This was surprisingly scary! The pixel art was incredible--the kid in his onesie or whatever was really cute and everything was simplified but perfectly readable. The UI prompt also really impressed me.
I have to say I personally didn't have much fun with this one--the objectives would sometimes lag behind the progress of the story, and I did die once from not knowing how to get out of the tub. I also felt like it was...very, very tight in terms of margins for error. I came to look at the comments to see if it was even completable. It was, and I did beat it, but in the end I did feel a little bit frustrated with the experience. My first instinct when asked to find a weapon, for example, was to pick up one of the hoes or shovels on the wall. One of those tools even had a little blood on it; I thought for sure that was some kind of signposting. Of course, that wasn't the correct solution.
I imagine you had that type of thing planned--more variety and choice and stuff--especially since there are apparently more endings. But a jam is what it is, and I'm very impressed that you created all of this and got it to be so spooky. Good job!
Yeah, we definitely had more plans for the game, but with this being our first full game in a week's time we couldn't really get them down lol. I'm happy you like the simple pixel art I made though :
Can't argue with the theme, it's definitely a horror game! The intro card is cool. The instructions are clear. The house isn't so big that I get lost in it. The ball is fun to kick around. And spooky enemy! I had a hard time getting the run away timing right, and I managed to double press e back into recent rooms multiple times, but nothing felt too cheap or too gimmicky, so I'm happy.
Great game!
Thanks for the review!
Excellent game jam with multiple endings and a good intertwined puzzle, with a few mechanical issues
Love the artwork, definitely on theme. It wasn't really fun though, the objectives just tell you go here go here go here and you just follow. Needs more anticipation and jump scares, I kinda just ran into the black creature and then died and I was confused.
Thank you for the review! And yes it could use a bit more anticipation and things you need to figure out regardless of the objective for sure. Glad you liked my art though!
Thanks to my own ineptitude, I managed to die twice. I had gotten the knife and was thinking I had to run upstairs and hide, but the guy got me by the ladder.
By my third run, however, the heartbeat sound effect persisted, making it feel like something was wrong. When I died then, the game froze in the main menu, and I was unable to start the game.
From what I did play, however, the game is solid! It's a simple but effective premise, that, despite its cutesy 2D art style, manages to be quite scary at times. By my third try, however, it was more of a stress-scare than a spook-scare.
I hope you'd be willing to polish the game a bit further outside of the jam and release a longer version.
We're glad you liked it! As for the bugs, this is our first game and we know there is room for improvement. Also, I like seeing that the game was scary to a third party
Cute graphical style. Sound will bug out if you die, though, or just bug in general. There is a bit of overlap between when you hit transition to another scene and the time you’re able to move around. ‘it was all a dream’ is a little cliche, but that’s alright.
Glad you liked my sprites! And yeah, it is cliche lol. We just wanted it to end somehow other than a black screen, and with the deadline we sorta just took the easy route.
Fair enough!
The graphics and atmoshphere in general are very well done - 10/10 for the horror theme. But to be honest, I haven't quite figured out what the overall objective of the game is (other than fail miserably at running away :), or if there's even a way to beat it (as the other comments suggest). Still, from a visual perspective, nively done.
First of all, thank you for your review. The game has an ending just so you know, and if you still are open to replaying it in order to beat it, run away from the monster the second it comes on screen. Again, thanks for the response!
Theme: Horror theme is there, and the style/lighting contributes to it well
Fun: A bit of a walking simulator, it didn't feel quite tense due to some walking effect sound issues. Also I wasn't clear on the game mechanics (hiding in bathtub doesn't save you from getting caught), and restarts felt punishing. Due to the timer, I assume this is a speedrunner game, so I wasn't part of the core audience.
Game Design: The pixel art was really good and the overall environment was great. Some of the issues mentioned dragged down the experience for me, and I quit after failing the game several times (last time with the bathtub). Some of the secions felt a bit too tight (running away from monster gave you no leeway in standing there, if you didn't run immediatelly you were screwed)
Overall, a good game with some minor issues that could be a nice speedrun challenge
Thanks for the feedback! during game development, we did kind of realize that it involved a lot of walking so we tried to add in some other things to spice it up a bit, but we do realize this flaw in the gameplay. The timer was put there mainly as just sort of something to use if you were going to speedup, but just note, speedrunners were not the core audience. Again thanks for the feedback and thank you for taking the time to play our game!
This game gives me "The Worlds Hardest Game" feelings for anyone who remembers that game but it doesn't feel intentional. It took me around 7 tries to finally beat the game for reasons that are out of my own control that required trial and error to figure out. The game is quite simple and linear leading to repetition every try. Simply put I feel like this game suffered from a lack of polish which could have been remedied with just a little more time. However due to it's inherent simplicity there is not much to gripe about and was satisfying to finally beat.
Thank you for the feedback! And yes we were going for that sort of challenge, as this is our first full game and we wanted to make it to have a decent amount of gameplay.
ok so, ima go in the order of the voting system, the theme was very well implemented, it has a very scary and creepy vibe, there is still room for improvements tho, the game isnt that fun becouse other than slowly walking from a to b there isnt much to do. the game design is very good, although please put all the files in one folder inside the .zip package please, also you can e objects multiple times, playing the interact sound multiple times, maybe put a check in it to make sure thats not possible. all in all solid game, well done!
