more emphasis on the water sections. It took me quite a while to figure out that the evidence was getting washed off because I was in the water, I thought it was just because I touched the ground. If maybe the visuals gave some feedback when I was in the water and there was a sound effect of splashing, that would help sell one of the main mechanics of the game. Otherwise, I enjoyed stabbing my way through the game and exploring the environment! Really solid entry and great idea!

Have you checked that your GDD is publicly accessible ?
Yes

Is your game set to public on itch.io so we can see it?
Yes

Summarise your game!
Anonymous Tip is a 3D platformer where you play as a knife used as a murder weapon. Bring the killer to justice by using awkward & challenging physics based movement to get to the courthouse and turn yourself in with your evidence intact.

Press [TAB] to Pause. Quickly reload your Last Checkpoint while Paused, or at Game Over, by pressing [R].

Hold [WASD] keys to begin rolling, press [SPACEBAR] to Jump, press [SPACEBAR] midair to Launch yourself & Stab into wood. Move the Mouse to control the camera, and aim your Launch.

Please explain how your game fits the theme:
Instead of playing as a weapon enacting violence you play as a weapon reacting to the violence and bringing the perpetrator to justice.

Is there anything you'd like the judges to pay particular attention to?
The largest design challenge we found was balancing the lack of control with satisfying platforming gameplay. The game is inspired by “I Am Bread” but we didn’t want to stray too far into ‘Rage Game’ territory. We would really appreciate any feedback about the balance of player movement control and constructive criticism to improve it.

Congrats on finishing the jam!

I enjoyed it. The jump and stab felt really nice, but it was sometimes hard to see where to go. I had some issues with the camera not spinning and I couldn't see around myself - may be a limitation of the web browser. I really enjoyed the name of the game - gave me a good chuckle with the puns ;)

Some other feedback is that the water was difficult to see and sometimes the jump would send me flying ahead of where I wanted to go (and landing in water). I got stuck a few times on level collision and had to reload from the checkpoint. Whenever a checkpoint was reached there was a big spike in lag.

Otherwise the art was nice, you definitely hit what you wanted to with the semi-realism. I liked the graffiti on the walls giving directions and making jokes. I feel like the choice to use less realistic audio was a good move, however I feel like more ambient noises (for example landing in a puddle) would help (especially since the puddles are the key thing to avoid).

Great job!

Who knew that moving around as a blade is hard, i did not, but now i do.

The game has some gaps here and there where you can get between obstacles and have a hard time getting out.

The ending is a little bit anticlimactic, but its a game jam game, so thats fine xD

Sounds were implemented well. I did have the game stutter a few times, not sure if this was when hitting a checkpoint but it was at very specific locations.

Overall a fun little game, well done.

Developer

Hey thanks for checking out the game! Glad you had a good time and thanks for the kind words.

Absolutely agree about the ending, we originally had a little bit more in mind but then realized we only had two weeks lol.

You're spot on about the checkpoints, I made the poor web browser recalculate lighting every time a new checkpoint is triggered, because I was obsessed with the idea of the checkpoint lights turning on to indicate progress lol. Hope it didn't mess up your gameplay too much.

Amazing game! i had a few troubles with the controlls in the beginning but it all settled eventually!the graphics are amazing  good job~ :3

Developer

:Glad you wrangled the controls and were able to enjoy yourself. Thank you so much for the kind words regarding the graphics when I told the artist/modeler they said: 'awe shucks'

I love this premise!! The controls took awhile for me to get used to but it was really fun once I got the hang of it! The level of polish and graphics for a game jam is astounding - awesome work.

Developer

Really appreciate you taking the time to check out our game and the kind words. The learning curve with figuring out the movement transitioning into a fun time is exactly the experience we were hoping, so glad you had fun!

Wow this was so much fun! It took me a long time to figure out how everything worked exactly and why my evidence was going down, so maybe some kind of tutorial/introduction would make that a little bit better. But this was an awesome idea. Once you get the movement down it's actually a lot of fun flying around as the knife. The press R to load last checkpoint I think only works if you are on the ground? I made it to the very end and got stuck in the fire escape somehow wedged between the railing and the stairs, so I think the game thought I was still in the air and pressing R at that point did nothing so that was unfortunate. But this is a really great idea and very fun to play, great job!

Thanks so much for checking out our game! Sorry to hear about getting stuck. You should be able to reload at any time if you've paused the game using the [TAB] key first. I agree about the tutorial - realized a little too late we were a little too subtle about avoiding water. Thanks again for playing!

Amazing take on the theme, really fun gameplay- reminiscent of a getting over it style game but also I am bread like you said-  Had me completely absorbed. I had gotten pretty low on health early on, so the margin for error became very slim, and I also managed to get the knife stuck inside of the slots on the fire escapes!

Developer

Haha thanks for taking the time to play and give feedback. Both those things happened to me more than once while playtesting lol.

Hilarious concept, I felt like the ghost of the victim haha

Took me a little bit to get acclimated to the controls but I got there. Good job on the level design! Took me a while to realize the water was an hazard, some more feeback you're getting "hurt" would`ve been nice. But other than that good atmosphere, audio and visual polish. A sensitivity setting would also be important for next time, but I managed with thrid party software cause it`s often neglected in game jams.

Well done, and looking forward to what you guys do next!

Developer

Glad you enjoyed it and thanks so much for taking time to play our game and give us feedback. We'll definitely add some better visual feedback when your Evidence is harmed - that's a really good idea!

We did add a way to tweak the sensitivity setting in the settings menu, but you're not the only one who missed it. Sounds like we need to call attention to it too.

love how much polished the game is in terms of modelling and texturing
The checkpoint system is really convenient and i love how its diagetically implemented as graffiti.
really captures the spirit of games like "I am bread".
cant think of many suggestions for improvement aside from the skill jump where you have to bounce from a mattress to a pallet.
couldnt beat the game from there sadly.
maybe a little city ambience.
that aside, this is one of the best entries ive seen so far.

Developer(+1)

Wow thanks so much for the kind words and the feedback about audio balancing. We were back and fourth on the ambience so that's good to know.

Really liked the idea of the game!

I had some trouble getting used to the low sensitivity at first, but once I adjusted, I nailed it!

I also clipped through walls a few times at the beginning, but after that, everything worked fine.

Overall, a really good game with a great concept!

Thanks so much for the kind words, glad you like it!

Hi Strawberry, looked forward to giving your game a go. As you've mentioned there are issues on MAC. I hope to retry at my Windows PC later today!

Developer

Hey Orange, hope you get a chance to play. It seems to perform best on Windows using Google Chrome.

Submitted(+1)

I finally got to play this! Chrome works on Mac, Firefox didn't work on either Mac or Windows.

In any case, glad I did, this was truly a unique take on "you are the weapon". I found the controls a little bit tricky to get to grips with but it was fantastic once I started moving — albeit the idea of a knife flying through the air is terrifying.

Really well done mate! Great work!

The sensitivity of the mouse movement is very very low for me. Makes it very hard to aim. Tho i did get the knife stuck in the first piece of wood and got over it. That felt really nice. Perhaps it's the web format that is throwing my mouse off! The graphics are good too! Really nice job!

Developer (1 edit)

Thanks for playing! Were you able to adjust the sensitivity at all in the settings menu in the pause screen?

Submitted(+1)

Ahh that helps a lot! Felt much smoother getting over the first two hurdles. But i eventually got stuck in a loop of "Your Evidence Has been washed away" kept popping up after 1 or 2 jumps.

Developer

Oh wow weird, was the meter actually empty and/or were you in water? Never saw that one during our playtesting lol

Submitted(+1)

I was going down an alleyway with not much stuff in it and got the screen. then tried to reload check point. then tried to restart level. Something like that...

Developer (1 edit)

Been testing but we can't seem to recreate the issue. Can you let me know what operating system and web browser you're using - and their version numbers? That would help a lot in fixing it.
