In what way does your game fit the theme?
Our game is 2.5D Shooter that lets you rewind time up to 10 seconds depending on your score. So instead of respawning every time from the start location, the player can go back in time and survive.

Do note if you rewind too much after you die your character will freeze if instantly killed after rewinding time. It happens when you rewind less than 10 seconds and die instantly.

Did you write most of the code yourself and made all the assets from scratch?
All the code is written by our talented programmers and all the assets are made from scratch but exclude the explosion, shotgun, explosion sound effect, bullet impact, and skybox assets.

This is pretty impressive for a week long game jam. The art style and wall text really added to the experience.  Got to admit that I still haven't gotten very far, but it's a good game. I also have to say I didn't find the rewind all that helpful, and it wasn't long enough for me to avoid my death in most cases. Still good work.

Developer

Thank you , the rewind takes some time to get used to. You have to plan ahead to use it properly and know the map layout too. Sometimes if you are in a tight spot, the rewind does not save you that is true so it does take some strategy and movement planing to play efficiently.

Submitted(+1)

Yeah ok that makes sense. I did only play it for a little bit, but good to know there was some strategy I missed.

Developer (1 edit)

Np, thank you for being honest about your playtime. The game basically goes on forever so it is pretty much the same but with more enemies in the map. So the later part is for the more hardcore fps lovers but thank you for trying out my game =D

This is a fun old school shooter :) Really nice sound and art style. I would like to see the full game of this :D

Developer (1 edit) (+1)

cool it might take a while for the full game but i will be working on updating it overtime. So stay tuned. Your game is in my list , will play it when I have some free time. Thanks for the review.

A nice retro shooter, just made me awfully motion sick for some reason.  But then again so did the old doom. So I am not faulting you for that.

If you would be so kind as to take a look at mine as well I would appreciate it a lot.

Developer

thanks you for playing , i also get motion sickness but only playing AAA stuff though like Far Cry Series or Crysis. You game is on my list so dont worry i will rate it eventually. :D

Thank you Asim, I really appreciate it.

I can already tell you that you are gonna feel lost (My fault I skipped out on the tutorial due to time constraints lol). But when you do give it a go, try and keep the furnace as full as possible (at the 'bottom' of the ship) as it will increase the efficiency of the clockwork crank (in the middle of the ship). You can hold off enemies by using the mounted weapons.

I hope you enjoy it at least a bit, I worked my ass off on it lol.

Thank you once more Asim. And happy gamejam to you further!

Hey!

The game is pure fun! I liked the visuals and the whole aesthetics of the game.

I have some suggestions, if you don't mind:

  • The rewind mechanic implemented pretty well, though it is not that necessary. I think it kinda breaks the lose condition for the player. You may add some mechanic, like in Borderlands where you have to kill the enemy that killed you to have a second chance;
  • Sometimes I was hurt by the enemy but I couldn't see it, maybe it spawned behind the walls or something like that;
  • You can push medkits and ammo if you are full;
  • More enemy types and a goal to the player would be nice. But that's for future)

Overall, great game. It got my attention just by the looks of it! Looking forward for further improvements!

Developer(+1)

I appreciate the detailed feedback. Thank you for putting it in bullet points makes it easier to read. The Borderlands mechanic sounds pretty cool I have to check it out. Also you can push the medkits and ammo when your full in game, monsters destroy the medkits so watch out for that. I will take a screenshot of you feedback and show it to my team. Thanks <3

I like first person shooters so I enjoyed this. I forgot that I had a rewind button though :/

Developer (1 edit)

Thanks for playing , I wrote the controls text on the walls in the tutorial area. The rewind text is right across the hallway from where the first door opens.

Submitted(+1)

Cool game, I like the astethics and the weapons feel nice to use. Although it has some very obvious flaws

- The texts on the walls get tedious later on, it's hard to read them all and kill enemies at the same time, this just harms the game more than it does it good

- The rewind mechanic more or less broke the game, it's more or less impossible to die because you can just rewind as soon as you get hit and get your health back

- I wish there was something "more", more enemies or different types of enemies, more levels with linear objectives so that you want to invest more time playing it (usually I like to finish jam games and not just get a highscore)

All in all I enjoyed it but I didn't feel like playing that long because there wasn't really an end to it

Game Design: 4/5

Fun: 3/5

Innovation: 2/5

Theme: 3/5 - Rewinding was in there but it didn't serve much of a purpose

Graphics: 4/5 - Reminds me of doom or wolfenstein

Audio: 4/5 - Juicy, good background music

Developer (1 edit)

Thank you! for the honest review. We will be updating the game once this jam gets done.

Overall it's a REALLY good game for being made in a week! Sound design is really good, guns are satisfying to shoot, player works fine...

I see 4 problems:

-Rewind is... not important at all? I feel like this game would be even better without it, feels like it was a struggle to put it here

-As someone said, an end to the game, i guess it's an endless run to see how much score you get, but i feel like this game would have been better with some type of ending.

-More types of enemies would have been perfect, i know, its a gamejam, but for the future maybe? :P

-This is just my problem, but sometimes i cant see the ammo and health bars, i am bad with colors, so sometimes i couldnt see them, maybe a change of colors or making them more noticable...

Overall, great job!

Developer

Thank you for outling the problems. You cannot take health and ammo if your already at maxed btw. We will release an update with some fixes once the jam is done, adding enemies and end game will take some time though but with enough interest we will make an update for that too. Thanks for playing , I will check out your game now too <3

I've never played Doom but who does not know Doom by other games, it really created the fps; you in the other hand, I think you played Doom, the original, and you are know presenting you vision of Doom the thing which is very nice. First I wanna ask: Is the goal of the game to survive as longer as you can? And know lets do the same kind of review you do to be organized:

----------------------------------------------

Things I enjoyed:

-The smooth camera, it is not too obvious how to make it as perfect, too much developpers get stuck at that.

-The atmosphere of the hell which is ponctuated by small details like the smooth and red sky that I loved too much

-The assets that seem handmade

-The well choose of the music and the good sound design

-The fact that both weapons, the shotgun and the gun, are fun and give satisfaction while shooting

--------------------------------------------

Things that need  improvement (or things i didn't like as other things):

-Graphics of ennemy? But it's a question of style

-Respawn, you should make enemies inactive for at least two seconds

-It's only one wave in the game I would prefered levels

- more types of ennemies, but okey that was a jam

-The thing that the theme isn't present. The rewind mechanic isn't that impressive or different from actual respawn

----------------------------------------------

Really good job, I really felt playing in an actual game not made only for a jam! Continue like that, I'm looking forward for a final version of this; Valar Dohaeris!

Developer (1 edit)

Thank you Jesus for playing our game. I love the fact you made such a detailed review with nice easy to read layout.

Answer to your question: Yes, it is an endless runner which basically means there is no end to the game as the player is stuck in limbo.

Our Design choices

  • We were limited by our experience and time but we did discuss doing levels but chose to go with a arena since its easier
  • Most of the assets are hand made except for the skybox, shotgun , explosion , bullet impact animation and pickups.
  • I would have hope to work with the artist more but they were afk most of the time so i had to take what i could get.
  • Rewind takes you back 10 seconds so it still lets you be in the heat of the action while not starting all over again.

We are taking a break now but will release small quality of life updates now and again after we are done collecting all the feedback. Also, glad you got that GOT reference :D. There is a God Father one as well.

This is a really cool game! I absolutely love DOOM, so I liked this immediately. The text messages are also funny, most of the time, and the gameplay is engaging.  Couple of things though, you maybe should have implemented an end to the game, because it just seems to go endless in the last part (if not, I couldn't find any way to progress), and also, your SFX slider is broken, it resets everytime I configure it. Also, maybe you could have implemented more enemy types.
Other than that, I had super much fun blasting away the demons. Well done!

Developer(+1)

I played DOOM when I was very young and the memory has stuck with me into adulthood so I'm glad you like our version of DOOM style FPS. We made it into an endless runner because we didn't have time to implement a boss. This game also definitely needs a lot more polishing as 1 week was too short for the things we wanted to implement. We are definitely looking to improve it overtime and add some quality of life changes. I will make a note of the SFX issue and we will update the game with some fixes soon.

Thank you very much for the review <3

A great game with great art. The atmosphere gives a 'hell' kinda vibe actually. the endlessness of the game makes it harder to leave but it would be better if some other game modes were added.

Developer(+1)

Thank you i will make a note of that. Will check out your game too in a bit <3

Submitted(+2)

I liked the art style, atmosphere and the kickback on the weapons. The game is overall fun however I don’t see that there is an actual end to the game, but it seems like that’s kind of the point. Correct me if I’m wrong but the game is supposed to simulate actual hell. If that’s the case the theme is really strong especially with the rewind mechanic as the death so you just have to respawn and die over and over and over again with an endless wave of enemies. I sadly did not get the joke on the wall though… lol

I noticed that the melee enemies seemed to glitch out my movement especially if there were a lot of them on me at once. Overall great job the usage of the theme is really good too.

Developer (1 edit) (+1)

Thanks for reviewing our game. Hell Gates is designed to be an endless runner where your character is trapped in limbo for eternity because of his past actions. The souls of the victims he has killed when he was alive , haunt him there. The joke is that your trapped in limbo for eternity as a punishment for your past actions. The story is a bit vague so it not very obvious when you start playing but we wanted to let the player uncover some story elements from the walls.

I will keep a note of the bug , thank you for reviewing our game <3

Submitted(+1)

The game felt nice and satisfying. It just feels thrown together for the ending though to it's just a constant wave of enemies with no goal. With how I see this game could have gone, you could have been in an ever changing labyrinth with less enemies or having waves of different types of enemies where you use the map to your advantage. Other than that, I definitely enjoyed the direction it was going!

Developer(+1)

Thank you for the feedback, I really like the tip about using map to your advantage and ever changing labyrinth. Hit me up on Discord , if you would like to join us on this project. Discord tag: invalid#8392

I'm intrigued...

This game was a good idea for the theme and I enjoyed playing it. My only criticism would be that the spawning of enemies/ items should have been in waves/ more strategic in my opinion. The numbers just kept ramping up and I never got that satisfying feeling you get when you clear a wave. Also sometimes I'd walk around a corner to see a huge pile of ammo and health stacking up in bits of the map i hadn't even been in. I think you've done a really good job with what you've managed to do so far. Id definitely play this if it was a longer game.
PS Unfortunately I didn't get the joke ;)

Developer

I had to cut a few corners to submit the game in time , i would have definitely liked to have more weapons and tweak the spawns settings alot more but there was no time since, half of our team was totally new to unity and some people refused to even open unity and I had to fill in for them. Anywho, thank you for playing the game. We appreciate the feedback and will release some quality of life changes once this jam is done.

PS: The joke is your player character is stuck in limbo because he did bad things in his previous life and is tormented by all the souls of the people he has killed when he was alive.

Submitted(+1)

Oh no I totally get the time pressures! You've done amazing with the time given (its never easy at the start with a new team, hopefully you'll all synergize better for the next one ;) ). Would be cool if the first half of the game was when you were alive and the second half is you being punished for the stuff you did in the first half. Anyway keep up the good work and i'll be sure to keep an eye out for your updates :)

Developer

Thank you, i will make a note of your feedback. Right now I'm feeling soo burned out but will eventually get around to updated it, wont be long.

Submitted(+1)

i love these type of games

(+1)

Fun to play! Love the design aswell!

Submitted(+1)

The game started out muted for me. It's a pretty close approximation of a Doom clone. Nicely done! It makes me want to try my hand at a similar style game in the future. I'm just not sure what the rewind mechanic brings to this genre.

Developer(+1)

Rewind mechanics is useful because the game is designed to be an endless runner and you wont lose all your progress if you die and its also less frustration to play with this mechanic included. I can compared our game to Devils Daggers which is also an endless runner but it gets very frustrating to play that game since there is no such quality-of-life feature and the game is for more hardcore audience.  My team and I really enjoyed implementing the feature but since most of our team consistent of first time game devs so it definitely lacks much of the polishing right now.

Submitted(+1)

No worries! I agree that it makes the game easier, but in that case, I would want the game to be crazy hard, to balance it out!

Developer(+1)

Sure, i will keep a note of your feedback.  Thank You :D

Submitted(+1)

Really amazing, so charming! thank you so much for this game, it was super super funny<3

Submitted(+1)

How u included the theme and the "doom" type of game is brilliant ,also the Music and sfx are on point haha good job!!

Submitted(+1)

Nice idea to make a doom-styled game as a "rewind". Well made, and interesting where the scream and laugh sounds come from ;)

Submitted(+2)

Such nostalgia playing a doom like.

If you like, pls also check my game: https://itch.io/jam/brackeys-4/rate/721302

Its a puzzle game that you can rewind bombs in time. Kill all your enemies using this mechanic while they interact with your bomb in unique ways

Developer

Thank you for playing, i will check yours out too and rate it. :D
