In what way does your game fit the theme?
This game fits the theme in a few ways.
1. The player character has a mind and heart meter, both need to be above 0% otherwise the player takes a damage penalty.
2. The Narrative of the game involves the main character "Paul" becoming strong enough to resist the devil through coming closer with God.
3. The Physical items, the 'Armor of God' all make the player stronger when used together.

Did you write all the code yourself and made all the assets from scratch?
All code was written by me.
Art is a customized version of the Kenny 1-bit assets.
Most music and all of the sounds are not made by me.

Here's my playthrough

Submitted(+1)

This was a great game! I only wish I had played it during the jam. I went full Faith build, still not sure what it did mechanically in this game. I noticed a few typos I figured I would list for you.

Oblivion instead of oblivian and at one point one of the demons said something about praying on someone, which is actually spelled prey not pray.  Might have been more that missed my eye. That said, I really enjoyed the splash of humor and narrative!

Developer(+1)

Thanks for the feedback! I'll try to fix those typos as soon as possible!

The faith attribute is meant to be more of a mysterious attribute and something you have to trust in to get a reward out of, kinda like real faith. Since the jam is over, mechanically it does two things, for each point it decreases the amount of health enemies spawn with and gives you a small XP multiplier. It's two things that are hard to notice but have a super big impact on the game if you invest into it.

Thanks for playing! I'm glad you enjoyed it!

Ooo, I like the way Faith works mechanically! Makes me wonder what the final boss' health would be at without any points in the stat. Though it sounds like a full Faith build was actually be a bit detrimental for my run as a more balanced build would have probably made the game a bit easier for me to get through, lol. Originally, my guess was that Faith secretly raised a multiplier for all the other stats, but I figured out that wasn't the case by the time I got to the end.

Developer(+1)

I think I considered doing the 'secretly raise all stats' at one point  but I can't exactly remember why I didn't go that route. The final's boss (as well as other bosses too) health is actually dependent on the player's damage output. No matter the build, I think it was 5 or 7 perfect attacks would kill him. I did run into issues where it was way to high to be reasonably possible so I tried to scale it like that to be more fair. I still may make some adjustments to the game going forward, did you defeat the final boss?

Submitted(+1)

I did but it took me like ten tries, as he kept taking me out in two hits. Obviously, not impossible but very difficult with the five dodges instead of three.

Submitted(+1)

Good game, it has good intentions but I felt lack of unique or different attack patterns other than hitting in the right moment. Moreover, its a bit bothersome to click with mouse instead of clicking with Spacebar, for example.

In the map where you get the boots you can go out of the map, there should be some limitation of the map so you can't get out.

But overall it's very interesting how you designed the game and put so much effort in it with all those bible lines. Cheers!

Developer(+1)

Thanks for the feedback! I've patched the out-of-bounds glitch on the boots map for the post jam version. I'll try to add spacebar as a way to use the dodge/attack minigame. I'll also play around with other variations of the minigame. I was aware it gets old but felt it was better then leaving it up to pure random chance.

Thanks for the amazing feedback!

Man, this game was amazing, i felt like i was gaming in church.

Developer

Thanks for the feedback! I was trying to go for something like that and I'm glad I got the right feeling for it!

Submitted(+1)

WOW, you crammed a lot in!  I really enjoyed this one.  The attacking and defend mechanics were pretty cool.  It's a really complete game, great job congrats.

Developer(+1)

Thanks! I put somewhere in the range of  50-60 hours into it. There are still a number of bugs I need to fix for the post-jam version but I'm super pleased with how this one turned out!

Submitted

If you get the time, please rate my game, it is WebGL and ready to tell you a story.

Developer(+1)

I have! I left a comment on your game, I really enjoyed it, I may take a lesson or two from you on how to do cutscenes.

Submitted(+1)

Nice work on the story, also I liked an option to turn off random encounters.

I wish that each bosses has some kind of unique attacks, but just my opinion. Overall, nice RPG game!

Developer

Thanks for the feedback! The bosses technically have a unique attack but in reality it's just a different description. For example the "Demon of Anxiety" will specifically attack you with loneliness and doubt. I can try to add in some specific animations to show that better for the post jam version.

Submitted(+1)

A really complete game with a unique fighting system, I liked it !

Developer

Thanks!

Submitted(+1)

Wow, this was really fun with an immersive story! It's amazing that you did all of this in only a week. My only feedback is that I feel the UI animations could be a little quicker, but that doesn't matter much.

Developer(+1)

Thanks for the feedback! UI in general is something I struggle so I'll try to fix that in the future.

Submitted(+1)

Great job on the story, the game is really well made.

Developer(+1)

Thanks! I'm super happy with how this game turned out!

Submitted(+1)

Ok, this is really fun. I'm pretty sure its tongue in cheek? The ghost attacking with 'intellectualism' really cracked me up.  Love the item collecting and some entertaining dialogue- well done.

Developer

Thanks! I tried to make all of the attacks from the enemies funny or thought provoking in some way. I'm glad you enjoyed it!

Submitted(+1)

Well done. Impressed with the story, dialogs / narrative. Really feels like normal polished RPG.

Developer

Thanks! This was my first time trying to do a narrative based game jam, so I'm happy it turned out so well!

Submitted(+1)

Wow. I am glad that I found this game. Really well done. The combat is nice and I like the option to turn down random encounters for those can be annoying.

The Storytelling is great! Good job on the intro.

The Bible Verses fit really good where they are. And I think being stronger with God is the best fit for "stronger together".

I am really impressed how much you did in the one week. This has a lot of potential.

Thanks for making this game and god bless you.

YOUR GAME HAS AN INTRO!!  Bravo on pulling me into the story ...your theme is a bit heavy handed though.  The quick time events during attacks and blocks are a nice touch!

Developer

Thanks! I really enjoyed your game too!

Submitted

Super cool game! Really impressive that you managed to flesh out the story and world this much in just a week :D If I had to change anything it would be to have the attack and dodge timing when you press the mouse button down, instead of when you are releasing it, but its a minor detail :) Awesome work! Really enjoyed it :D

Check out my game if you have a moment to spare, would love some feedback :D

Developer

That's a super good point, I'll fix that for the post jam build. Thanks for the feedback!

Submitted(+1)

"What a Bible? Where is the cool sword?"     XD  love it.
Its funny and you really created a big world in such a small amount of time!

Submitted(+1)

Wow, amazing game!

You really went and made a whole rpg game with lots of dialogue, a level up system, and items! The combat was really engaging with the real-time elements, and everything was excellently conveyed to the player.  I really liked the Mega-man esque game structure where you could go to any stage in any order and could even challenge the end boss if you wanted to. I also really appreciate the ability to turn off random encounters!

The issue with the game I had is that it is quite easy to just dodge every attack and get crits every time, so it takes some of the difficulty out of it. I'd suggest making the timing for those things a tad tighter. Also, I wish the health was shown in numbers and not percentages, because it felt like I was just randomly targeting enemies at some points since i didn't know how much health they had.

Also you can just walk through the gate and go out of bounds in the boots level.

Overall, great game! Just replace the placeholder assets and make the UI a bit more attractive and you got a really cool game on your hands!

Developer

Thanks for the feedback! I'll fix the gate in the boots level for the post-jam build. The dodge and attack system is interesting, I've had some people say it's too easy and others that it's to hard. I'll be taking a look into it. Also, the item 'the belt of truth' does change all of the health percentages to numbers. I think I may include a description for what all items do to help people pick which one to go after for the future. Thanks for all the great feedback!

Submitted(+1)

I'm of the mind that a mechanic as powerful as taking no damage on every attack should be something very difficult and not necessarily possible for every player to do. If getting the Dodge perfectly only reduced the damage, the system would be perfectly fine as is. But (what I think is, I haven't tested) an all-or-nothing system makes it so that the combat has no danger for a player who has good timing and is too punishing for a player who doesn't. Maybe it can be fixed by pushing those minimum and maximum damage values closer together.

I didn't get the belt of truth in my playthrough! I want to go back and play this game more in-depth, now j know there is a cool item to look forward to! I think if the health number is an item then the current system you have is fine

Developer

Thanks for the suggestion, I can play around with that some. Right now it's not an all-or-nothing system. Every dodge reduces damage by a set amount and every attack increases damage by a set amount. So it you dodge twice and miss 1 then you'll take 3 damage instead of 9. It you attack twice and miss one, then you deal 6 damage instead of 9. I tried to make it harder as the game goes on by shrinking the targets and adding more of them, I may have overcorrected and made the beginning way to easy though. Let me know what you think if you get around to a second playthrough!

Submitted

Not sure if you saw my other reply, but I did get around to a second playthrough (or rather continuing the first), and I think the difficulty is scaled pretty well! It is fine if it is easy in the beginning, it's introducing the mechanics to the player. Honestly I think the difficulty is perfect as-is. That was my bad for judging a game before I had played through the whole thing

Developer

Don't worry about it! I don't expect everyone who plays the game to finish it or play through the entire thing as it is a game jam. Thanks for giving it a second play!

Submitted

So I decided to come back and play some more levels, and I think the game is plenty difficult, I just wasn't going to the right places to find the difficult enemies!

Submitted(+1)

What can I say, this is perfect. Every aspect of it fits so well in its simplicity, music, mechanics and storytelling all work so well together, and the implementation of the theme is quite unique too. Props to you, you made a really good game

Developer

Thanks! I just played and rated yours! I really enjoyed all of the little touches included in your game!

Submitted(+1)

I am a fun of turn based games, and this is a good one.

The timing mechanism gives the simple turn based fights some action elements.

Submitted(+1)

Great game! the visuals are really good! well done

Submitted(+1)

Wow this game is awesome! I love the intro and the art so much, you made a very good game here.

Developer

Just played your game, it's very interesting. I enjoyed the feeling of slowly building up an army. I also enjoyed the in game tutorial. It was simple yet effective. The art was nice and the game overall felt really good.
