How does your game fit the theme?
In line with the jam’s theme, “Built To Scale,” I aimed to create the tiniest survival game possible. I chose the world of microorganisms as my inspiration, and fittingly, the main enemy in this game is a cellular automaton that relentlessly chases you around the level. Here is a quick description of What is a Cellular Automaton is: A cellular automaton is a simple model used to simulate complex systems. Imagine a grid made up of cells, where each cell can be in one of several states (like on or off). The state of each cell changes over time according to a set of rules. In the case of my game the rules of each cell are determined by the position of the player. This creates an illusion of the automaton intelligently changing the player around.

Very cool game, definitely had me hooked for a little while! Is there a high score? I got level 111. Also, I had a few notes:

  • After getting the ability that lets you generate little red walls, it becomes very easy to stay in one place and not be damaged.
  • When increasing max HP, the bar extends past the edge of the screen which makes it very hard to tell how much HP you have. To fix this, you could keep the HP bar at a constant size, and instead have the game internally track max HP, and change the amount it scales the bar to represent this. For instance, if the damage = 1, and the player's HP is 10, shorten the bar by 1/10. When max HP goes up to 15, shorten the bar by 1/15 when taking 1 damage. You could also have a number representing max HP, though this may not be as aesthetically pleasing.
  • Once the player has all the weapon upgrades, continuing level by level becomes a bit slow and rote. There becomes a point where you have so much HP and the levels take so long that the player is encouraged to just run right through the black blob, which removes most of the strategy and pressure which can make the game fun, and turns it more into an idle game. Not sure if this was the intention. I think in this case you could add some sort of boss, or limit max HP, to prevent the game from being too easy.

Overall, I enjoyed this game, the loop was fun and the graphics were nice. Great job!

This is an image of my max HP being so high that I would just run through the black blob to make the level increase faster:

This is an image of the red wall strategy I described above:

Dude! Wow! I was dead sure I hardcoded a limit of 100 levels. Not that I ever expected people to get that far anyway. I’m glad you proved me wrong on both accounts. Thanks for stress-testing the game! It’s incredible how far you’ve come. If there was a leaderboard I think you’d be at the very top of it.

It did not occur to me that a health bar can grow that long. Silly mistake, but I’m sure I’ll be able to patch it out with no problem. Thanks for the advice I’m sure there are plenty of exploits in the game. I don't think I’ve playtested the game past level 10 before submission to be honest. I’ve saved your images Somehow they bring so much joy =) Thanks for such detailed feedback. I’m glad you loved the game

Cool! Yeah, I love pushing games to the limits, I'm always hoping there will be an easter egg :D Glad my playtesting was helpful!

Adding "building" ability was a very nice difficulty increase for multitasking, even though it somewhat broke the pathfinding.

very nice game, i would have liked some little break because after level 20 it becomes ver yhard to keep going non stop, but other than that it felt great to play :)

This game is amazing! Good idea and incredibly polished, the art style is insane, nice job!

This was a lot of fun! Simple and well made! The concept is great and the challenge was just right for me!

The intro with the finger being the cursor is astounding!
Satisfactory and well polished game! I felt like was kinda impossible to get a rewards on late game when the rewards is placed almost centered at the screen, but maybe I'm bad ^^'

Simple yet awesome, nice intro

Really nice! The upgrades are all simple enough to be understandable while also having enough nuance to be useful!

Well polished game. Love the way the black glob would move and split and chase you. Wish the player moved a tad faster. Overall well done!

This is a super fun gameplay loop! Love the goop enemy + different upgrades, had me playing for a while. I like the concept of being on a finger, but I don't think it was very well integrated into the gameplay; feels like you could switch out the background and not be able to tell the game has anything to do with scale. The intro animation was super cool, though! Great game overall!

Damn such a good game with great polish. Absolutly amazing and addictive gameplay. Great work for only a one man project!

Wonderfully executed! I especially loved the blob—it was such a cool touch. Truly amazing work for a solo dev!

Such a good idea, it feels suuuuper hard but I like it, I'm impressed with the number of power ups you were able ton integrate (we also made a vampire survivors like and god knows we wouldn't put as much), even more impressive for a one person team, congrats !

one of the coolest games I've played from this jam, really nice job with the intro cutscene, and the difficulty curve felt very fair when trying to figure things out! Well Done!!!!

Submitted

Great fun! It looks like you took some queues from Vampire Survivor, which is a totally fine inspiration to have as I've spent many hours there as well ;). Works great, looks great, plays great. What else is there to say? :D
