Correlation to theme
For the story, I imagined a giant diplodocus carrying a village on its back. To achieve a prehistoric sound, I opted for archaic sounds such as the flute, congas and xylophone. And I banned instruments made of metal (I almost succeeded, as there is a tambourine). Harmonically, I wanted something joyful, so I composed in G myxolydian.

This is one of my absolute favorites! I love how you transition from your main theme to that little aside at :25 by removing the percussion entirely and letting the xylophone take over completely. I also really appreciate that you add that higher pitched counter melody/harmony in the xylophone when you restate your main theme at :35 to add a new element to that section, instead of just repeating the first section again with no new material. Those types of little details are what keep a looping video game track sounding fresh after listening to it repeat over and over again.
There's a real clarity to your arrangement and overall mix that feels very professionally done. The orchestration is nice and sparse, and the music feels like it has room to breathe and isn't too cluttered. Also, that pan flute sound is great! What plugin did you use for that?
Overall, I absolutely love this piece. Excellent work!
I must say it's extremely pleasing when someone takes the time to notice the little details I've put in.
Yes, I took pleasure in making little variations on the harmony and melody on the cover.
Thank you very much for your detailed comment (and for the compliment on the professional quality, it's always a pleasure to read).
As for the flute, I'll take a look at it and let you know.
Is nice to see a song that inmerses you almost inmediately in the correct mood. Everything you wanted to provoke with the instrument selection and SFXs 120% achieved! Excellent job :D love it!
Thank you very much :)
I hesitated to make a very happy melody, I was not sure that fits the theme. I’m happy you think my music had the right mood.
I saved you and Blue Lava for last. As usual, your song just got everything a song needs:
-you got multiple sections, to counter repetitiveness (0:00 to 0:53, and 0:53 to 1:29);
-you got good mastering: all instruments sound great and are not too loud/soft etc.;
-you nailed the theme by the percussion, xylophone and flutes (that I heard other entries use as well!);
-you got an interesting composition (chord progressions, instrument build-up), to counter boredom;
-you got interesting quirks that make the song special (e.g. the bird (0:43) and 'woo - ahoo' (0:30+0:33) sounds on the beat).
You just got everything! Lovely as always, amazing job <3
I don't even know what to say.
Thanks so much, as always, your comment is the most anticipated and always makes me so happy.
It's great to have a jam buddy. I don't know how many we've done together, but we've passed the ten mark.
I'm sure we'll meet again at OST Composing Jam #6.
I loved this one! The instrumentation, the chord progressions, all the sound effects, everything is just too good and hits so well with the theme. Definitely one of my favorites so far, great job!
I’m happy you liked the chord progression, because the part with the flutes is pretty unconventional.
Thank you for your comment :)
I think in that main song the instrument choice and vocals are really well done, it's very much like the exact type of vibe that pops into my head when I think of "Dinosaur Town". Really well done too.
InkShop is a great shop theme, and Octoburg is very floaty and uplifting. I get heavy Ocarina of Time and Mario 64 vibes respectively. Melty Vanilla is my personal fav, it's very playful and has that kind of merry go round/carnival cadence.
I think all of these tracks are great "Video Game" music in that they would fit really well into the structure of a game and provide a really evocative ambiance that works with exploring and playing rather than distracting from it, if that makes sense.
Wow ! Thank you so much for your comment. You take the time to listen all the five tracks.
I'm very happy. I spent my childhood in front of Zelda, Secret of Mana, Final Fantasy and so on.
I find it hard to think and compose music outside the "video game" scope. I'm really delighted with your feedback. I hope you'll take part in the next jam.
It sounds great, really as it progresses all the instruments are in harmony and transmit that vibe of entering a town for the first time and that music gives you a hint about what you are going to find
Thank you. I’m really happy that the music conveys so much information about this fictive town :)
The composition and choice of instruments are really judicious, as is the mix.
I like the background ambience in the panorama, it's a real pleasure to listen to your music.
Aaaaouh!
Thank you!
You’re the second one to talk about choice/decision. I flattered to see that my music sounds like a succession of good choices.
I really appreciate your comment.
Aaaaouh !
A lot of great musical decisions and writing this piece. I can visualize the town very well, and I love the subtle bird/animal noises in the background.
Thank you. It’s interesting to use the term « decision » and you’re right, we take a lot of different decisions when we compose. It appears to me most clearly during the mix phase.
Awesome work!
I like the cavemen that appear in one part of the song.
The song also sets a really cool atmosphere.
Thank you very much. I’m pretty proud of the cavemen cry :)
clever idea and fun track to listen to
Thank you, I appreciate you take the time to listen my music and let a comment :)
Jeez this is great. The vocal samples are excellently placed, including my main man the red-tailed hawk.
Thanks, I was very happy to have found those samples and that it gave that effect (it's not always easy to transcribe what's in your head).
And for the bird sound, I took a random sample. Thanks for telling me it's a red-tailed hawk !
Your instrument choices are wonderful and the ambience adds a ton to the feel of being in a prehistoric game. The melody is memorable and would fit really well in a Nintendo dinosaur town. I like the subdued feel of the music - it tells me that the dinosaurs in your town are gentle giants! As always, stunning work. Thank you for sharing!
Thank you so much
Your comment means a lot to me. For the subdued side, I always try to find the balance between interesting melody while avoiding the "in your face" side that wouldn't fit with city music where the loop could be heard a score of times. Thank you for noticing this :)
those tracks are too in my top 5. The instruments, the sounds, and the composition made a good balance between the concept of the game, and the aesthetics. Good Job, funny, and an extra point, I like the mix.
Thank you for your comment :)
I've been paying a lot more attention to the quality of the mix lately. I'm glad you compliment this point.
