Wow, this is quite the submission. A full blown overhead shooter with shop and everything. As some others have mentioned, the game seems a little to hard, I kept running out of arrows and the monsters did not seem to give enough cash to justify killing them. Maybe I am missing something, but tried playing twice and bought light and arrows and both times I ran out of arrows, first time I missed a bunch of my shots but second time, I only missed once and still run out. Maybe I should have just hid in a corner after killing first three enemies....

Thanks for submitting, it is a great submission just need the difficulty tweaked a little bit.

Developer (1 edit)

Thanks for feedback. I understand your point, the game is too hard but I wanted it so that the player has to think before spending coins. As you said, you ran out of arrows. In the game, you have to do all the upgrades after you have enough arrows for the night survival.

For a hint, first night, you will require 20-22 arrows, second night, 30-33 arrows are enough, for third night, you should have atleast 40 arrows, and the number keeps increasing.

As you mentioned that the monster don't give enough coins. Actually, this game is about survival more than escape, because if you will be able to survive untill 3rd or 4th night, you will have enough coins to buy key. I think that coins of the goblin enemy are little less as it gives only 20 coins but others are fine. because the black shadow enemy gives 0 coins and the fire ball gives 100 coins.  And that is enough to buy escape key for 500 coins.

Although I will tweak the difficulty after the jam so people can enjoy it more.

Thanks For Playing  :)

Oh damn its a good game. But in it's current state, too hard, for me at least. I played like 10 times and got only to the third night, those flying flames...

Some balancing is definitely needed. Maybe even just adding more lives will do the work. Would be cool to have some music (by the way I really loved the sound effects, almost every sound has some very satisfying click in it). I think the light source should not be fixed in one place, because it works better when you run in one direction, but it is much worse when you run in other direction. Also it would be cool to have some more things to do at the day time. Actually there are probably a lot of things you can add to fill it with content. I don't mean add to make a good game, but I mostly mean like potential is pretty big. Some close combat would be cool too, maybe some traps (setting it at the daytime maybe? or maybe just dropping on the floor while running from enemies). Maybe some shield system, can be especially useful with those flying flames. And maybe not only a labyrinth, some open spaces.

Oh well yeah I know it's easy to fantasize without actually implementing anything, haha, sorry.

Anyway it was fun, I think I replayed this game more than any other from the jam.

Thanks for your suggestions. I understand the point and I will surely make it a little easier.

I added sounds on the day of submission and couldn't find a proper background music for game. I am glad that you liked it. All the sounds were recorded by me and my brother. This was my first game in which I used sound effects.

At first I made the light source pointing in the direction in which the player is moving but that didn't seemed good to me.  I understand your problem and I will fix this after the jam. Although you will be able to see a lot better after upgrading the light.

I actually planned to have a close range combat system but I didn't had enough time to implement that. Although other ideas of yours are pretty cool. I will try to add a sword, shield and traps. You can check it out after some time of the jam.

Thanks  Foe Playing :)

yeah I would be happy to check the post-jam version out

Had some random idea, to turn the main character into some kind of sorcerer, so the flying bow is actually magic flying bow. On the other hand if it's a sorcerer why need a bow at all.

Developer

I thought of another type of bow like an fire bow instead of making the player into sorcerer. Thanks for suggestion.

The game is nice, good job!

As said in previous comments, the day/night phase concept is really good. I would have liked to be able to defend myself in close combat (in cases where we find ourselves facing a wall)

Developer(+1)

I understand your point. Actually I wanted the bow for long range fight and for close combat I wanted to give the player a sword in his hand and I even had the player sprite sheet for sword attacks but due to lack of time, I couldn't complete it because I joined the jam after 3 days it started and couldn't give enough time to game due to some other important work.

Thanks For Playing :)

Totally understandable! (I had the same problem)

It's still very good job for the little time spent on it :)

This entry is really cool ! I liked the concept with the day/night cycle as an upgrade/fight cycle. I found it quite weird to have a bow with reduced visibility, but it becomes better as you buy light upgrades. The labyrinth was a cool setup, it would be super cool if it changed/ you got teleported every night randomly to force the player to not stay at the same place I think. The visuals for the characters are all super pretty too, it would be cool if the others visuals matched those of the characters (the walls and the bow).

Anyway, I really liked it and there is already a lot of content for a game made in a week, good job !

Thanks for your feedback. The walls i used were only to prototype for the basic game and i planned to change it later by good Pixel walls but due to lack of time, i had to manage with these walls.

Thanks for playing :)

Great job, I liked having to balance surviving the next night or saving up for keys. I didn't manage to escape but think I could have if heart refils were available in the shop, I mostly lost hearts when the enemies got inside the minimum range.

Developer (1 edit)

Actually heart refills are available in shop.

First heart starts from 300 coins. And you can easily buy it after surviving 2nd or 3rd night. And gain enough coins.

Thanks for the feedback :)

Nice game! I thought the shop in the day/escape at night setup was clever. I think I would have liked it better if you could see further at night OR had a melee attack for when the enemy was right on you (or maybe that exists and I haven’t found it)

Submitted(+1)

I played again and noticed that (some?) enemies only attack you once– so if you’re out of arrows, they just follow you and block your movement, instead of killing you outright

Developer (1 edit)

This is actually a glitch which occurred during change between current state of enemies and I didn't had time to solve it. Although it is very rare, I came across this bug only 4 times during the development of the game.

Sorry for the bug :(

Developer (2 edits)

No. Actually I didn't had time to implement melee attack. And if you upgrade the orb you will be able to see a lot better and clear. The orb glow was less so that player will have a reason to upgrade light orb and spend money.

Thanks for FEEDBACK

Good game and good use of the sun wildcard and lighting effects with day vs night.  I think the radius of the bow circling the player should be smaller.  Or work on getting the bow in the character's hands.  You should probably also let the player know or get a feeling for how long night is going to be or maybe I didn't notice where it showed that.  GJ

Developer(+1)

Thanks for the feedback. Actually I didn't had time to change the sprite and give the bow in player's hand. I thought to make a night time label, too but I thought It would be nice if player becomes curious and wait for the night to finish without knowing how much time is left.

Those fire enemies are hard. One spawned right on top of me when night started and I lost 2 of my three hearts before I killed it. Next one I came across finished me. Great game keep up the good work.

Developer

Thanks for  your feed back. This was my first game jam and also the first game in which I used sound effects. By the way, did you played it again? And if so, were you able to escape?
