A great take on the theme, but to top it off with such dripping atmosphere is what sets it apart for me. Really engaging style, great music and plenty of content - I don't quite know how you managed it.

Anything I had to add it looks like people have already said, such as speed, but those are small niggles if anything. Hopefully you continue with this!

Cool game! Great use of assets to make something atmospheric. I think it could use a little more strategy to it, like odd numbers being better for archers or something like that.

Nice mechanics .. love it.
And the transition between levels ... just awsome!

You really must develop this game further.

Great game! Awesome environment and you're the best game of the dnd genre I was expecting. I would love an improvement to AI to make their attacks more coordinated or some mechanic that forces players to use more of their pieces at a time. Maybe you can't use more than 2 dice on a single character?

Developer

Yeah, definitely weighing options as far as limiting dice per unit! Thanks for the suggestion and thanks for playing it!

A great game! I liked the enemies and the lighting! This could easily be turned into a full game!

A nice spin on tactical rpg mechanics. It's a bit dark but I guess thats the point huh.
A complaint is that its a bit slow, you have to wait for the enemies, but also having to decide what to do with the dice kinda just makes it take longer to do your turn without adding much to the strategy of it. It's well put together though and quite functional, which is more than can be said about a lot of jam games. Nice job.

Thanks for the comment! I've actually already brought the tiles down for 15x15 to 11x11 which I think already helps a lot with the speed. Also brightened up the lighting a bit. The darkness was a late change for the jam and I think I initially went a little overboard.

Also working on ways to make the strategy of it all more in-depth.

Thanks for giving it a try!

Amazing game. I like how we can use strategy even having a random dice based mechanic

Good mechanics and I felt it pretty challenging. Good work!

This entry has the potential of being a fully fletched game. If you added more mechanics, for instance a flanking bonus so you are incentivised to move multiple characters up to attack, this game could be so much fun! The possibilities are endless.

Developer

Thanks for the comment! Flanking bonuses are a good idea and I am definitely working on ways to incentivize getting more units involved.

Good job! Mechanics are solid and can be asily expanded upon if you wish. At first I didn't realise that archer has less hp then swordsman (at least it feels like it), so melee units felt underpowered.
One thing I am a bit conflicted on is the ability to attack multiple times with the same unit. As it stands even approaching single enemy can result in a death of a soldier, which feels wrong.

Developer

Thanks for the feedback! Yeah, the archers have 8 health and the soldiers have 10. I actually have stats for attack and defense behind the scenes but didn't end up using them (everyone just have 5 which ends up even with the dice roll) cause I was thinking if an archer attacks with a 1 with a lower attack value it might just round down to zero. In hindsight could have made it work, but didn't really think it all the way through as I was jamming. It's already implemented though so a post-jam version will definitely have stats play into things more along with other unit types (a spearman for one as like a mid-range attack).

I really like your comment about attacking multiple times with the same unit. I think it may be a good update to the game to limit it to one die per unit per turn. This way more units will get involved and it will ultimately make enhancing the AI a little easier than it is currently. Also introduces possibility for powerups/skills where a unit can use an extra die.

And yeah, melee units are kind of trash currently, it is definitely currently an archer's game. I think even some small updates can really enhance all the strategies for the better.

Thanks again for the comment!

I got really invested in this one. Super fun! I also feel like there's room to expand if you want to add more. The mechanics are fun and I was on the edge of my seat the entire time when I was playing, hoping that the enemy would get a bad roll. All araound great game, good job on finishing!

One of my fav games of the jam, concept is well known but still cool, art and music match each other very good. A loading of the desk a bit long, but I think  this is such a idea

This is one of my favorite games of the Jam so far. I really like the concept. Taking the randomness of dice and making the player then make strategic decisions based on that is really good. It helps take a lot of the pain out of the random, all though there is still a little pain. I wish there was a little more to the strategy. Maybe some benefits from unit placements/adjacentency? That said, I played this game for quite a while and really enjoyed it. Good job.

Developer(+1)

Thanks for the kind words and feedback! Yeah, the game could definitely use some updates to add to the strategy and I already have some ideas and I think I am going to keep developing it. Was only so much I could get into 48 hours, but a few adjustments could go a long way to improve the game.

Submitted

Yeah, for sure. I was impressed by how much you did get done in 48 hours. Excited to see the future updates.

Love the dark style!

Really great presentation, gameplay is a little basic

This is really polished for a 1 person game! Core gameplay is a good use of dice, AI seems to be fairly intelligent, and the atmosphere is good

Submitted(+1)

I like the premise, it seems like it could be really fun if expanded upon. The game is waay too dark for it's own good though, as a strategy game it should be easily readable as a priority. It also takes a bit too long to get going, and defending feels like a situational mechanic that sorta works.

Those would be my criticisms, but I want to emphasize that the core idea could be great with a bit more work.

Developer(+1)

Thanks for playing and for the feedback!

Yeah, it is definitely a little dark. Was kind of a late change and I probably should have kept it a little brighter. I need to work on the lighting some more just in general.

One idea I had was to roll three dice for each unit, and maybe have some kind of turn order between them. Did not have time to implement but it may ultimately help to get things going faster and would also make programming the AI a lot easier (it is pretty dumb right now :)).
