Cool small little game! it didn't really click with me however. The UFO felt a little too heavy to control and getting hit while beaming up enemies felt very unintuitive for me.

This game would also fair well with a little song playing and less repetitive noises using random pitch (minor nitpick).

I do like the idea of using sugar as power. Also, the menu is super cute! great work with the UI

Developer

Thanks, the UFO is made to be a little heavy because that is how i imagined it moving.

Submitted

Solid idea! Looking at the whole 0.5 second thing, I agree with Tower Illusion: it'd be a lot better if the timing was visually conveyed somehow. Aside from that, I like the controls and the art. I could ask for a bit more precision, or slower moving bullets, but those are minor gripes. This would also go great with some music. Nice work!

Developer(+1)

Hmm, i still dont know how i would go on doing that, also i dont know how to make (good) music, for slower bullets its already easy enough to catch them, my idea is like this: You get enough sugar then you try to survive (because you can die from too much sugar). Visually they squish when they shoot and make a sound.

Submitted

Oh yeah good point, visually squishing them a bit right before they shoot to telegraph would probably work.  As for music, it's always nice to let someone else in on your projects, especially someone who knows what they're doing.

Developer(+1)

Yeah but for this project i wanna be solo i think.

The art here is very nice, crisp and clean. Everything moves along smoothly, too. The only thing I was unclear about was whether the enemies that I beamed up actually counted for or against me. Sometimes they would come in through the beam, but at the top it would go slightly outside of the beam cone shape and bonk the underside of the donut. Sometimes it seemed to be okay, and sometimes the screen would flash red. I still managed to last for a while, though! Nice work!

Developer

You have to wait 0.5 seconds while beaming, i implemented this because at the time you could gather all of them up and then just beam all of them for infinite points. Hope this makes everything clear!

Developer

I think i have to make a tutorial.

Submitted

Oh I see now. I saw your initial note about waiting, and I figured it would make sense in gameplay. Clearly I was still missing the point, haha. I actually think if you incorporated a visual element to the enemies as they are beamed up, it would solve it. For example, once you start to beam them up, they start to turn green from the bottom up, like a thermometer, and once they turn completely green, that will signal that you can touch them and collect them.  There can be a little sound that coincides with them being ready, too. If you drop them, then the color would fade and you'd have to do it again. Hope that is clear!

Developer

That is a great idea! Although i do not know how i would go on doing that, perhaps using a shader, but for now i made a tutorial, there is just a image on the itch page for now, because i cannot change the game files right now as the jam is still ongoing, but i will upload it when it allows me to! Here is the image if you wanna see it right now:

It looks like you're using Godot. The effect could potentially be achieved using a tweener and manipulating the color modulation. I'm happy to discuss or share some sample code if you would like!

Developer

Yes, but the colors will mix if i do that, i COULD make them white and THEN change their colors and also seperate the eyes, then yes i could. BUT i might (90% sure) add another enemy which will be GREEN.

Very cute style, I like the idea of a donut UFO. Simplistic gameplay, but fun!

Developer

Thank you!

Submitted

Really cute! I love the donut UFO's design; it can abduct me anytime it wants!

Developer

Thank you!

Cute idea with the donuts and sugar. I would not have counted those toppings as sugar, but they certainly are!

Developer(+1)

They are supposed to not go well with the donut, does anyone eat a donut with mustard and / or ketchup? But thank you for playing my game!

Submitted

I remember seeing this one getting made during the game making phase! i really like the ufo design, and making it partially a donut, and its meter is sugar, cute storytelling point with that.

Developer

Thank you!

Cute game. Could use a bit more variety in the enemies. Overall nice job though.

Developer

Yeah, i think i will add more enemies, but i did not have enough time, because its a game jam.

Submitted

Such a cute game! I saw you developing it in the discord you did a great job! The art of the ship and enemies are so adorable I love it haha

Developer(+1)

Thank you!

Very polished visuals and a clean gameplay loop. The sprites are all very adorable. It would be nice for there to be some form of telegraph when an enemy is about to attack so the player knows to drop them or move out of the way though since they typically just immediately hit you with no warning.

Developer

Hmm, i might look into that, perhaps a warning sign? Or maybe you have an idea.

Submitted

Either a brief flash before shooting or the bottle squashing down and then extending to shoot might be useful visuals for it.

Developer

They do have a animation, but it plays WHEN they shoot.

Submitted

Who knew mustard and ketchup goes well with donuts. Nice cute little game, good job!

Developer

Thank you! Normally i tought it does not go well with donuts, but maybe it does.

a neat little thing, i think the controls could use some work though, they feel so heavy! the gameplay was quite fun but i feel it could use some variety in enemies and interactions but overall i think you did well enough keeping in mind that it is a jam game, better to have a finished feeling game with a few enemies than a broken one with a ton. i did like how polished all the ui felt as well, really felt like a cohesive package. and the graphics were all so cute! i love how clean everything looked. great work! glad to see other people are making cute  ufo games too haha

Developer

Thank you! I think i will add more enemy types and some events, like special events, like... idk ninja party?

Submitted

The designs for the titular Donut UFO and the condiment enemies were simple, yet very charming and memorable! Great job!

Developer(+1)

Thank you! Wanted to make this project for some time, found this as an opportunity to make it.

Cool game with a fun premise and a lot of Charme!

I think it would be cool if enemies spawned from the higher shelfs as well, this way you probably wouldn’t need the “0.5 seconds” rule

Developer

I could, but that rule simulates the need of precision, to keep on holding on them, and to make it harder of course. But yeah i could make some of them go from higher up, thank you for the feedback!

Submitted

Donut UFO, can't believe I've never seen that before. Very cute graphics!

Developer

Thank you!

Submitted

it was very cool to see you develop this in the server and play the finished product, nice job!

Developer (1 edit)

Thank you! I think i will keep making changes to the game, after the jam is over.

SUGAR! My greatest enemy!

Developer

Played your game, its great!

Submitted

Sucking up enemies is fun! Would be cool if you could send them flying and hit other enemies

Check out my game? :‑P

I consider myself a god gamer but...
This game was actually kinda hard lol

Developer

Really? Then i have to make it easier. Thank you for the feedback!

That "mystery drones" mystery finally solved! Nice style
