The most unusual game in this Jam. It was interesting to learn a lot about neon signs ^^

Sometimes it was difficult to make some pipes, because instead of rotating the heated part, the entire pipe rotated. Once I just reset my pipe by mistake, because the keys are very close to each other

At the end, I have collected 29/35 stars. Nice game!

Thanks for playing! Yeah, I found the research portion a lot of fun. There's lots of cool videos about neon lights in Hong Kong as well if you want to continue learning about neon lights.

We definitely want to do a post jam to iron out some of the buggy stuff. Particularly the reset pipe issue that you had. 

And that's a really nice amount of stars! Great job!

You guys did an amazing job on this!! The art and music create just the right atmosphere for the storytelling. It all comes together so well to create a heartwarming experience. The gameplay was a little tricky at first, but the learning curve made it easy to learn and get good at. The 5 star rating system was satisfying, I got 32/35 stars! The use of the "Neon" theme has got to be the best I've seen so far. You have a really great team, well done!

Choosing the family name (Lam's) was important for getting the difficulty curve right, starting off with a complex letter wouldn't have been good at all hahah.

Great game! I think the theme, music, and visuals were well integrated. I did run into a weird bug on the first level where I moved the tube and immediately bent the end on something, but other than that I thought it made for a  really great experience.

I'm curious about the bug :o When you say first level, do you mean the first level of the tutorial, or the level where you have to make the letter L ?

Hey guys! Congrats on this great game. Not comparing, but it brings me feels from "A mortician's tale". Art direction here is amazing, the colors and sounds convey the slower and meditative pace of it. Maybe I totally missed it, but I guess assigning shortcuts on the keyboard for the tools would have been a good life quality improvement. Also, for some reason, it runs really slow on my laptop. Cheers!

The shortcuts for the tools were the numbers drawn on the buttons (so 1, 2 and 3 respectively), but it might not have been super clear. As for performance, we had some performance issues in early development that I thought we had squashed, but it seems I was wrong :0. If you don't mind me asking what specs your laptop has? So that we could maybe pinpoint where the issue is.

Sure! This laptop that I ran the game is kind of an old build but it's a Core i5, 8Gb RAM, with a GPU equivalent to a GTX 650 2Gb.

Extremely well put together game with a great story and a unique mechanic that fits the theme perfectly. It clearly shows that a bunch of work was put in to this, very interested to see how you coded the bending mechanic in GMS. My only bit of minor feedback, given its a jam game, is to speed up the pace a little bit (eg during transitions and the star awards etc) as people will be playing multiple games. That said, the slower pace suits the mellow mood of the game so I'm a bit torn. Overall, brilliant job!

The bending mechanic took a lot of time to get right haha (probably the feature which took the most time overall). Since you mentioned being interested in seeing it, the code is public on github and the glass behavior is mostly contained in this object. Do be warned though, the code started out nice but became a mess as the deadline got nearer and time more scarce.
For the pacing we tried to make so if you want, you could skip any parts. Skipping the star animation the same way dialogue could have been skipped would have made perfect sense though, so if you felt it was dragged out hahah. Glad you at leasft felt it fit the mood of the game though!

This is amazing, so far the best out of the jam for me by a huge margin. It told a beautiful story along with some unique gameplay elements. Few things that could've been better:

  • The stretch tool felt janky and impossible to use. I opted out of this for all the works
  • The blowtorch should have an on/off button because it's impossible to go into small spaces when it burns everything else along the way
  • Zoom would be handy since I often grabbed wrong parts of the tube
  • I didn't understand the gas minigame but somehow got through them.

With all that said this could actually be a real commercial game if expanded more. Great job!

Could you explain a bit more in detail what trouble you had with the stretch tool? Totally agree on the blowtorch on/off, will be a consideration for the future. As for zoom, I guess most people who participated in the jam can agree that window/screen/view/camera sizes can be complicated in gms, the best we could do in the time we had was allow you to resize the window and full-screen it. A UI scale feature will definitely be a consideration for a future version though. For the gas minigame, you had to keep the red lines inside the blue zones, maybe old Yeye could have explained that better though hahah.

Thank you for very much the feedback, we plan on hopefully turning it into a free browser game if possible, so keep an eye out for that :D

I tried the stretch tool again and I guess I misunderstood it. The dialog says it's a "pull tool" so I thought you could make the glass longer by stretching it from the ends. I missed or forgot what it says about bending the glass. If you plan on extending this I would recommend having instructions available when using the tool because it's quite easy to forget what was said (like in the gas minigame).

Absolutely incredible game, the visuals looks great, the music is cool but the best part is the story, i enjoyed a lot reading the two characters interactions and the ending was the most wholesome thing i have seen in this jam, really great experience.

Awesome game, the art, music, gameplay, and story are all phenomenal. The only complaint I have is that I kept accidentally hitting the reset button while grabbing things. You might want to make it so you hold down that button to reset it. I especially loved all the text effects, very professional looking.

Ah, the reset button. Quite a few people have fallen prey to it so far sadly. Your idea is a good one, maybe some sort of thing where it has a progress bar that lights up more and more as you hold down, until it finally resets.

Can't be more in the theme than that! Nice presentation with HK context and little story. I like that it shows the actual process of making neon shapes though it was a bit tedious to make the letters!

This has an amazing vibe! Was in HK the year before Covid happened and went neon light hunting so this game brought back loads of memories!

Really nice and chill experience :) Sometimes the hitbox of the welder is too big, and it gets kinda irritating to find the right spot, but the overall idea is cool!

That was wonderful. I always love games that show the process of creation as more than just putting the right ingredients in the same place, and the melancholy start to the story really set the mood for painstakingly bending, pulling, and re-bending into the proper shape.

Thanks for the feedback! Glad the mood came across. Wanted to show the melancholy of older neon lights being taken down. Neon light making is really an artisan craft and we wanted to be able to convey that. The bending, pulling was really really hard to implement so glad it worked out!

The World War 2 / neon lights theme are unique and the instructions are straightforward. The glass bending was a unique mechanic, so it made me think outside of the box.
