I liked the concept! fun little game! good job!

Very cute game! I thought it fit the theme well and was a nice spin on the classic space invaders :)

My only issue would be that the first round starts super fast before the player can figure out controls. But that's not an issue on retrying :)

Adding a decor upgrade was a nice touch

Nice game, I liked the increasing difficulty of the enemies and the upgrades. I thought the particle effects for the submarine looked cool too. One tip for the pixel art, try to keep a consistent base pixel size on everything in the scene. Like for example the base pixel size on the restaurant building is huge, while the door on the shop has a tiny base pixel size. Having an inconsistent pixel size makes the art style way less cohesive looking. Great job on this tho I had a fun time playing it.

Developer

Thank you! Definitely a lesson learnt!

I think it's fun to play, although it could be improved with some sound effects and polishing the art a bit.

Good job! :D

This is very nice submission, congrats! Ruderal Ideas said exactly what I wanted to say, the delay between the storms seems to be very small, making it very tricky to chose when you are a slow picker like me hahaha.

It was also our first time with Godot, how did you feel about it? And do you plan on continuing the game after the jam?

Developer(+1)

Thanks for playing! I managed to get most of the basics thanks to Brackeys' tutorial video haha. Prior to this, I used Unity, I think Godot is well suited for these small game jams, I've yet to try it for a larger project but over time it'll only get better. I think I'll make a full version of the game based on the feedback I've received :)

I loved the retro vibe, the music and graphics were on point. The concept was really good, and I liked the details you put in!

The calm part was a bit too fast for me, and since we had the jump to storm button maybe it can be a bit longer by default :)  Also, the boat's actions may be a bit too slow (moving and shooting). Just some fine tuning needed since it's already a very fun game :D

Thanks for playing! The timer will definitely be extended if I continue working on this game :)

Pretty good top-down shooter. Upgrades kept me hooked.

Some criticism:

  • Not much enemy progression besides some boats with more HP
  • UI could use some work
Developer

Thanks for the feedback!

There were many cool details like the restaurant getting visually bigger or the transition into the storm. All the rounds had just the right difficulty. Good job!

Developer

Thank you! The restaurant getting bigger was a last minute feature before submitting haha!

Very simple yet fun! It would be nice if the "calm before the storm" was a bit longer though.

Good game design that sticks to the theme. it would be nice if it give me a little more times. A solid game. Good job

Nice game, simple but fun. I was wondering what the decor & food upgrades do, maybe it increase the income? I like the fact you brought some civilian ships & different enemy types. Good job 🎉!

Developer

Thanks, yep it increases income :)

Was hoping to add more details but ran out of time!

Fun defense game! I failed twice only because I shot civilian ship and crashed into one.

I like how it's simple and easy to learn but also not hard to master. Did survive 10 nights BTW.

Developer

Thanks for playing! Even I fail at my game sometimes haha

This is a fundamentally solid game, and I had fun with it - kudos this being your first gam jam! That storm was so smooth too, it really helped make the experience feel smoother. Some minor things I'd say to improve that could go a long way if you ever come back to this idea:

I think having some kind of small indicator of the health of each ship would especially in later stages where the visual differences between ships is not unnoticeable, but not distinct either.

I think someone said it before, but increasing the 'calm' period would also really help in the early waves.

Finally, I think some kind of meter to show when you can and can't shoot would be great. With the high initial reload times (and how it changes as you upgrade it), it would help not only with placing your shots better, but better emphasise the impact of your upgrades.

That being said, great job!

Developer

Thank you! Lots of things I wanted to add like a cannon reload animation but unfortunately ran out of time. It's been a good experience!

Fun little game, great job! A couple suggestions: I thought the 'calm' part could be a bit longer, especially in the beginning, so that the player can read the upgrades as it took me a couple waves to see what all the choices were and decide. Also, it would be great if there was some visual result and consequence within the game of upgrading the decor and food of the restaurant! Like maybe instead of losing when you fail to ward off a pirate, it decreases the amount of customers you have, and the more you upgrade your restaurant the more customers you get, and your goal is to get as many customers and make as much gold as you can! This way the focus of the gameplay is more integrated with the restaurant concept  (since currently the gameplay is just based on warding off pirates, the restaurant concept seems like a bonus/not as related)

Developer

Thanks for the suggestions! I overscoped a little but if I continue working on the game, I plan to work on those!

Mechanically sound and I like the idea although there's definitely things to improve. Asthetics are a big one. I liked your storm animation, but every sprite having different pixel sizes looks unappealing. Make sure to keep that consistent when making pixel art. You also want to add sound to different things happening in game to make it more engaging. One when you fire a cannon, upgrade your restaurant, kill an enemy etc. Other than that its a pretty good first game jam submission. Good job!

Developer

Thank you, first time using pixel art so that's great advice to take away! I left sound way too late haha so definitely something to work on!

Funny how upgrading is supposed to be calm but I gotta read everything and decide in less than 10s HAHAHAHA really interesting concept though! And extra kudos to the charming little sail blowing back and forth when I move around, nice touch!

Developer

Haha I only realised until halfway through but thought it was funny to just keep it in! Thanks!
