Starts out strong, but keeps going too long, the scares keep coming but lose potency with reuse
Amazing idea. Not really scary per say but it does give off a horror feel. Some actual inhouse monsters stalking you, maybe replace light switches with keys to extend the maze in to other rooms and some actual benefit for the flashlight and it would be an awesome game to play.
5/5 ON Theme, these type of games are the only contenders for this jam because they are scary as hell. I can barely play these types of games, I'm just scared the whole time. Why is the house setup like a maze?! It would have been better to just have it setup as a normal house, that's more scary and less annoying. I would have liked there to be more physical jump scares instead of the maze, why do people associate horror games with a maze?! That being said there's better voice overs and jump scares in this competition and the voice over at the beginning seems almost funny rather than sincerely creepy but solid work. You could have easily taken out the maze, added some jump scares in the house with ghosts or dolls or w/e and fixed the narrative with a real story other than dream and red lights and won this. This game has the most comments and the comments are huge because everyone sees the potential here but it just missed the mark in so many ways. Take some tips from Spot H9.
yea, i can see all the problems with it, most of it was rushed and made without much thought, im already planning out how to continue from this to an accual game using all your feedback.
Very atmospheric and very spooky! That being said, a lot of the scares came from the first few minutes of the game, where the sound effects are eardrum-shatteringly loud. The atmospheric effects are really cool on paper: The eyes outside the house being more prevalent and staring at you as you move through the maze of a house, the pair of eyes that randomly spawn in front of you to spook you, the idea that sounds are playing like there is someone else in the house. The volume wasn't great, and I'm not sure about the flashlight turning off and the camera shaking. Maybe if there was an end-point and these were only ramped up towards the very end and not throughout most of the experience?
But I'm not sure there's actually a win or lose condition. I had to turn down my volume in order not to go deaf, which meant the spooks weren't as scary when they occurred, mainly cause I got used to them, and now that they weren't ripping my ears apart, they were more creepy than scary. I quit after, I think, my 15th light switch?
So, off to a VERY strong start! The first 3-5 minutes had me on edge, then I quickly recognized the patterns, and the game became quite predictable. With some more work, this could be a really good game! A solid entrant, and if this was only a week's worth, I can't wait to see what you will be able to produce with more time! :)
This is going to sound a bit harsh, but it’s my honest opinion. The game could really use some subtitles, due to the variation in sound level between the voice acting and the overly-loud sound effects. It also feels like a frustrating key hunt through an annoying, repetitive maze, where the stated win-con - find the switches - doesn’t actually let you win (as far as I can tell), which breaks the internal game logic. The sound effects don’t match the environmental changes (door opening sound = table moving?)and the camera shake is motion-sickness inducing, especially at the end, when it renders the game unplayable. The jumpscares are lackluster and overused. Overall, loud noises, tedious gameplay, and an unreliable flashlight =/= horror. For a first shot at a game you produced something better than DreamWorld, so I’ll give you that.
Plenty of tension during the first minutes but the only relief for the tension was the loud noises of which I am particularly prone to jump from and seeing the floating eyes out the windows and chuckling a bit. The amount of light switches (I lost count) I went through made me question my goal only to get greeted by the games ending. The previous two games didn't have settings of any sort but this one did and included an audio slider for all sounds which was nice but the audio levels varied too much to make it matter resulting in a worse audio experience than the aforementioned two games. However for a first game this is quite a great result that could do with a bit of polish.
For a First Game Jam and no prior experience this is top tier.
More of this and you be going places.
Compressed review to one word: Amazing
Alright so in terms of horror this is definitely scary without a doubt. As for experience, the sound is really loud in some cases, the creak noise was certainly to loud. The voice acting is mediocre. Although, the game is fun to explore and has a cool plot along with nice visuals! Great work.
10/10 for the horror genre :) Some of the effects are EXTREMELY loud compared to the voiceover (which I enjoyed a lot) - definitely jump scared me! :D Maybe give some way of controlling their volumes seperately? I liked the classic concept, great work for a week's time!
noted things to chage:
-rework sounds
-screw camera shake
-add more main game mecanics
-redo ending
-redo voice acting
-flashlight no good
(this will be updated as more feedback comes in)
Planing is underway, all your feedback is being put to use.
Theme: Good intro, then kind of turned into "find the switch"
Fun: It was entertaining while the effects were low, but the intensity of some of the effects (camera, smoke, sounds) made it less enjoyable
Game Design: Good terrain layout, kinda mediocre spooks and the ending spoiled the game
The graphics are actually good and the game would be actually scary, if the voice acting and sound wasn't so terrible.
