This is a great implementation of this kind of mechanic. Well done.

Wow, really cool game with a very interesting mechanic. I was amazed when I died and I kept all the traits. I thought that You only get one trait at a time, but the way you did it was really great. Two things, the audio I didn't like hearing it only from one side of my headphone depending on what direction I'm looking at. The second is the cursor not updating unless you move it. I think you did it for optimization but it felt a little clunky at times. But the game was very good and fun otherwise!

Iteresting take on the theme, really cool that you gain stuff from the enemy that killed you. This is a good overall package, really enjoyed it!

That death sound... It reminds me of something but I can't figure it out.

Good game with cool concept, also the dino is very cute. Wanna check out mine?

Played and rated. Great little game.

The balance on the trade off for dying and receiving a new power is well done! I didn't mind as much dying with the new power, especially when we have the spike shield, that helps a lot :)

The concept is great for the theme.

Would appreciate if you check out and rate our game as well: https://hadilepanda.itch.io/rise-of-necromancy

Love the evolve mechanic, very fun game.

Very simple fun and simple game. I loved the background ambience and the sound effects. It is very relaxing

I love this! Watching the dinosaur evolving is really cool. You should definitely add more creatures and more variations. The control feels great and the creatures' sprites are very well made. I like how the enemies disintegrate into particles when died. Nice job!

I really enjoyed this! I think a couple times when I was at the ending platforming bit my jump didn't register (like I hit space and nothing happened), but there's a very high chance I just suck at platformers and I was already falling lol. Just curious though, did you check if space was pressed in update or fixed update? Because if its update I'm just trash. I felt like the shooting parts were really fun but slightly over powered. All things considered it was a lot of fun especially considering the fact that this was your first game!

Developer(+1)

It probably isn't you being trash. I had to do some last day changes because Unity's new input system didn't work at all in the WebGL build. I did notice that the controls and the way the player moved didn't quite seem the same after that. And the ending was messed up. But it was too late to do anything about it. I suppose I could go in and fix it because we are allowed bug fixes. But I would rather just start again and take my time making something that is better in every way, rather than patching up my rushed game. I am proud of it though, thanks for being so understanding.

Awesome game! I love the idea of taking on the evolutions of whatever killed you. Well done!

Great take on the theme. Went out of my way to die to everything at least once just to see how it changed.

Fun:
Due to how the evolve mechanic works, you re encouraged to suicide against enemies you haven't seen before. Since you can carry multiple enemy abilities, there is no trade-off to dying aside from restarting the entire game level.  A checkpoint system is absolutely required if suicide is encouraged. Without it the game felt tedious.

Aesthetics:
Seems new to pixel art. The ground tiles were passable, but everything else felt like beginner work.

My suggestion would be to follow a color palette for everything. Afterwards stick to an outline style, and clean up jaggies.

Music:
No music. Ambient background noise instead.

Sound:

The ambient background sound was nice, but the other sounds were clearly made in sfxr. These sounds should be avoided unless the game theme is 1970 arcade game feel. I suggest finding one of the many available free sound packs online for future projects.

Mechanics:
The movement felt sluggish. A slight movement speed increase might be beneficial.

Jumping and gravity felt good. Could use some polish but otherwise good.

The spike effect and boots were confusing.  I thought spikes would kill on hit, and boots would let me fly. A tooltip explaining the new ability would be nice.

The aiming and shooting ability was well done. I expected to only be able to shoot horizontally.  Once you get this ability, the other abilities feel completely useless, as I can kill all other enemies at range. It felt like a lot of time was spent implementing this.  Perhaps scrap more time intensive mechanics next time and focus on what you already have.

Story:
None as far as I am aware.

Theme:

This idea was unique. I can see a lot of potential here. Needs better implementation, but otherwise top marks.

The evolve mechanic is the clear winner of this game.

Marketing:
This usually isn't included, but it is absolutely essential as a game dev. Getting people to play your game is not easy, and I wanted to praise you on your ability to market this. Rating other games, posting your link on the discord, and most importantly implementing webgl are great for getting your game known.

Anyone can make a game, but getting someone to play it is an altogether different challenge.  Great job.

Wow! The game gave me nostalgic feelings. It was really fun and I developed new ambition every time I died. Very big compliment.
Small suggestion for improvement: next time please turn down the sound effect a bit, I just blew my headphones off my ears xD

Really enjoyed your game. I like the evolution mechanics. I also like the death animations you had for the enemies. Great work!

Pretty fun game! I liked the idea of getting stronger by "learning" from your deaths.

Nice sprites for the different creatures. Nice background music.

The sound effects were a bit too loud though. Could use some tuning there or adding some volume control sliders.

Good job!

I love that, Nice mix of platformer and  shooter. It would be nice if you could have the players controls locked the second they enter the final beam. Just an idea. Love the game

Great game! Great concept! As previously mentioned, the lack of checkpoints was a bit frustrating but other that that good job!

Submitted(+1)

the idea here is quite impressive. Personally I hate platformer and wouldn't endure play any games till the end, but with these OP power it made the game easier and allowed me to cheat deaths by a lot so I could play it till the end. The idea of stealing powers is great and all but think in the long run I think it's a wise choice to limited the number of powers the player can have and allow the customizations at the start of each round. There is another thing, since the level is quite long at least in my perspective, the checkpoints would be much appreciated. Though I'm not a fan of platformer games I do have my fair share of sidescrolling action games.

Fantastic! It's really cool gaining the ability of stuff that kills you. Really great concept!

Submitted(+1)

Awesome concept, I got past getting the shooting ability, but the lack of checkpoints made it frustrating, fast. The graphics are great, excellent work, especially for your first time using the tools, you claimed to have learned a lot, and that clearly shows. Nice work!
