How does your game meet GBJam's theme?
What's more spooky than outrunning the reaper in a murder mansion? Possibly becoming the reaper and hunting his (im)mortal enemy, the cat, I guess. Spooky scene, spooky music, a fight for your life, and an alternate mode of hunting down the Reapers greatest nemesis, the animal with too many lives.

Two modes to play, either be the hunted or the hunter.

- As the hunted, see if you can outwit the Reaper and survive the day by finding a key in each area then making it to the exit! Use the cabinets to hide if he's too close or on your tail. (Check the screenshots for a map of possible key locations if you want. Keys aren't explicitly shown as they are slightly randomized but it may help to find your way. One key per area, with three potential drop points).
- As the hunter, cats have always been your nemesis (it's that whole nine-lives thing). Collect them all and you've won the day!

Check your times against other players in the leaderboards once you finish a mode!

Keyboard Controls:

Arrow keys to move player or toggle the mode selection
Enter/Return to Pause or start a mode
Escape while paused to return to the main menu
A or Space to interact with items (cabinets and switches)

It's cool that you managed to fit in 2 game modes! I like the hunted mode the most. It is genuinely pretty spooky and has great atmosphere. Great use of palette. I really like how the music adjusts to what is happening (with pitch bends, for example). Also the cats are so cute! The only critisms I have is that the pixel sizes seemed to look a bit inconsistent in some places, and the music contains a lot of sounds the gameboy could not produce, but those aside it still has great gameboy soul in my opinion.

Developer

Anywhere in particular the pixel sizing looked off? I'll definitely want to check that out and fix it.

And thank you for checking out my game!

The ambience was really spooky. The environmental changes were a nice touch, made me second guess what's lurking in the dark. Excellent game, congrats!

this game was crazy!! rly good stuff. the music is great and being limited in what you can see just made this so much scarier lol. echoing nekorai studios, i also don't like being chased so i also preferred the hunter mode. :') ignoring the bias though, i think just having indication of where to go helped a lot.

Thanks for the feedback! I'm working on a big update for after the jam to overhaul the Hunted mode. I'll be including an in-game map and a few other additions.

A solid entry, I had more fun being the reaper! A very spooky game, and the music was great!

The Hunted game mode was very creepy. I liked it. The disappearing teddy bears and guys peeping in the windows really did it. The hunter was on me before I knew it. The Hunter mode had a much lower stakes kind of feel, very casual, and I was expecting to hunt player characters. Hunting cats was a bit disappointing. Great graphics, way to create a spooky atmosphere!

Loved the two game mode, I don't like being chase in game but you get this feeling of pressure to hide and find a way to get out. I prefer the hunter mode, so it's a good idea to do both. Great entry!

Developer

Thanks for the feedback! Hunter definitely seems to be the most popular mode, so I'm glad I had time to add that in. I have a few ideas to upgrade the Hunted mode afterwards to make it a bit more enticing, but I've gotten some great ideas for Hunter as well!

This is an interesting Hide & Seek type game. It is pretty impressive that you included two game modes.  I particularly enjoyed the music & SFX. The art is good, but a little repetitive for the environments. I also didn't like the cone of vision feature much. Overall, this is a good entry!

Developer

Thanks for your feedback! I'll be coming back to this after the jam to add in/tweak lots of items that players have mentioned.

It was quite spooky and I like the art style, the music felt a bit off for a gameboy game.
Unfortunately all I did was walk around a poorly lit house for five minutes and only saw the reaper once and escaped him with ease. I found doors, but no keys.
Unfortuntely, despite the interesting concept,  it wasn't actually very entertaining to play as the hunted.
Hunter was more entertaining, but not very challenging.

Yeah I'll be adding a map/compass mechanic after the jam. I had a little too much fun making a giant map.

I admit I'm a bit of a post-chiptune modernist ;)  - and thank you for your feedback!

A brilliantly clever application of a 8-bit Dead by Daylight! I loved it so much! I really liked the color palette choice, using black, white, and red. The limited vision was also very well executed. Congratulations!

Gave this a shot! Felt a little mixed about the Hunted, there was some lack of direction and a lot of wandering to find the keys. The atmosphere was really spooky though, and the choice of dedicating a color to red was neat. I enjoyed the Hunter a lot more, I liked having some direction on finding the cats and it's neat there's a unique theme for each character!

Developer

Yeah I think I made the map a bit too big. It was my first time working with a tilemap and I went a bit overboard. I'm thinking of adding a compass and map pickup after the jam to help with guidance since the key locations are semi-randomized.

Music seemed a bit out of place for a Gameboy game, but it was still nice! Enjoyed searching for cats as the reaper!

Love the tense of the game. Really nice gameplay, with great visuals. Well done!

Loved seeing a dead-by-daylight-like!! The map felt a little large for the amount of content, but I still had a blast. I bet no one can beat my 6 minute cat-nabbing time!

Developer(+1)

Just watched your playthrough! Thanks so much for checking it out. Not many have made it through the graveyard, as he starts homing in on you faster with each door opened. Glad you enjoyed it and I learn more every time I see someone play it!

Amazing game i loved how the music sped up if the reaper was getting

 close to you

That was alright! The mechanics are a bit janky, but competent. The art is a bit rough, but readable. The character design is charming. The soundtrack is quite cool! Although, it's a bit more techno than Game Boy.

All-in-all, good work! Congratulations on the submission!

I got lost and was going to ask where is the key, and found the map in this page haha

Well crafted all around. The place is labyrinthine, but distinct enough that can know where you are with enough familiarity.
In hunted mode, it seemed like the reaper was a lot less aggressive early on, so the ratcheting difficulty (assuming it wasn't random chance) adds to the tension well.
The controls are a little sluggish, but I can only assume that's precisely so you can't just run past the reaper easily. It's done well enough that it feels fitting for the game, and adds to the tension.

The cats are a good way to spook people in Hunted mode, too. That flash of movement of a cat running around as you round a corner is a nice touch.

Hunter mode's online leaderboard felt a bit un-GameBoy-y, but it's basically a speed challenge as it is anyway, so I know why it was done.

Developer

It definitely was not random chance. As soon as you enter a new area he respawns closer to you. There will always be variance due to randomized pathfinding, but you're more likely to encounter him as you progress. Thank you for the detailed notes. I was on the fence about the leaderboards since I don't have as much control over the styling, but I felt that they matched the competitive nature of speed running the mode.
