Fun game, would be an awesome mobile game <3. Kind of wished you could skip the tutorial (or the chat), the music also becomes very repetitive
It is an adorable concept with lots of potential, but the array of nasty bugs in the game makes it close to unplayable in the long run. A few problems which I detected:
Combined with the lack of game saves, losing all progress because of them is frustrating.
Still, all of this can be fixed if you do go through with the idea of making it into a full game! Do consider it!
I like the concept and the idea, but I had a few technical issues playing the game.
I was using a Chrome browser to play it.
I recorded myself playing the game: https://youtu.be/8drkxO3w6hU
Perhaps I was just unlucky. :D
Imagine if cat C1 uses a module M1 and wants to use a module M2 later. A cat C2 is using a module M2 and wants to use a module M1. I had them stuck in something like a deadlock until one of those cats needed to leave. :D All cats ended up stuck when they were about to use a module that was occupied. Maybe they can change their mind for a little bit to be more random? They could also try moving in random directions to unstuck. The player could have the ability to move a cat to fix that situation too. In any case, it feels not very natural and weird. :D
It looks like I can’t use a cat bag slot after it has been used at least once. The spot seems to be occupied even after the cat is with its bag is gone. I would also prefer a simpler system to place a bag in the storage room. I had difficulties finding the right spot to drop it: it looks easy, but the game doesn’t register many places as valid even if they look legit.
The game froze at some moment. Perhaps it had something to do with me inviting 6+ guests at the same time? The tab was reported as frozen, so it was trying to calculate something but to no avail. Maybe there is a loop in the code that can loop forever at some condition?
The controls could be made more intuitive at many places. It’s hard to move things around, perform actions.
The UI could be improved too. In the computer menu, the “buy” button doesn’t buy anything, I need to press the X button. :D That was confusing
The food bowl should visually indicate which kind of food it has. And, perhaps, give a hint what was its previous contents when you’re about to refill it.
Wow, thank so much for spending so much time on my game! I'll be sure to go watch your video. It's not just you, the game is definitely quite buggy... I spent too much time on artwork, ran out of time to playtest, and haven't had time to fix anything post-game due to college.
Cool game! Really enjoyed the art style and the animations, however, I think there are some aspects that could use a little polish. Like the text size being too small on higher resolutions, dialogue being unskippable, and certain visual bugs when going through the top door. It was also a little bit confusing figuring out what to do, but otherwise, great submission!
Making UI look good is a perpetual struggle of mine, haha. Thanks for playing and leaving feedback!
How can playing with cats be bad? NEVER! This is a wonderful game, I think everyone loves cats, everyone should definitely like this game)
Aw, thanks!
Very fun game and concept. The writing was fun and the art style is perfect. Well done!
Thank you!
Very cute artwork. Certainly a good start for a great game.
Thanks!
I love the concept! The writing stands out too—very catlike.
I found myself tripping over the mix of mouse & keyboard controls (I wanted to click to place things, or click away to close the laptop, etc), but I see you're already aware of this.
I also struggled with the pace a bit. Maybe with more time it'd be possible to have more assets/content to make the off-time easier, i.e. animations to watch (unique animations for each toy, cat-trait-specific animations for common things like using the litter box or eating, Pixie getting up to various things, outside weather, some hypnotic music visualizer wobbling in the background, etc), sound effects to spark imagination (particularly ambient ones like wind, rain, children outside, traffic, etc) and music to nod along to. The fast-forward button helped a bit (and I appreciated that the fast-forward seemed to stop when there was an arrival or departure to deal with). Another way to deal with the off-time would be to add other interactions. We could help keep the old lady fed and rested (it was a bit alarming watching the clock roll through the wee hours while she stood in place, staring at the wall—if only she could nap and trust her furry business partner or caretaking instincts to wake her should something go wrong). We could engage in idle low-stakes interactions (misting plants, maybe, or knitting cat booties, or periodically looking out the window to get a text description of what neighbors/passersby were up to). Or routine interactions go be expanded into multiple steps (maybe cleaning the litter or setting out food produces trash/recycling to put away, or putting water/food in the bowls requires bringing a pitcher/bag to the dish. I know the time constraints of a jam really limit things, but since you mentioned you were thinking about continuing work on this (and it's just fun to think about) I thought I'd write up a few ideas.
As a jam game it's impressive how much you've put together here. There are some nice emergent moments in the simulation, like when bringing in a new cat you might happen to notice one of the others is feeling lonely, so after letting out your new visitor you stop to pet the lonely cat for a bit before returning to the task at hand (i.e. taking the crate to the storage area). It's cute and it feels good. There's also just something about the departure routine that's just adorable and makes me smile every time, something in the way the cat just climbs right into the crate after you set it down.
Well done!
Thanks for taking the time to leave such detailed feedback! You've given me a lot of ideas about where I could take this game that I hadn't thought of before.
Pretty adorable, love the artwork.
Thank you!
This is really nice. Interactions are a bit clunky and I hit several game breaking bugs (cat stuck at the inn forever set to leave in a negative number of days, time to leave for a cat which already left the day before...) but I think what you managed in the time you had is pretty impressive!
The music got pretty repetitive, pretty quick though.
Thanks for letting me know! I'll see if I can fix those bugs. Unfortunately, I ran out of time to put as much work into the music as I wanted to.
Graphics are the best, cool color palette.
Controls feels a bit inconvenient because of mouse/keyboard mixing in an obvious way
Thank you for your feedback! Yeah, the controls didn't turn out quite how I hoped...
I love this concept - the art is cute, title is clever, really like the door open/close and the feel of the game. I like the other mechanic ideas you suggested, I think it would help bring more depth to the gameplay itself. Overall very nice job!
Thanks for playing!
lovely cat!
Thank you!
