Really creative concept, first game I play where you are a word-thief! With some polish on the controls you could easily make a lot more content for this! Great job!
Interesting idea for the theme and well done! I really like it
Good idea and nice art, well done
Despite the glitches, I have to give top marks for this one. Great art, great concept, unique puzzles. Well done guys!
This game is absolutely ADORABLE! The writing is amazing and the theme and puzzles are so unique! I had some trouble stealing the words and it crashed on me but I had a blast!
This game was a on of fun. I played it all the way through. The game dialogue was well written, and the music really fit the atmosphere, Over all it was really fun, and way different then everything else I played so far.
Definitely a unique take on the theme! I also like how you titled the game, "I will take your word for it" lol
I really like the concept, the game is really fun to play, though it needs some polishing, as other people have already mentioned, you should make it easier to click on words and make the dialogue system a little better (it should not skip to the next dialogue, just should skip the animation and show the full dialogue).
I would also suggest to remove the "words I know" box when the player is not in a dialogue, it just gets in the way otherwise.
I was not able to go past the second gaurd, I could not figure out the word I need, I am thinking the dialogue should not have been "the gate is not open" and should have been something like "the gate is closed" and we could replace "closed" with "open"... or maybe I am just missing something
I would love to see a full version of this game, please make a post-jam version! (and please tell me when you do!)
Thank you so much for your feedback! We plan on working on this game further after the jam is completed. As well, if you want to get past the guard, the word you are looking for is "totally" :)
This is a funny concept! I wasn't able to complete it, but I loved what I saw. I got a crash despite what I thought I did right by following your instructions. I'd recommend making it easier to click on the words, as currently the hit boxes are too small. This game has lots of potential! Great work!
Thank you so much! How far were you able to get?
It seemed like I exhausted all of the dialogs from the mushrooms in both areas, and got past the first guard, but nothing seemed to work to get past the second one.
You are able to replace words by selecting one you have already gathered. Some NPC's may have dialogue options that cannot be stolen, rather has to be swapped out with something else. Hope that helps!
As someone said, it does crash when you jump and try to talk to the guard. I was trying to come back to the second guard (what word do I need for him?) and jumped while trying to get past guard number one.
It's a very fun mechanic, and I enjoyed it! However, the hit box for grabbing the words is a bit funky and left me clicking at it, hoping to grab the word. Maybe that's on me for playing on a small resolution.
Sorry to hear about the crash! I posted a quick-fix for the crash in the comments, if you couldn't progress further into the game. Also thank you for the feedback :)
NOTES
Some words can be swapped out with the words you have already found by selecting a word, then clicking on a chosen word in their dialogue.
GAME BREAKING BUGS:
If you enter into forest with the three mushrooms, leave, and then go back to the forest, it will remove the dialogue from the blue mushroom and prevent you from progressing further. Please talk to the blue mushroom before leaving to avoid this issue!
If you go into the second forest area after completing the first guard's dialogue, the first guard will "reset", and if talked to will crash the game. To fix this, please do not go into the second forest area again if you complete the first guard's dialogue!
Great concept! I had an aha moment while playing. It's a little buggy, but definitely has potential.
if pressing e skipped the dialogue animation rather than the rest of the line it would be better. I have no idea how you could make a full game out of this but this demo is fun and well-written. Sad I couldn't use buttsniffer even once :(
That was a lot of fun. It took me a bit to realize I could replace words, but you had a really original idea. I did crash once while talking to the guard after I already got his word though. I'm really impressed with what you made.
Unique concept and charming execution! Definitely feels like it could be a great indie RPG in the future. Until it unexpectedly crashed when I was talking to the guard, I was having a great time :)
I'm sorry to hear that! I'll add that to the notes of the game. We're you able to pass by the guard?
I passed by the first one, then reached the second one fine. Went off to explore to find a solution, came back, talked to the first guard again then crashed. I was jumped at the same time as talking which may have contributed? I tried to replicate it but no success so I'm not sure exactly what it was.
I found the cause of the problem, and put a remedy for it in the comments if you weren't able to progress further then that. Thank you for your help in finding the bug!
Such a cool concept! This game definitely had a lot of potential to grow into something much larger, and can definitely see this idea expanded into a full adventure / rpg kinda game. The writing is also really funny! (props for using the word aggrandized)
As other people have pointed out, I think some good quality of life improvements would be making the difference between taking and replacing a word more obvious, preventing the player from moving if there is more dialog (it took me a while to realize characters had more to say), and making the "clickable" area for a word a little bigger (maybe even make it drag / drop instead of click?). Other than that, this is a really solid foundation, especially for a first jam! Well done
Good job on you guys first game jam!
Loved the Idea!
I love the idea, but the controls were a bit wonky for me, and it wasn't obvious when I could swap words and when I could steal them.
I love the dialogue and the sense of humor though!
These graphics are super charming, and the music fits really well despite there being only one track. This take on the theme was really, really interesting and unique, I think my English teacher would appreciate it haha. The animations (especially the dancing) were extremely lovable, and the dialogue is funny and well written. For a first jam game, your team has done an amazing job in the 48 hours given.
Some suggestions I would make is to freeze the player during important sections of dialogue so you don't accidentally skip it. It also took me a bit to figure out what the controls were, if there was a way to tell the player the controls without directly telling them (like having them written on the ground or so) then it would be perfect.
Probably one of the most graphically charming games I've played, great job again!
superb idea, it's fun to play but i don't understand what i need to do after replacing frog with cat.
thank you for checking it out! if you were able to get the cat, it provides the last word you need to defeat the rat inside the castle.
