I thought the explosion effects looked good. Clearing both enemies and their projectiles was an  interesting mechanic,  even challenging - nice job on the game!

Pretty interesting take on the theme! Feels like missile command mixed with space invaders. Would love to see even more enemy types & perhaps powerups if you're going to develop it further, well done ✨!

Thank you for playing! We have quite a few ideas we plan on implementing after the Jam. We just ran out of time. We will also be replacing the free music we used with our own as well as create backgrounds. This is our first game, so we could not make everything from scratch in time for the Jam or reach all our goals, but we will in the future!

As a fellow family member comprised game dev team, I was excited to play your submission and it delivered a very fun experience!

I loved the retro vibes of the game from the story to the visuals and the simple yet repeatably fun mechanics. I felt the reload time of the two mortars was really well dialed in. I imagine you play tested quite a bit to find that balance between mortars being fired too quickly and reducing the challenge to being too slow. I enjoyed the music and sound effects as well they really tied the game play together.

Fantastic submission!

Really enjoyed playing, gave me missile command vibes instantly - great! :D

Developer

We are so glad you liked it! Feel free to offer any feedback. We want to add more to it after the Jam and have some ideas.

Great job! I love this style! I died many times very quickly, but it was definitely a skill issue on my end lol

Developer(+1)

Thank you! My hubby could not stop playing your game tonight! He loved the artstyle and talked about it at dinner :)

Submitted

Wow, that makes me really happy, thank you for telling me! I'll let my partner know as well, he did the art so he'll be thrilled to hear that too.

Submitted(+1)

Very well done! I like the delayed reaction to the shells going off - as someone else has said could probably do with the speed of those being a little bit faster. Also might be worth considering a pattern movement for the enemies so you can predict where to fire at - good fun thanks!

Developer

Glad you liked it! There are actually multiple patterns of movement put in the game for the enemy. We do plan on polishing things up and ad more stages, but that will have to wait until after the game Jam

finally got time to play it. it's nice to shoot some pixels I like the space theme a lot

Developer

Thanks!

That was fun! For the first couple runs I didn't realize that you could intercept enemy bombs with your mortars. ( I did see that you put that in the instructions so it was just an oversight on my part) and once I figured that out I had a lot of fun. The main mortar mechanic is really satisfying and I was kind of going back on forth as far as firing both shells at once or alternating, seems like there are lots of ways you could go about strategizing with your two shells.
Great work!

Developer

Thank you! We still have so much more we wanted to add, but it will have to wait until after the Jam.

Love the sounds, brings back the old memories of playing shooting games. The bullet speed could be made faster to improve the experience a bit and an addition of cross hair could work really good as well. Awesome visuals, environment, ambience

Developer

Glad you liked it! Thank you for the feedback. I will make sure the rest of the team knows of your feedback. I find it valuable.

Developer(+1)

I thought about the crosshair about 5 minutes after the deadline ended but definitely was something we'd planned and hadn't gotten around to.

The bullet speed could possibly be adjusted some, it was made to feel 'good enough' at the start of the game but the alien bombs do start to drop faster and get to the point where you have to premptively 'Flak' the area to stop incoming fire.  Of course that can cause you to blow yourself up if you're not careful.

Took a moment for me to get used to the mortar shooting style, but once I got the hang of it I enjoyed it! I like the art assets for the facilities, very nice work!

Developer(+1)

Thank you! We could not get everything we want in and we plan on continuing to add features after the Jam to achieve the game we wanted.

It was a great learning experience.

Good looking and sounding game. The difficulty definitely ramps up fast, I thought I was doing really well and then got blasted out of nowhere haha. Fun game though, nice work!

Developer

Oh no! It was actually me (Kri) who had Italocus slow down the escalation because I felt it was too fast, so I completely understand. I will keep an eye out for others' comments about that to see if it needs to be reduced even more after the Jam. Thanks so much for the input!

Submitted(+1)

Personally I think it's OK for jam games to be hard, I wasn't really critiquing, more just commenting :) We all only spend a brief amount of time with each other's jam games and I prefer to be challenged quickly than to keep going endlessly, especially in a jam game where there isn't going to be as many mechanics to build towards as there is in a bigger game.

Developer

My hubby is the same haha. Me, I like to draw it out a bit and them BOOM. Make 'em sweat haha. :)

Submitted(+1)

The art style is really nice! Everything just kind of fits together. I really like this one! Nice work!

Developer

Thank you! Zimmerman really does have a knack for pixel art, doesn't he?

Submitted(+1)

Great submission! Like the other comment it has the old school space invader vine. Music and art style fit together really well.

Developer

Thank you! We are full of old-school gamers here. Finding music we loved was a bit of a challenge. We do plan on creating our own one of these days, but just not enough time for our first attempt. So, figured we'd wait on that. We do plan on adding more to the game after the Jam :)

Submitted(+1)

I like the idea and the style of the game. Music and sound effects also fit very well. Good job there! It reminded me a bit of space invaders and gave me an instant, nostalgic throw-back.

Only thing that annoyed me was the random shooting of the enemies and I cannot really do anything to defend myself (or I didn't realize that I can do that).

Over all good job!

Developer(+1)

We need to tweak some things, that is true! Time was a factor, which was probably something everyone dealt with for the Jam.

Still, I am really proud of what we accomplished and when I look at other game submissions, like yours, I am amazed at all the creative ideas out there and those that just got it done!

Developer(+2)

You can destroy the enemy projectiles with you projectile's explosion, (weird explanation I know) I've come to realize we never tell the player this- Sorry!

This is actually a very important thing to think about as a game developer, so thank you very much for this feedback!

Developer(+2)

Psst, I did sneak that in but maybe it wasn't clear enough.  In the bottom right corner of the intro screen:
Left and Right mouse buttons will each shoot a mortor that explodes when it reaches the point you clicked upon. Intercept enemy ships and bombs.
