You respect the theme as well , and the gameplay is simple but very cool. Nice work !

Developer

Thank you, the story was one I wanted to tell.

I tried to keep the gameplay mechanics to something I felt I could do in the timeframe, including time to do the artwork and sound, and get it uploaded (first time I've uploaded and used itch.io).

Great story, very fitting with the theme. Gameplay could have some difficulty scaling over time.

Just so you know, using ESC for pause menu tends to be a bad idea for web games because ESC cancels fullscreen. But I did like that you add F to toggle fullscreen. I did the same thing in my game and I'm surprised more people don't do the same 🙃

Developer

Thanks for playing.

The feedback on ESC to pause makes sense, it's the first time I've made a web build and didn't take the default full screen exit function into account.

After the end of the jam I will look at updating it, maybe use TAB or "P"

Cool tribute! Does the story have personal significance?

Strange that the sound is off to start, I didn't notice until I saw a comment that there was a sound option.

Developer (1 edit) (+1)

The only significance to me is that I was told the story.  But it was told to me by a veteran of World War 2 and was the sort of story that stood out.  Usually, the war stories I've heard have been about lost friends and families, or loved ones that never came home, or the bigger more strategic stories.  This one didn't fit any of that, to me it was more about respect, respect for the sacrifices made during war.

Thanks for having a go, will look at yours, might be tomorrow now though, I've played over 40 games today.  Been fun though.

Edit - Sleepy Typos

I appreciate it! And thanks for passing along the story :)

Sound off by default? How come? :P Fun game, definitely fits the theme. Maybe more of an indicator of player health but otherwise nice job!

Developer(+2)

Thanks for the feedback.

Unlike your name, my audio wasn't spicy enough ... in all honesty, I've never been in a jam before so when I saw guidance saying have it off by default, that's what I did.  Also, I often feel like audio is the most difficult bit for me.  Never been much of a musical talent and using tools like LMMS is a bit of a learning curve - I can do simple tunes and tweak some of the default sounds, but ask me to make a full song with multiple layers and it would probably take me months to do.

Submitted(+1)

oh I didn't realize turning audio off was part of guidance, how rude! lol  And you don't need to be a musical talent to have great audio, I think what you have in there is aesthetically appropriate and works well. You can sink a ton of time into music for sure, but the important thing is does it support the project, does it match the aesthetic, that kind of thing. Anyway cheers, good game :)

Submitted(+1)

Perfectly fits the theme. Congrats for making all your assets yourself! Also, love the fact that you have a team defending the zone

Developer

Thank you.  Glad you liked it.

Very cool story. Looks good too. I did have one of the ally soldiers glitch out looking left and right.

Developer

That's down to rounding errors in the built in navigation system in Godot, the only fix I found I found for that seemed to break the navigation after the first movement, so I left it with the bug, they sometimes spasm like mad, but they should catch up on the next cycle.

Thanks for playing, will have a look at yours as well.

Developer

Just played your game, nice little resource management game.

I managed to beat it, I am the "lemonade king" in your game ...

I also liked how the fact you get knocked out for not making money adds a bit of pressure.  I found myself just watching my stand rather than seeing how the others were doing.

Submitted(+1)

Thanks for checking it out!

Submitted(+1)

Great game. I really enjoyed the story and everything worked perfectly. Good work!

Developer(+1)

Thank you, still thinking of the Lemon Wizard and NOT Jim.

Submitted(+1)

The Lemon Wizard is a national treasure! And there is a secret regarding him that is found in a chest when you kill 500 zombies, but because we didn't get the chance to balance the difficulty or the spawning speed I don't know if it's even possible to get that far. :o

Developer(+1)

It might be possible with enough patience and practice, you should probably make a challenge of it, someone might keep trying to get to that point.

Submitted (1 edit) (+1)

Great job, and very relevant to the theme. The friendly fire definitely made things more interesting, as it enabled me to let the enemies keep shooting each other from one side. Great job with Godot too!

Developer

Just had a look at your game and its quite a fun game, the default mouse settings were a bit too sensitive for me and the audio glitches every now and then, but it's a fun game.

Submitted(+1)

That is a great game idea, I liked the pixel art you used and also the fact of playing with a team :)

Great game!

Submitted(+1)

Nice game, I like the art and the gameplay. The story is good too, not every game has something to tell. You told about a farm in France, are you French? (I am) I played in the browser in fullscreen on a high dpi screen and I think that the UI deserve to take more space as it renders very very tiny on my screen. I didn't ear any sound or music, am I supposed  to or you didn't implement any sound effect? Audio would add a lot more fun to the game imho. Keep up the good work!

Developer

Thank you, Je suis Gallois (Welsh), been a while since I spoke French.

I was told the story by War Veterans when I was holidaying in France, we stayed in the same hotel as them and got talking over dinner.  Was more than  a few years ago now.

The sound was off by default but there is a button to turn it on on the main menu.

I didn't think about UI scaling when I was making the game, I'm still learning it all at the moment and haven't gotten so far to be able to code in the checks for screen sizes or resolution just yet.

Developer(+1)

Just played your game, it was quite fun, and I loved the pixel art sprites.

I really hope you enjoyed making it as much as we are enjoying playing it, merci beaucoup et bonne chance.

Submitted(+1)

Thanks man! Glad you enjoyed it!

love me some backstory for jam  games like this, and congrats on doing all the assets, animation , sounds etc.

the only thing was that the sound was off by default, besides that great submission.

Developer

Thanks, it's my first game jam and first web build game, when I looked up how to configure the game for a web build the instructions suggested that having sounds off by default was good practice.  You're not the first to suggest I probably should have had it enabled by default.

Regarding the story, it was told to me and my family by war veterans, and is a story I had never heard before, or since.  I think it's nice when little war stories like this get out and remind us that even at the worst of times there is still some faith in humanity.

Nice art & animations i managed to kill 7 enemies woo, nice game i like the farmer carrying off the wounded like they were a bag of potatoes.

Submitted(+1)

Very neat game! Managed to get 30 enemy kills in my best run. The hot pocket things kept coming in clutch.

I feel like there could have been a little bit more feedback to indicate that you got hit. Once I turned the sound on I realized there was a sound effect that played, but it was pretty quiet compared to all the other ones.

Great job overall though! Very well done!

Developer

Thank you for the feedback.

I haven't quite figured out how to use property animations to their fullest yet, among other more dazzling effects to give good visual queues on things like hits etc. but when I do, will probably update it.

One of my relatives played it all afternoon the other day and got to 77 kills.  They just kept playing to see how far they could get.

Submitted

Solid game! I needed a minute to realise i wasn't the farmer :D and for the second game i forgot to turn the sound on :D

If you have the time, can you play and rate my game too?

Developer

Thank you, and will do, got a growing list at the moment.

Going to be a fun few days.

Submitted(+1)

I really liked your game and was a unique story that tied into the theme quite well! As some other people have already noted the attention to detail with the pixel art visuals was incredible especially the farmer. I also had a lot of fun trying to keep my friendly NPCs alive longer as I seemed to survive better when they were able to help me.

Congratulations on your first published game jam submission!

Submitted(+1)

Nice game, congrats on completing the game jam and your first game, that's awesome! it plays well, looks nice and I really like how the story ties to a real story.

Submitted(+1)

Amazing attention to detail, especially when your allies die, love the story too especially being based in reality, great submission

Submitted(+1)

It is a nice concept. great attention to detail. great mechanics. overall fast paced gameplay and full of tension.

Developer

Thank you.

Submitted (1 edit) (+1)

Nice work! I really liked your setting and characters, I think you did an excellent job of executing on the theme.

One minor piece of feedback I have is: For me the sound defaulted to off and so the first couple times I played I thought there was no sound in the game. I was about to post about how I liked the game but wished there was sound but then I located the button to turn on the sound. You did a nice job with the music and sound effects so I would default that to "On" if you can!
Great work!

Developer

Thank you for the feedback.

Sound is off by default. When I was looking up how to submit a web version, I read somewhere that it was good practice to disable sound by default and add a button to switch on and off.

Added a note to the description to explain that sound is off and how to enable it.

Submitted

I see! I can understand the reasoning behind starting with sound off as a general rule as it might startle people when the page loads. I didn't think of that.

Developer(+1)

I'm still learning this whole process, it's the first game I've published and only the second I've done to any kind of completion.

The fact that people are actually playing it, giving feedback and seeming to enjoy it is a huge confidence boost. So thank you.

Happy to play!
