This was well set up and the ambience is well done with the balance between searching for the exit while also needing to keep your torch topped up. I did get into a few levels where I kept getting boxed in, but I think knowing the level layouts with more practice would help. Great entry.

For the comment before mine: I would assume they are talking about the turn by turn single square movement (no idea what the official name for that type of movement is), which I actually think is vital for how you've set up the monster movement and is key to the game. It reminds me of the movement from Cadence of Hyrule (Crypt of the NecroDancer) where each enemy type gets a movement each time you do.

Developer

Thanks for playing, glad you liked the ambience. I am looking into improving the levels so that you  don't get boxed in too easily.

The grid based movement is indeed vital to the behaviour of the monsters :) and it is indeed based on Crypt of the NecroDancer.

the controls did not feel good

Developer

Hey there, thank you for the feedback :) is there any suggestion you have to improve the controls? Maybe I can implement it after the game jam ended.

That was really cool and definitely felt like a GameBoy game for sure. Great job on this one!

Developer

Thanks! Glad you liked it :)

Loved it! I think this one could be ported to a Game Boy with ease!

Developer(+1)

Thanks! Maybe I should give it a try to get it running on a gameboy for real :D

Great lighting effects, and cool game over screens!

Developer

Thank you! Great to hear you loved the game over screens :)

Very well polished game. I liked the atmosphere and the idea with the flashlight battery. well done. Great art.

Developer

Thanks for the feedback! So glad you loved the flashlight feature!

It would be awesome if once we try again we don't need to read all the text again. Besides that, this was a pretty spooky experience, nice lighting effects and atmosphere! Congrats!

Developer

Did you  make use of the codes that were whispered to you after completing the levels? :)

I do have the request to not show the battery text each time on my list for improvements, so at least that will be covered :)

Submitted

Well done! The only thing I would suggest is to reduce the amount of text and avoid over-explaining. After I picked up the battery the first time, I understood that it was meant to get more light.

Other than that, great job! It's impressive how you managed to create the light effect with only four colors!

Developer

Thanks for the feedback, I'll add a flag for text that has already been seen after the jam.

I ended up testing this in production, so while i can't rate it, i can vow for most of the gameboy mechanisms being largely true to the original, as i had written a gameboy emulator before. Turned out well didn't it?

Might actually be the best game this jam.

Developer

Thanks! Awesome to hear that you loved my game.

Are you ok with me framing your review? :P

Hahaha, no problems from me.

Great game! Imo the code is good if you want to continue playing after a session. While losing it is better to let the player replay the level he lost in. Leaving that aside, great execution! The light effects works wonders for the creepiness factor and do a lot to the gameplay. Well done!

Thanks for the review!

I wanted to have the experience of an old no battery cartridge game, so that's why I made it that way :) maybe I could add lives to balance it out for a next game jam.

The lighting and lightning effects were fantastic. I liked how you got flashes of the screen. I also appreciated the code input so I could try multiple times without having to replay bits I already made it through.

Developer

Good to hear that you loved it! Added the code input to give that good old "no battery cartridge" feeling :)

The lighting effects in this game are really cool. I especially likely how the lightning flashes give you a quick second to scan the level outside of just your flashlight range. One recommendation I can think of is it would save a lot of time if the Code Input screen saved the last code that you input previously so you don't need to input the same code twice. Awesome work!

Developer

Great to hear you loved the lightning effect!

I'll take that into account for the next game jams :) I based myself off of some old gameboy games that had no battery and kicked you to the main menu when you died. I think the fade setup could also be sped up to make it less annoying :D

The art and atmosphere come together to culminate in a dark, spooky atmosphere. Well done!

I also really like the system where you input a code to skip to a specific level. That's genius.

Glad you liked it!
