wasn't clear to me what the difference between red and blue crabs were at the beginning. It only clicked after i started consuming blue crabs much like how Neo had to make choices. Boy did I choose the wrong one because i thought consuming blue crabs was the win condition. Didn't know that maxing out the mutation gauge was a fail condition.

It was stressful in the beginning when I had like 30% stamina left at the beginning and baby crabs were still stomping halfway down the beach ready to be mowed down by my claws Juno beach-style.

I accidentally clicked on a power upgrade because maxing out a mutation bar was too quick. It would be nice to include a brief 1 second delay to prevent misclicks.

The framing about a mommy bear eating babies felt a bit overkill... but it was a fun game - tough to play on my laptop. But otherwise quite fun :D

I also felt like the crab moved quite slow - what might've been interesting is if you used the mouse / trackpad for side-to-side motion; and the mouse buttons for clicks. Would've made it more accessible for those of us who type quite slowly.

I think you meant mommy crab ;)

any game about crabs is a good game. well done

I think I just played a crab eugenics game. I also had fun, which might be even more concerning.

The "losing to progress" aspect is pretty interesting in regards to upgrades. I also really like where you took inspiration from. It's funny and weird and great when thrown into a short game.

Some sounds + beach ambience would really improve the experience. There's a bit of an "Oh, come on" zone right next to the crab where I felt like it could have moved its arm back just a little bit to catch a mutated crab that I didn't want going through. I think my crab has a mindset problem. it just needs to believe in itself a little more.

Visuals are cute, I like them especially on the baby crabs.

You did! Haha.

There's a bit of an "Oh, come on" zone right next to the crab where I felt like it could have moved its arm back just a little bit to catch a mutated crab that I didn't want going through.

It's funny you mention that because the attack animation intentionally swings back first before swinging forward to help the players grab that crab that was almost past you. Perhaps, I wasn't too generous!

The crab just needs to do a little more stretching before it goes cannibalizing younglings for the day ; )

Cheers!

simple and potentially addictive.

Nice concept and very well made - really enjoyed playing this... Nice use of upgrades and power ups :)

The running out of energy was kind of abrupt, didn't really know what happened the 1st time.

Entertaining & enjoyable game - great job!

Developer

Hi, thanks! It's my first game ever and I obviously did not telegraph events clearly. I am hoping to add a non-intrusive hint system and make it more obvious when things are going badly for the player.

such is the evolution.

nice game, although it seems pretty hard to lose given the baby crabs are everywhere

Great concept, implementation of the theme and a fun game overall! The powerups (especially sand quake) give you a lot more control and are very satisfying.

Developer(+1)

Thanks! Unfortunately, I ran out of time and couldn't add a visual effect for sand quake. So, you have to simply imagine a wave going out for now.

Neat little idea, the way the blue crabs spawn feels unfair, when it's impossible to reach all of them, it feels like the game just says "oh well, take a bit of damage", there's no way for the player to use their skill to beat that situation. Also, is there a reason to not eat the baby crabs? After a bit I realised the best strategy is to just keep swinging both arms constantly, then there's no way to lose energy and you'll get the blue crabs anyway. Overall pretty cool game.

Developer

Thanks for the feedback! I did debate over whether I should improve the spawning logic for the crabs. I did make the special moves (dash / sand quake) specifically to address that -- if you miss a blue crab because it was on the other side of the screen, you might be more likely to pick dash which negates that. You are correct that the energy mechanics are too easy right now.

Cute game, I liked the crab animations

Very cute game! The gameplay is enjoyable and has no real issue : even if it's practically impossible to catch all the blue crabs, but it's well balanced with increasing abilities. Even the graphics are pretty good to be honest, it works well with your game. It lacks some music and sound effects but I can't really blame you for that since I didn't put much effort into that either for my game.

Fun Game! Nice powerups.
I would have maybe liked an alternative for using the mouse buttons for the claws. Maybe Q and E?

Developer

This seems like a good time for me to learn how to implement customizable key bindings! Thanks for the feedback.

D: the babies! Seriously though this was a quick play but super fun. The mutations really make the gameplay and it’s unique that you get upgrades the closer you are to losing. If only there was a timer or score at the end then it would have infinite replayability in my opinion.

Bonus points for the cute crab on the banner art. Great job!

I am working on this and am excited to update the game after the jam is over (and I am allowed to update the build).

I remember seeing this on discord (and maybe I helped you name it, but it's very likely you thought of the name yourself). It didn't look very promising back then, but now that I played it it's a pretty cool game, the left/right click controls are a perfect fit and you managed to add plenty of features in a short time by keeping the core mechanics small, good job!

Developer

Hey Krafter! I am happy you liked the game!

I am glad to see you remember the early screenshots of the game that I shared on the discord server. I did get off to a very late start in the jam, and you are absolutely right, it definitely did not show promise at the time :D I am glad you think I was able to turn it around.

This was fun, it feels a lot like the Flash Games I used to play on new grounds as a kid! very nostalgic

Fun game about lil crab boi that mutates when he eats blue crab, The only issue was there was no objective, no other reason to keep going I like the idea of collecting the mutations, maybe the crab could lose mutations after a while or have a choice to reset them to continue to keep living or something, for some replay-ability / progression., great game!

Developer(+1)

Ah, this is great feedback. Thank you so much!
Especially since the mutation meter goes up when you don't eat a blue crab! I should think about how to best explain that in a nice non-intrusive way. You're not alone in saying this, so it is obvious a problem I should fix!

Wow, fun game! I like the simple art style. Look forward to future updates. There is potential and would be nice to have some layer of replay-ability or progression.

Submitted(+1)

Pretty fun! I think it would have been nice to have some sort of scoring system (maybe time?) so that there's some replay value and strategy.

Developer(+1)

I am happy you liked it! A progression system involving time/score/stats is in the works, so that players can get an idea of how far into a run they are, and compare different runs with each other.

Super cute! It's adorable that baby crabs flip during a sand quake!

Love it! Satisfying to play, remind me of Neopets flash games from back in the day. Art style is adorable.
