I think this is a very interesting idea but, as it is now, it is very confusing and leads you to just copy the other player a lot because you are not able to plan ahead. I think that it could be cool to make the board asynchronous, so having the pieces in random spots from each other on each side like the game 'Really Bad Chess'. Another thing that could be helpful is to have half of your pieces be your "native" units where you know how they move. This would also give the feeling of humans that got some alien weapons but don't know what they do yet. You may also want to consider less movement that is jumpy, like the knight, and more slidey like the other pieces in Chess.

I really like the native piece idea - maybe the player can bring some of their own pieces to the game that Alien has to learn... Thanks for playing!

A great concept.

Had a small bug where I couldn't start a new match but it was fixed when I reloaded the page. And you can get softlocked when you can't move any more pieces.

Would like to see some more interesting Chess rules in there like upgrading pieces that get to the other side.

Wow!!! A really unique idea that's really polished for such a short amount of time. An interesting take on the theme where you learn more moves as you go, it allowed for a really cool board game.

Pretty fun idea! Each new match keeps you guessing instead of losing once and learning the mechanics. Nice idea!

I love any game that puts a new spin on an existing game like chess. I very much enjoyed this one. I hope you'll check out my game too.

I'm impressed you made this in 3 days. Great job. I imagine a chess AI is not too easy so really good work to have a playable game here! I think the game could benefit from some more sound effects and animations, but overall I liked it!

You had me at chess! Cool concept overall, always looking to try out new variants of the game.

A fellow chess game :)!

Fun concept. Also that you need to learn the moves of the pieces before you can really go for the win.

The selection spin animation I liked too. The AI (just as in my game ;) ) would benefit with an upgrade to make it a bit smarter to make the challenge even more fun. Also some audio/sfx would be a bonus for the game to make it even more polished. But is already a polished game as it is.

For the time you had with this jam it is a really nice development.

Enjoyed playing it and learning all the moves and trying to beat the AI.

I like the idea of a new type of chess. But I didn't really understand what all the different buttons did, except the pawn. Overall cool game!

Wow ranomized chess :D I like the idea, I could imagine writing a good AI for this game would be a nice challenge CODE BULLET!?

Developer(+1)

I used the same algorithm he did! Except I repurposed it for my game... and somehow made it worse :P

I like your concept, the game was just a a little hard to play when your not used to how the pieces move. Still fun though.

This is a really interesting concept. UI / UX can be a bit changed; but it is a jam game, so it doesn't matter. Also the AI seems reaaaaly random :)

Enjoyed it a lot. Great job!

Here is my rating

An excellent idea, very creative! The game is quite polished as well.

Interesting game.

Very clever concept! Took a little while to understand, and I wish there had been some music to set the vibe, but very impressive to have a reasonably functional AI working in 72 hours. :D

Creative take on the classic chess game :D It was really fun playing this. You should port this to mobile with better ai i can see myself playing this on my phone :d Overall really creative game well done :D

Note: I would be happy if you could check out my game as well :d

This is such a great concept. I could see a lot of potential with a randomized chess game, especially if multiplayer (of course the mechanic of learning moves would have to be tweaked a bit). Like other people have said, the AI quite weird; it should prioritize the king over anything else, but it doesn't. Once the king could move vertically and it heroically charged straight in front of mine... Overall, a really cool idea for a game!

Loved it! This is one of the most innovative takes on the theme I've seen yet.

How is the AI implemented? It's the biggest weak point, but obviously implementing AI at all is a tall order in such a short jam, so I'm curious.

I appreciated the attention put into the game page. The fact that the page background and the game background merge into each other was very pleasing.

Haha thanks! The AI uses a minimax algorithm inspired by this Sebastian Lague video:

But it's only at a depth of 3 (meaning it sees three moves into the future) and it only evaluates the position based on piece values rather than piece activity, king danger, etc. Basically, it thinks incredibly short-term and will throw its king away to gain a quick advantage.

Veeeery interesting concept - fits the theme extremelly well! Art and sound was also really well made!

My only complaint is the AI - it feels extremely dumb and the only way to lose is to just play dumb yourself. Of course I'm aware how hard it is to create an actually inteligent chess AI, so imo you're perfectly justified :)

I would really love to play this game with more advanced AI (and maybe some additional, more advanced randomized rules?). One of the most creative entries so far!

Developer

The AI plays almost WORSE than if I'd just had it play random moves haha. But I'm glad that you enjoyed the proof of concept!

Veery cool concept, nice graphics. The AI is also very impressive because you did it in this short amount of time, I once did a chess ai and it took me weeks, of course this one is kinda dumb sometimes, but 3 days, holy shit!

Developer

It is pretty embarrassing to admit that the AI took me 2/3 of the jam, and was especially challenging considering I'd never done one before (or really worked with AI in general) hahaha. Thanks for playing!
